@jimw350 I disagree. Cash sings it in a very no-nonsense way, not v emotional, just the way it is. I also think you shouldn't judge Johnny Cash based on a single performance at the beginning of his career. He greatly expanded his range later.
This appearance by Johnny Cash was on the "Country Style USA" TV show. It was a syndicated program produced in New York, and sponsored by the US Army. It was previously a syndicated radio show in the late 1940s that made the transition to television.
wow, 4 people didnt like this? the sad thing is that those 4 people will probably reproduce and pass on their defective worthless genes to their progeny and the cycle will repeat itself...
@lxsosna Your saying One Of The Greatest Guitar Pickers of ALL TIME 'Has No Swagger' - His 'Swagger' is in His Playing, Absolute Magic....RIP Luther Perkins, The Quiet Man.
@lxsosna First of all he WAS NOT the "back-up guitartist". He was the lead and after his passing, great guitarists, such as Bob Wootton, Carl Perkins, even Marty STuart copied his style!
@meynard1 Luther Perkins(the back-up guitarist that you mentioned) was the lead guitarist when Johnny cash and the Tennessee two and eventually the Tennessee three were in the height of their popularity. Luther was with Cash until he died, tragically, in a home fire.
look at hte eyes of the lead guitarist (Marshall??)..they are saying"oh my god..it's right?"...i love johnny and his band...i love them,'cuase they are so genuine and true.Thank you johnny, thank you guys
My personality on stage is quite much like Luthers. I'm frightened of performing too. It's quite hard to do it while weeping, but i always manage to do everything like supposed to do. God bless Luther. :)
among all the songs I love from Mr. Cash, no one touches me so much in the heart as this .... nor even more in my saddest dreams, could have come to write something like this.
This was the first "blues" song I learned how to play and sing. I was 14 years old. It would take another 10 years and a wife walking out the door before I learned what this song really ment.

Interesting info about the pickguard. I never heard of that but the theory makes sense. Great Cash song--one of his best. Luther was in rare form also
its the pic guard, when you use a pic sometimes it can hit the guitar and it protects the finish from scratches. they come in all shapes colors and designs, just about every guitar has one, most of them are white nowadays
that is his pick guard. a lot of guiatr players used to prefer the larger pick guards in the older days, there was a theory that it deepened the tone of the guitar by reducing vibration of the top. that train of thought is long gone now. if you truly want to see a HUGE pickguard. look up flatt and scruggs version of Jimmy brown the paper boy.
That guitar player was Luther Perkins, Johnny's long-time guitarist until he burned to death one night. He's buried with Cash, June Carter Cash, and the Carter Family in the same cemetery in Hendersonville, Tennessee. For a country guitarist, pretty good company.
I don't know how Luther Perkins was IRL, but in Walk The Line he was a guy with a deadpan face who rarely said a word, at all. Until they are in that hotel elevator, together with those cops, and he asks: "Say, officer, how did you get your shirt sostiff?"
