  • @ranger69me USC Trojans and Coach John McKay saved Bear Bryant's job and the UAT Crimson Turd football program in 1970. UAT learned that black people actually existed!

  • @ranger69me What USC has done lately? They are ranked #5 in the AP poll while being put on probation by the NCAA..

  • Fight ON!!!

  • We are all brothers and sisters. Black and white. Please for heaven sakes let go of the hatred or misunderstanding you have in your heart. It is no way to live, have love in your heart for your fellow man.

  • @subjoy1 I could give a rats ass.. When push comes to shove, My Trojans will and forever be better than your trailor park, country dixie, blood hound sniffing Vol country you call Elvis presley state.. do me a favor and paint this on your Rock... SC OWNS THE VOLS 4-ZIP BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

  • Fucking stupid how fans from both teams try to turn this into a geographical culture war. Hillbilly rednecks vs west coast dope head hippies? How about we just stick with stats and facts and leave all the regional rivalry crap outside. I've spent years in both areas of the country and both have a lot of cool things going for them.

  • @kylemas2005 You do know this game was played in 1970 and not 2011, right?

  • One thing USC and Bama fans have in common is we both hate the NZAA, we both received harsh penalties. Alabama had to vacate wins from past games in which ineligible players unknowingly participated after their own textbook gate came to light. USC had to vacate wins from the end of 2004 - including a National Championship - and all of 2005 when it was discovered that Reggie participated while ineligible. I hope either one of us bounces back and give payback to the NZAA.

  • Im not a nigger. Im a Blackman. You are a nigga. Black people dont even like niggas like you. That why you begging for thumbs up ass has none. Your mother dont claim you.

  • What About When Syracuse played Texas in the cotton bowl (correct if i'm wrong on that) when syracuse had ernie davis? This one is good,But The Ernie davis story is one of the best to me

  • u sissies never had facts straight. bear bryant wanted black players but wallace said no. bryant set up d game for us to get azz whippn to prove his point , we needed to integrate. 4get er body who said alabama was just hillbilly state. we always were champs. still is today. 2010 national championships. blah to all haters black and white for talking without known truth. Roll Tide!! 2012 why not? check last 3 years.

  • Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matt 7:21

  • The point so many are missing from the vid was that no matter how great Bear was, he was still an employee of the state of AL. He was restricted to what he could do based on the political structure that existed. He couldn't push prior to 65 because there just wasn't the political will to do what's right. Most Bama folks seemed not to just win, they wanted to win white. Well that crap was thrown out the window when other conferences were passing him by. He knew where the future was...

  • Man in this day/age, to see a coach smoking on the field is startling....

  • The University of Oklahoma integrated it's football program in 1956 when they signed Prentice Gautt. Sadly, he had to stay in a different motel from the other players, wasn't allowed to eat inside the restaurants like the other players, etc. The other players were fine with him, but the institutions of racism don't change that quickly.

  • @Crimson13Tide i guess you didnt see my last comment, yes Florida didnt when their first til 96, and LSU's in 2003 was their first since the fifties and same with auburn, (recent), and bama is 7-1 against texas, whoopie and all those other titles you mentioned before 96 was mostly just bama, and yes bama was the usc of the sec for a while, and u should be proud of that for your team bro, and you left three titles out of the pac 10 washington huskies 60,84,90,91, some were shared title...

  • @Southernjuggalo63 why dont you look at the the top 25 polls, from 2002 and back, and google it.... thats funny i can tell you are a recent college football fan, cuz LSU won the title in 03 the first time since the 50's and auburn, won it this year first time since the 50's, florida won their first in 96, and the year before that nebraska waxed their ass, and alabama first time since, the early ninties, and alabama ran that conference for a long time like USC of the pac 10, all recent

  • That game justified Alabama's decision to intergrate their football program. However, contrary to popular belief, the decision had been made prior to this game. The video said as much......Wilbur Jackson was already there.

  • ALL you SEC punks should thank USC, as much as u yall hate them, SEC conference good Since 2003, thats it

  • @billylomax85 LOL SEC HAS DOMINATED MORE THAN ANY OTHER CONFERENCE IN THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL

  • @billylomax85 National Titles won by the SEC since 1970 to 2010: 1973, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. That's 13 Titles since 1970 for the SEC. The Pac 10 has, from 1970 to 2010, won Titles in 1972 and 2004. Wow...2 Titles for the Pac-10 since 1970. Apparently you have no idea what you're talking about. Oh, the 2004 Title was vacated, so technically it's 1. The SEC has been good for a long time, not just since 2003. Brush up on your facts little buddy.

  • @Crimson13Tide

Uh... what? Since 1970 the Pac10 has national titles in 1972, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1991, 2003, 2004. Maybe YOU should brush up on YOUR facts?

  • @catspaw In 2003 LSU won the National Title. In 1991 Miami was selected National Champions by the AP. In 1990 Colorado was the AP National Champions and Georgia Tech was selected as champions by the UPI. 1978 Alabama was selected by the AP as the National Champions. In 1974 Oklahoma was selected Champions but were on probation and the Title was given to USC by default. However, in 1972, USC was National Champions, so my bad. All but the 1972 and 1974 years you listed are Pac 10 teams.

  • @Crimson13Tide Hey crimson13, come back over to "2010 bcs national championship game" and check out my dismantling of gaymoose and his 12 usc national championships theory!

  • @Crimson13Tide 1973 is a mistake since the ND Domers beat UAT 24-23 for the national title. USC beat UAT 24-14 at Legion Field during the 1978 season and was robbed of the AP Poll championship although the coaches poll was correct in that USC was ranked #1 and awarded the national title.

  • @greymoose1000 Alabama was selected Champions prior to the bowl game. In 1975 the rules changed and the Champion couldn't be selected until after the bowl games were played. Alabama won it under the rules that were in effect at the time. The AP was the poll that counted back then and Alabama was selected by the AP. In 1978 USC lost to unranked ASU 7-20 and went on to beat #5 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. HOWEVER...Alabama lost to #7 USC but went on to beat #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.

  • @Crimson13Tide UAT should return the AP trophy from 1978. I know we at SC would not accept a national title like that but the Crimson Turds love doing that. That is how they count 1941 where they actually ended the season ranked 20th. Yes, 20th, and yet somehow UAT followers count that year as one of their mythical national championships.

  • @greymoose1000 I heard from a friend in California, USC graduate, who worked with the team and coaches that Pete Carroll said USC was a dump and got out before all of the shit came down on him. It was reported by ESPN that he agreed with the decision that USC should return the 2004 Trophy and Bush's Heisman Trophy.

  • @Crimson13Tide What GAYMOOSE fails to let everyone know is that usc won the michigan game on a botched call by the referee, if not for that usc would have had two losses in 1978! Also, usc should return the national championship trophys for 1967 and 1974 because BOTH of those titles were won LEGITIMATLY by oklahoma!

  • @cfaulc Lol. How true that is. Greymoose1000 says "usc doesn't claim titles they didn't win"....but they do. 2003 is the one that makes me laugh everytime. In 2003 LSU was chosen by the BCS as the National Champions. From 1936 to 1997 the AP was the poll that officially chose the National Champion. From 1998 to Now, the BCS is the voting body that chooses the National Champion. Greymoose1000 knows this but refuses to accept it.

  • @Crimson13Tide Grey Moose trolls all Tide videos. This makes at least a dozen I've seen him commenting on. Must be really intimidated by Bama for them to always be on his mind. ROLL TIDE.

  • @Crimson13Tide USC = 11 national titles = FACT! UAT has four national titles = FACT/ you have been owned once again by the great and wise MOOSE of USC!

  • @greymoose1000 zzz...zzz...huh? oh...zzz....zzzzzz....

  • @Crimson13Tide USC 11 Titles to 4 for the Crimson Turds!

  • @greymoose1000 The NCAA says Alabama has 8 Titles and USC has 6. It was 7, but the 2004 Title was officially stripped from USC. Care to argue with the NCAA and AP?

  • @Crimson13Tide The MOOSE always enjoys reading your inept analysis of what is and what is not associated with college football. According to Wikipedia and NCAA national football collegiate titles, Princeton leads the way with 28. USC, OU Boomer Shitters, and the UAT Turds each have 17. Oh well, always amusing to read your inaccurate and inept posts on You Tube. The MOOSE will be off to the beach soon to enjoy the Pacific while you continue to pick up debris in Tuscaloser.

  • @greymoose1000 You just previously said Alabama only has 4 now you say they have 17. Which is it? Also, how was my post inept? I posted facts according to the NCAA and ESPN. Last season ESPN reported that Alabama and Notre Dame are tied with 8 Titles each. Those stats are the stats posted by ESPN and the NCAA, not made up ones. ESPN and the AP only count Titles won since 1936 (year AP was created.) NCAA also says Alabama has 8 "official" titles. You used wikipedia as a "reliable" source? Haha!

  • @greymoose1000; It's ashame that a person like yourself, who has such a high spirit for college football has to resort to making classless insults like "picking up debris in tuscalooser" I'm sure if Los Angeles was devastated by an earthquake and you had friends, neighbors, and family left homeless, injured, or killed, you wouldn't appreciate being insulted like that. If I were a USC fan, your obsession with Alabama, and your classless post would embarress me. Just saying...

  • @practicalpurpose Does anyone care what you think? Fight ON Trojans BABY!!! How is Tuscaloser today?

  • @greymoose1000 you're the on wit the little schoolgirl crush on Alabama, you tell me.

  • @practicalpurpose USC BABY! 42-21 - The greatest game of all-time!

  • @greymoose1000 Again, I'll take that as "I got owned and don't have anything else to say"

  • @practicalpurpose A wise move on your part!

  • @greymoose1000 No, Greymoose that was in reference your response. Throw a score up from 1970 when you don't have a comeback. I think your little school girl crush on Alabama is flattering. For somebody who likes to brag about going to the beach on the west coast (I assume to watch bodybuilding men workout) you spend alot of time talking about Alabama. They must be doing something right to attract your attention.

  • @practicalpurpose UAT CRIMSON TURDS! The most heavily penalized team ever by the NCAA. Probation for 17 years consecutively. Congratulation also on losing a football player from your team to the AUTURDS! That must have left a special feeling in your little tummy!

  • @billylomax85 .........The SEC has been good for a long time. It's the strongest conference in the history of college football...........in fact it's not even close.

  • @coolsouthernrain75 THE SEC plays cupcakes outside of the conference and therefore beefs up their win percentage during any given year. See UAT leading off the 2011 season by playing Kent State and refusing to play Boise State and/or TCU or UTAH on a home and home basis. This was reported and confirmed by ESPN. Also, LSWHO played McNeese State and UL-Monroe this previous year. By the way, UL-Monroe beat UAT at their homecoming game in 2007. UAT also played a first year Georgia State team.

  • @greymoose1000 ........The SEC has more OOC wins in the 21st century against teams that finished ranked than any other conference. Also......Alabama beat USC in Los Angeles in 1971 and in 1977.

  • @coolsouthernrain75 My coach John McKay saved Bryant's job and allowed UAT to continue to play college football since the NCAA was about to shut them down for not playing blacks.

  • @greymoose1000 .........That's not true and you lose all credibility by even attempting to to get that statement passed anyone. Note: Alabama leads USC all-time 5-2 in games between the two.

  • @coolsouthernrain75 Just remember. Coach McKay was a great man and saved Bear's job and UAT's ultimate reputation.

  • @billylomax85 Absolutely. John McKay saved Bear Bryant's job at UAT by agreeing to play and beat the shit out of the Crimson Turds at Legion Field in 1970. UAT also lost to USC in 1978 by a score of 24-14 at Legion Field in Birmingham and split the national championship with the Crimson Turds that year. USC won it on the field while UAT won their championship through the polls.

  • conridge holloway of tennessee was the first

  • USC and Alabama best college football Programs of all time!

  • alabama and the sec always got the bad rap for not integrating but teams up north were only playing 'just enough blacks too win and thats all.look at penn state back then and there's only one or two blacks on the field

  • Alabama lost in 1970 and the game was arranged by Bryant to show the South it needed black players and that is to his credit. But his team beat USC the next year in L.A. and they traded in 77 and 78. Alabama beat them again in the 1980s.

USC has had a great program but too much cheating and they unfortunately had the murderer O.J.

  • @Hume77

You forgot to mention there was/is a lot of cheating of going on at Bama. They're still on probation for it now.

  • @Bishop4695 but your forget according to nationals and conference champions there is only one other team that comes close and thtats notre dame

  • @Hume77 I guess the Tide is innocent of cheating?? hahahahahahahaha!!!! The 2000 Crimson Tide was the Worst Team Money Could Buy.

  • "Legendary" Coach Kush was an overrated brutal coach who had to resign a few years later because of the way he treated his players. USC had just come off of the win against Alabama and was totally flat otherwise they would have beaten the hell out of Arizona State.

And Alabama won the national championship on the more prestigious poll that year and won it outright on all polls with an undefeated team the next year. USC just had their last one taken away for cheating.

  • This game did help southern football have some black players, at least Bear Bryant said it did. But it was another decade before many blacks were on Alabama teams. &1 , there were about 3, 73, about 8, 78 and 79 maybe 12 to 15. all those were nationally ranked teams. 1966 Alabama had no blacks 11-0 with Stabler , beat the crap out of a huge Nebraska team that had blacks. Alabama weighed average 180lbs. Bringing blacks was a good thing politically! but thats all. I hate football,.its ruined.

  • pretty typical subject for CBS.

  • @ADCArcher Truth hurt?

  • now its all black

  • If you are white, why is this good? Whites have been virtually eliminated from SEC football. Is it just on talent? After all, this story shows an all white team played integrated teams well into the 1960s and won consistently.

  • @myoung222

If you want to resegregate college football in the SEC please suggest this to your friends and get the laws passed. We in the north will be glad to get those men instead and beat the shit out of your teams with them.

  • The point is, this was a fabricated story. The game happened, like the one the next year when Bama beat USC in L.A., but the rest of it was just made up. It's never good to pass a lie off as the truth, no matter how good the intent is.

  • Besides their shared desire to end racial segregation, coaches Bryant and McKay (good friends) had two more things in common:

Love for a stiff drink and a good cigar.

  • Comment removed

  • Good for the ole Bear. WDE, though.

  • i'm a big alabama fan.been one since 1970.but usc usually gets the best talent .i'm talking over the years they do.coach bryant in his book even said usc was one of the teams he always wanted to coach because of the talent they get .its true.just look at pete carroll's teams.

  • Your wise beyond your years. It pisses me off because most of these idiots ( USC and Bama fans) don't realize the history between these two storied programs and the deep friendship between Bear Bryant and Coach McKay. They would rather talk bullshit about conference pride because they don't know the facts. Bama has always stayed above that with their outer conference play and class. Rarely do I hear a Bama fan hide behind their conference when their specific team isn't doing well.

  • Beautiful/wonderful message!!!!!! Please post more!!!!!!!

  • Great video! Great game! Come talk about it with other sports fans, you can check my channel or go direct to ultimatesportsboards we have a lot of sports fans, no word censors, and limited mods, come have your say!

  • Coach Bryant tried to get clearance to bring Af.Americans to KY in the 1950's. During a dinner party he approached a politician about the subject. Coach Bryant used the program just a few miles up north in Columbus,Oh as an example as how the Af.American athlete could improve the program. The coat and tie told Bryant he might want to think about finding another job if those were his plans. No, A&M did not integrate after Bryant took over but his mind was working towards this plan for 20 years.

  • @tpggroup

Thanks for the information. It's not surprising,if you remember what he did for a frat bro after WWII. His friend, the son of Jewish immigrants to Tuscaloosa, was taken prisoner after the Bataan Death March.Bryant made him rich after he returned to AL half blind & half dead. That's the loyalty of a true gentleman. I respect Paul "Bear " Bryant above all other college football coaches for his personality AND character;even above Pete Carroll. Bear was/is in a class by himself.

  • Usc The Best Alabama Suck

  • @DLPhillips22 so thats why we have a harder schedule than yall and still have more national champions than yall do? face it USC is gone now thx to lame Puffin. Alabama is and always will be better than USC, Ohio st and any other team in those weakass conferences. RTR!

  • @Loganh12. How many Heisman Trophy Winners does Bama , Have.?

  • @SKGLs13 1 and im proud of em. how many national titles does ur team have? not more than 13 >:p

  • @SKGLs13: one, and believe me we're none too ate up inside about it. the heisman is a trophy for great players, not great teams. alot of players who touched a heisman never won a national championship.

  • If you had any sense of history you would know that Bear Bryant and Coach McKay were very close friends. I don't think Coach Bryant would appreciate your crass comments today considering all the trouble he went to to get USC on their schedule. The old players of these two teams have alot of respect for each other. When you post horseshit like that it just hurts Bama's prestige with alot of Tide fans across the country. Your a NATIONAL PROGRAM, start acting like it.

  • @DLPhillips22 Are you a special-needs person?

  • Alabama already had 2 Black players on their team at that time. Besides, that same team went out to L.A. the next year and kicked USC's ass.

  • @BAMAPERRY By 3 points. Not the same as 20 points.

  • @BAMAPERRY Alabama lost to USC that year and then had to split a NC with USC just another example Alabama claiming a national championship but not deserving it

  • @LOLz420k

Really? Who did USC lose to that year and what was their ranking?

  • @BAMAPERRY it was long before the BCS and you should know that but you dont split a NC with a team you lost to.... but as a bama fan i know you will find some way to justify that just like the east bias bias did

  • @LOLz420k USC lost to a Chump Arizona St. team. Alabama beat the number one team in the nation in their Bowl game. That's why Alabama won, and deserved the 1978 Title. They also played the toughest schedule in the nation that year.

  • @BAMAPERRY yep and got ass whooped by USC with Charles White going 32 carries for 199 yards. Brad Budde knocking the stuffin out of Rich Wingo, James Hunter taking Wayne Hamilton to the TURF!! And Charles White jumping over Murray Legg and Ricky Tucker. And Jeff Rutledge eating TURF from Eric Scoggins, Rich Dimler and Myron lapka..All All Americans that year..Along with Chris Foote, Anthony Munoz, and Keith Van Horne Anchoring a Huge Line who WHOOPED Alabama's fuckin ass!!! Bear admitted!

  • @PageHendrixRhodes yes thats' true but alabama beat that same team in '77 21-20 in los angelas.alabama and usc were 2-2 against each other in the 70's.actually the score was 21-3 before usc made a unsuccessful comeback.alabama is 5-2 vs usc all time.

  • @BAMAPERRY Arizona State was coached by Legendary coach Frank Kush, and had a FANTASTIC Defense that year... Only team to hold Charles White under 100 yards....BAMA sure as hell couldn't do it!!! All that really matters is USC beat the fuck outta Alabama that day. period. End of story...

  • @LOLz420k USC would have eaten Penn State's Ass alive that year!! They would have never stopped Charles White.

  • I sure Bear Bryant would punch you in the fucking face for bad mouthing USC considering him and Coach McKay were best friends that wouldn't appreciate your ignorance depreciating the history between those two fine programs during the seventies. Back then Bama was the only SEC team that had the foresight to see how much outer conference scheduling meant to the rest of the country. Bama fans back then didn't give two shits about conference pride. They just cared about their own boys.

  • @BAMAPERRY It was more about fan perception than the actual integration. Coach Bryant realized an age-old truth when it came to integration: In order to make it work, you had to hit the segregationists where they lived.

  • Unlike Mexicans, Blacks did not Boycott or vote not to play in Alabama they just went down there and kick the shit out of Alabama.

  • In the '71 game Alabama ran a wishbone offense which the Trojans didn't know how to defend. Strange that the '70 game wasn't televised. The only thing we see is the film.

  • @ebf1957 Also it has to be noted, that 1970 USC team was not a great team, nor was the 1971 Trojan team. I would have loved to see that Bammy team go up against the 1972 USC team, arguably one of the greatest teams in CFB history.

  • @1usctroj Some school from Palo Alto called Stanford ruled at the time the PAC-8 in the 70 and 71 seasons beating Ohio State and Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

  • How does a team go 11-0,and Notre Dame,MichSt played for a tie, then ND jumps Bama from 5th to 1st!I kno that Alabama was looked at as being a racial school but cmon Alabama should have had a 3 peat!!

  • imagine the SEC without african americans now...

  • @janitorsdisease Imagine any school without black players?

  • @starVol haha, maybe yale or something like that

  • What gets me is the following year an almost all White Bama team goes to LA and beats USC and no one ever talks about that.

  • Because it had nothing to do with the theme of the presentation. Why go backwards and try to suggest that the "almost all white" team was suggestive of a better system. Coach Bryant saw the need for change...bless him for it too.

  • I'm not in anyway trying to suggest that the 'Almost' all White Team was better, only stating a fact that an All White Bama team goes to LA and beats USC and no one mentions this.

  • ur racist

  • How is it racist? Just pointing it out. Dont believe it, just look at the score of the '71 game. Hell I'm married to Black woman.

  • clearly one game was significant and the other wasn't. That's why no one talks about the LA game - in history it wasn't important. One game was about football, and one game was about progress.

  • Congratulations to The Bama Tide on wining their 8th all time National crown. Only Bama and Notre Dame can boast as many as 8 AP crowns. After several really down years in the Big 10, the Big 10 did pretty well by going 4-3 and 2-0 in BCS Bowls. The SEC also did well going 6-4 by winning 2 BCS bowls, the biggest being the BCS title game. The SEC and Big Ten went 1-1 with head to head competition. Pac 10 had a down year at 2 -5. ACC did not do as well. Big 12 4-4. Anyway 2009 is in the books.

  • I would not bragg about winning the BS championship! It doesn't count until there's a valid playoff system in place, until then, it's BOGUS! No matter who wins it!

  • Alabama is the first team EVER to finish the season, beating the #1 and then the #2 teams. there's your playoff. if thats bogus, then they are all bogus, and there are NO National champions. welcome to college football.

  • Comment removed

  • is actually Alabama Crimson Tide....and try 13

  • @blooberflat22 I guess you meant that for me. I was looking at the AP, the old coaches Poll, which is now the ESPN and the BCS polls. Bama has 8 National titles in either or one of those polls. I discount the Dunkel, Billingsley or other polls. Now correct me if I am wrong, but Bama has more than 8 AP, Coaches poll or BCS Championships? If so, then I stand corrected on that. Anyway, I an sorry that you took offense my congratulatory comments, but this is the Internet I guess.

  • @starVol

oh yea man its cool i wasnt offended, didnt mean to come of as offended, and yea theres 8 AP Championships and 5 more official titles, unofficially though theyve won more than 13...im not sure how that works really but i know theres 13 claimed championships...unless youre an auburn fan....then its 8, an inbred sister, and a case of pabst blue ribbon....its funny because auburn fans always seem more concerned about bama than auburn....its entertaining though

  • @blooberflat22 Hey no problem. I came from a Big 10 family (Ohio State), but somehow along the way in life, I became a Vol fan. Alabama, Auburn or Tennessee are part of the great SEC in which I have always had enormous pride. As a Vol fan, I have always been envious of your National championships. I claim 2 AP, Coaches poll and BCS polls championships for the Vols, but many Vol fans claim 6 and I do not see that. Bama had a great year. Good luck in 2010, as if you all will need it. LOL

  • @starVol

thats cool, i hate ohio state, i honestly hate tennessee too, the football team....but have nothing against the fans, they bleed orange just like i bleed crimson which is cool with me, and most of the time your team is born and bred into you so if my dad would have been from tennessee and loved volunteers football id be a fan of them instead, which im glad im not lol, next year is gonna be tough, playing 6 teams coming off a bye week, all SEC games too, but good luck to yall too

  • Not only did UT Vols have 12 black players on the Varsity roster, but several were already starting (Lester McClain, Jackie Walker) just to name a few. Reg4321, I agree that this is a sad part of the history of the SEC.BTW, Congrats to Bama for winning the BCSNC in 2009 season!

  • Forget about the Vols, coach left to USC

  • I'm enjoying it very much. Especially watching people like you bitch. Racists are always good entertainment.

  • Just goes to show, sickness of the mind and heart is still with us, front and center!

  • The SEC should be embarrassed with this part of their football history.

  • It wasn't integrated until the Bear did it, regardless of who was first. Know what I mean?

  • @1920s Bear was not the first, but Bear gets the credit. Bear along with USC Trojans because it tells the story that people out of the South want to hear. That a Southern Football coach came to a west coast football coach with great humility for help in ending segregation in the :Insert Dracula's voice here: EVIL SEC. Even though Tennessee had almost 12 black players on roster by the time this

  • Bear saw the need to shut the door on the Tennessee Vols coming into the state of Alabama and getting all of the top black players. To Bear's credit, he was able to finally convince the powers that be in that state to change their policies on recruiting black football players. Because of Bear's efforts, he was able to keep Tennessee recruiters from taking the top black players.

  • USC was NOT the first integrated team to play an all white Bama team, Tennessee Vols were in 1969. All American Jackie Walker intercepted a pass against Bama and took it to the house in 1969. 2 Other black players played and contributed to that Vols win over Bama. I think the thing that scared Bear more than any West Coast team beating his Tide teams was one of his SEC rivals (Tennessee) recruiting the top black players out of Alabama to beat his Tide teams.

  • @starVol you're forgetting the significance of being from the westcoast we lived a completely different lifestyle from those in the south we had not just black people but other races living amongst us and it became a westcoast thing to be diverse. Sure Tennessee had black players but it still does not change the fact that the south still had and still does have some racial tension. The message was more diverse America vs segregated America. I don't think Tennessee could send that same message.

  • Saying that The University of Tennessee never had racial tension would never be a correct statement. My point was Tennessee recruited black players 5 years before Alabama ever had a thought of doing this.A USC fan pointed out to me that the West Coast has it's shares of hangups about race also. He pointed out that neighborhoods are still pretty much black and white. I have been to LA, you're telling me that those upper scale neighborhoods are the essence of diversity?

  • @starVol I'm not saying LA does not have racial tension but nothing is just all white or all black here. Our upperclass neighborhoods are usually Asian and white. Our lower class neighborhoods are Asian, black and Latino. Alot of the racial tension here is over gang territory or just class difference and not necessarily the fact that people are different in culture, not to say it doesn't happen. I'm just saying during that time Cali was known for pushing the envelope for integration.

  • @poompan I agree with most of what you're saying but you are forgetting the mostly black Baldwin Hills/Fox Hills area which is definitely upper class. And as far as racial tension, I would say black/hispanic cultural clash is easily the worst.

  • @starVol So saying that Tennessee would have had a bigger influence in integrating the football team is stretching it a bit. Maybe over time it would have happened when Tennessee filled more of their roster with black players but I think playing a westcoast team that embraced their black players and even allowed them to play QB sent a huge message to a Bama team unwilling to budge. Just my opinion not trying to diss I actually liked Tennessee big Berry fan here.

  • @poompan As I have pointed out. Tennessee brought an intergrated football team to Birmingham to play Bama in 1969. One year before USC came down there. The Vols ran wild against an all white Bama team. That is when the bell went DING in Coach Bryant's head. He said. I have to keep that Orange clad bunch of Vols from raiding His state of the top black players.

  • @poompan Let me ask you this. Do you know how many black players were on USC's team in 1970? I can tell yiou that Tennessee had about 10-12 black players when that USC Bama game was first played?

  • @starVol from what I have read SC had 19 black players on their squad at that time. i think you're misinterpreting what i'm saying. I know Tennessee was a good program and i do think Bryant feared losing good players to them and that is why he decided to play SC to send a message to Bama's higher ups which was "we need to integrate to compete" .

  • @starVol All i'm saying is that the message is much louder when it comes from a college in the LA area that is pioneer in the push for racial equality, than a college from a Tennessee area which still has a bad reputation for racial discrimination.

  • @poompan I dunno about Tennessee having such a bad reputation. I am 56 years old and I went to integrated public schools. Look, Tennessee was not Berkley, California, but compared to Alabama, Tennessee had a far more moderate political climate in that era. That is a fact.

  • @poompan You talk as if Tennessee was just an average program in 1970. Nah uh. The Vols had played UCLA twice and beaten UCLA both times. You are making assumptions based on your lack of knowledge of where Tennessee's program was in 1968-1970. Tennessee was a top program back then!

  • 2:51 I've always wanted to visit the Paul W. Bryan Museum.

  • Coach Bryant. The Greatest College Football Coach of ALL TIME!

  • CBS has played this show to where it's sickening. For one thing Auburn had a black player before Alabama did in both football and basketball Also Coach Bryant was friends with George Wallace and bigger friends with John Patterson who was more of a segregationist than George Wallace was at that time. The reason that Notre Dame won the national championship in 1966 was because of the love affair the media has always had with Notre Dame and they were not gonna crown Bama again.

  • Foxrob, I have an Auburn friend that told me that Auburn had black players on roster before Alabama had 1 black player. She has been a fan since the mid sixties of Auburn.

  • I have been a fan of Tennessee since the 1965 season. I know that Tennessee integrated the team in 1967 (black students were enrolled at Tennessee as early as 1961 0r 62) As I have said many times in this video posting commentary, by the time this USC-Bama game was played, Tennessee had double digit black football players on roster.

  • If they make this movie and continue to go on this theme that it was this game that integrated the SEC, It will be historically inaccurate. WRONG! If they want to see say that this USC-Bama game helped the University of Alabama to become the 5th SEC school to integrate, then I have no problem with that.

  • Read ONE NIGHT, TWO TEAMS: ALABAMA VS. USC AND THE GAME THAT CHANGED A NATION.

  • that change occurred several years ago at Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. If they make a movie, they will have to at least acknowledge that black football players were already on the rosters of Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. And just to save someone from posting that it was the first Nationally Prominent DEC team to integrate, well save your efforts because Tennessee in the mid sixties was ranked in the top 20 of all-time wins, all-time top 20 finishes and all-time bowl wins!

  • This is going to be made into a movie. The screenplay is about done and various actors' names are being bandied about
