Three pointer came into college basketball the next season. (Some leagues had experimented with it before but it was not a standard NCAA rule)So this was the last college game without the three pointer
Interesting note of history about this game. This game was the last college basketball game (major Division I) to be played WITHOUT the 3-pt shot. It was instituted the following season ('86-'87).
Watch at 2:07 Jeff Hall is celebrating/going for a lay up (whatever) and I believe Danny Ferry gives him a shove and then you a ball being thrown at Danny Ferry. Pretty funny.
@gymman1031 No, not at all. Coach K and the Duke players have never made excuses, but the Duke big men had nothing left. Duke had outlasted Danny Manning and Kansas in the semifinals two nights before, in a slugfest, while Louisville got to play an 11 seed in its semi. That's why Ellison went off in the final. Duke led this game by five with about six minutes left and had taken the momentum, but K had to slow it down because Alarie's legs were gone. This got Louisville back in the game.
Well, fair and square, championship teams find ways to get it done, even under adversity. And, after Denny Crum made those defensive adjustments in the Second Half after Dawkins was eating the Cards alive, the rest was history.
Ah, yea dummy because this was Coach K's 10th year as a head coach period so, he was supposed to out coach him. Plus Louisville had a better and more experienced team, great obsevation assclown.
@T82486 Haha! First of all, I will say that Coach K has had a better coaching career than Crum ever had. But Crum was SUPPOSED to outcoach him because he had more experience!? I have seen SO many coaches with less experience outcoach coaches with more experience. See Brad Stevens at Butler throughout the past two NCAA Tournaments. He outcoached multiple more experienced coaches. Also, Louisville had a better and more experienced team? Yes, they had guard Milt Wagner, Billy Thompson, and Ellison.
@T82486 But, Duke's team was better, IMHO. They won 37 games leading up to this game and played a much tougher schedule than Louisville. They had Johnny Dawkins, the high-scoring guard, who was the best player in America. They had Mark Alarie and Jay Bilas. They had point guard Tommy Amaker. They had solid freshman Danny Ferry. Yep, Duke had a more powerful team with an explosive offense. Crum made a few changes on defense during the Second Half, and the Blue Devils struggled.
Although he didn't play that well in this game, its nice to see my boy Milt Wagner go out on top. He had a stellar career at UofL; and still today, remains one of my favorite Cardinals.
notice cheap shot by Danny Ferry on Jeff Hall at the end of the game. Hall threw ball back at him and a small skirmish began. Duke was so arrogant that season - Jay Bilas still acts like he thinks they should be champs. Loved beating them and NC in 1986 to win the championship.
No team of today would come within 15 points of these two teams.

I don't see a 3-Point arc. There wasn't any 3 pointers in college at the time?

It's so weird looking at the court without the 3 point line.

Denny Crum flat outcoached Coach K for much of this game. Does anyone agree?
gymman1031 2 years ago 9
Hells yeah, I'm not a Duke Fan what so ever but that 85-86 Duke team was pretty damm good.
Yeah Crum outfoxed Coach K in this game, it reminds me of UCONN beating Duke in 1999.
