Calderas all across the world that are under large magma chambers like the one in Yellowstone frequently have earthquake activity and see the land rise and sink multiple times, and these eruptions are not predicted to occur for thousands of years from now.

this is not a pot of water, it's a giant super volcano. It'll take a LOT of large holes to relieve that much pressure, Another thing you need to take in account is that a lot of the ground is unstable. Even if you somehow make a drill that is capable of surviving in heavy sulfur and boiling mud and water, the drills will have to come in via helicopter. And what about the poisonous gases that will come up through these holes and could be carried by the wind?

Haha I live in Wyoming. I live really close to Yellowstone and have been there at least 20 times. There were some recent tremors under the lake there but they went away. The thing about yellowstone, is that the earthquakes will happen weeks before it explodes so you will know when to evacuate.

People who say it's "overdue" clearly don't know much about volcanic activity - they're not like clockwork. Will a megacaldera erupt some day? Yes. Will it be in our lifetime? I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
We're more likely to be hit by the asteroid Apophis during April 13, 2036.

to all who are freaking out just because there may be an eruption it does not mean it is a caldera eruption!! those are very rare and what the media isn't telling you is that there are to other forms of eruptions, one being hydrothermal which is what we most likely will see in the future and the second most likely is a lava flow, both are no where near as bad as the caldera eruption, so relax a little bit :)

The chance that the supervolcano erupts in December 2012 has the same chance of erupting any other day of the year. Calderas all across the world that are under large magma chambers like the one in Yellowstone frequently have earthquake activity and see the land rise and sink multiple times, and these eruptions are not predicted to occur for thousands of years from now.

i'm an earth and atmospheric science major and we have talked about the super volcano and the threat is real, but the way the doomsday prophets say the world is going to end is really ridiculous. just looking through their predictions it gets crazier as it goes on.
there are people in mexico who still follow the mayan calender and they dont even think the world is going to end, its just their new year in a way, we dont think the world is going to end every december 31st

Here living in gillette WYOMING I live about 400 miles away from it. Theres been several hundred earthquakes that hit yellowstone. All you can do is make a prayer to your god that this catastrophe will not happend we can not afford to neglect this supervolcano. Towns around it like cody wy, jackson. there done ounce that thing erupts. Here in gillette i have a chance. But America YOU WILL SEE ASH. 2/5/10. Best of luck to all.

01.23.2010 Update:
The USGS reports that Yellowstone has had well over a thousand Earth quakes in only seven days almost non-stop. This is anything but normal says geologist. 4 of these quakes rocked the park.
For 3 years in a row, about the same time, quakes gets worse and worse at Yellowstone. That equals a trend.

I live 60 miles from Yellowstone. This video is fear mongering. Read the article in a recent issue of National Geographic. Or read about it in many other sources.
2012 isn't even about the end of the world. Study up on Mayan history and their calander and their language. Mayan 2012 is hugely misunderstood and all hyped up.

Like when your pot of water is boiling the cover starts to rumble and eventually the water will over flow, but if you take the cover off it allows the steam to release and stops it from over flowing/bubbling over.

Problems with this"
this is not a pot of water, it's a giant super volcano. It'll take a LOT of large holes to relieve that much pressure, Another thing you need to take in account is that a lot of the ground is unstable. Even if you somehow make a drill that is capable of surviving in heavy sulfur and boiling mud and water, the drills will have to come in via helicopter. And what about the poisonous gases that will come up through these holes and could be carried by the wind?

Haha I live in Wyoming. I live really close to Yellowstone and have been there at least 20 times. There were some recent tremors under the lake there but they went away. The thing about yellowstone, is that the earthquakes will happen weeks before it explodes so you will know when to evacuate.

as for the super volcano, I dont' believe we'll see it in our lifetime, and even if we did, with all the technology we have now to predict the possibility of an erruption, it gives people enough time to prepare for the possible volcanic winter. It can be survivable.
