I found a little baby fish in my tank the other day and the day after my fish died......is it possible it died because of the fish inside her mouth? I thought I had an all male tank.....lol
males have spots on their lower fin by their tails females dont might have very little very small males are bigger in size than females males have longer upper and lower fins than females . I dont strip the mama instead I move her to a 10 gallon tank by her self , she will release the babies when she realizes that there are no other fish that will eat her babies works everytime after a day or few hours I move her back to the big tank fries grow up happy mama is happy everyone is happy
@BusaFalconer HEY THANKS I DONT GET A LOT OF COMMENTS SO ITS NOT HARD FOR ME TO ANSWER THEM. BUT WITH THAT SAID I HAVE HAD QUITE A FEW THAT I HAVEN'T ANSWERED JUST BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY.
do yellow labs care for the fry after they spit them out. like if another fish tries to eat them will they chase it away? just asking because one of my female yellow labs has some fry in her mouth (not sure how many but i can see some moving around). i have no idea how long they have been in her mouth or if they have been out yet. i noticed in one of your comments if the cichild hasnt had fry before you should strip them. i cant do that, will mine spit them out
@wolverine1865 so what, the mom will not eat them most of the time. but if she gets pissed no telling what she will do. other fish however will eat them. she will spit them if you leave her alone long enough, but some will get eatin. they hold for a little over a month somtimes a little longer. if its her first time have babies, and you want to keep as many as you can you may want to look into striping her.
@kagami1993 If she has had fry before you can let her spit them out. if it is her first time you may want to strip her to be honest even if she has had babies before she could still eat them are at least some of them. I always find it better to strip her for the best number ratio. you can leave her, she will spit them but there want be a lot left by the time she does she will eat some of them. hope this helps
@joyski12 YES JUST DONT MOVE THE ROCKS, BUT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CLEAN MOST OF THE SAND AND DO A WATER CHANGE. JUST DONT CLEAN THE SAND TO CLOSE TO THE ROCKS MOST OF THE FRY WILL BE PUSHED UP CLOSE TO THE ROCKS AND DECORATIONS IN THE TANK. HOPE THIS HELPS
@Guy23HD its been five days since my cichlid laid its eggs. on the 4th day all disappeared. no sight of anything yet till now. it is possible that the parents ate them?
@joyski12 Its very possible that they did, but she could have released them and there just hiding under rocks and stuff. They hide REAL well. you may just want to spend some time looking at your tank. I think you find them.
Thanks alot guys for this valuable information , Im glad I ran to this video , it helped me alot and answered lots of my questions , keep up the good work and thanks again .
Unless you know how to raise them with a egg tumbler, then as soon as they can swim in and out you can strip and separate them. In the wild it would be inhuman to strip fry from there moms protection but in a contained tank you help the mother eat early ( since she doesn't eat until the fry's leave her mouth fully).
@lolustupid look in the females mouth, if you see round balls too early, if you see eyes and hints of little balls(egg sac) still a little too early but you could strip. When the egg sac is gone then you can strip.
wtf i put my fry in a breeders net right..all of a sudden my electric yellow starts biting the net..one frys head off..i got so nervous i switched it in the tank..my red zebra fry..
That's if the cichlid is in the wild with predatory fish as a factor, then about 1 in every hundred fry will survive and these Cichlid's can produce 200 when they reach maturity and increases as they grow older. Your stupid jack ass probably forgot to mention that factor, or someone forgot...
no I raise all mine in a ten gallon later when they get bigger i move them to a 20 and when the were of size i put them into my big tank and let them fight it out with all the other fish. they should be fine. welp good luck
oh this reminds me of when i had cichlids. i would always release the fry after they have been in the moms mouth for 18 days. by then they are developed enough to live on their own. i didnt use a pen though but rather my hand. after releasing the fry i would release the mom back into the out reg 50 gallon tank and would let the fry live in a breeders net in a 10galloon tank.
Yes but you know as well if you are trying to keep these fry you will most likely have to stripe her of them after a month are so. this was also her first time to hold and usually they will eat just about all of their fry the first time. she had already eaten a lot of them and i didnt want to lose anymore of them. so I felt that in order for me to keep them then i would have to stripe So i did and all of the fry live i did not lose one of them and shes fine and now i have a tank full of Fish.
If you know what you are doing she will be fine This vid is over a year old and she has been pregnant like 6 times since this vid. I haven't ever striped her since this time but she is fine and again if you know what your doing and are careful she will be fine. And it was a bawl point pen it wasnt sharp and i didnt hurt her at all.
hey m8 can u please tell me, how long after a pair finish breeding do the eggs hatch...can if i move them to a different tank should i move both the male and female or only the female...
In case your still wondering, after spawning it usually takes 1 week to hatch. By the end of the 2nd week the fry have consumed all, or the majority of, their egg yolk and the female will generally release around 3 weeks. If you move them, move the female only, or strip the fry and put them in their own grow-out tank for the best survival ratio.
How old were they when you let them back in?
shanjith1 1 month ago
@shanjith1 I WAITED SEVERAL MONTHS UNTIL I KNEW THEY WERE TO BIG TO BE EATING. AT LEAST 4-6 MONTHS MIN.

If I stripped cichlids (I Don't) I would have use the clip on the cap of that pen not the writing end of the pen.
That's a beauty of a electric yellow though!
