  • Should have won the civilian end of this 4X, but had a rifle go down at 600yds due to operator malfunction in 1997. The man had an over-ride, did not follow procedure and never got a single shot fired. We lost to IL by the score of a single bullet at 600 yds. Came back and won it again in '98.

This is the ultimate team event because you had better have your ducks in a row and be a polished machine that fires on all cylinders. You only get one chance and there are zero alibis.

  • It doesn't matter what your damn MOS is or was every Jar Head is a basic rifle man! I still compete today as does my friend and we were airwing. We all have to qualify throughout our Military career! To this day I can still shoot a round up a flys ass at 500 meters. BTW I was stationed with VMFA 232 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay Hawaii and with VMFA 112 Dallas Texas 1981-1989 Semper Fi. I just wanted to clear up any confusion.

  • Are they using national match rifles?

  • USMarineRifleman0311... You are correct about wartime. The team is suspended during times of major conflict.

  • USMCM249gunner. Your post from 5 months ago asked a question (are these guys predominantly infantry or what? ) Now you seem to be an expert. Like I said before. As a member of the team in 86. It is scores only. Talent only gets you on the team. An office poogy can make the team if he can rack up x's at a 1000 yards. Sounds to me like you don't know much about the team and should not comment on it to me. But that is just my opinion. You are totally wrong about infantry shooting on the team.

  • @pangavamanos

well this is a cool little team to belong to within the Corps, but like he said, I doubt many grunts have time for stuff like this during wartime

  • Most Grunts aspire to become ANYTHING but a grunt Sturmmann. If your a "good" shot any Marine at the time I was in could make it to THE team. Scores got you there. Maybe it is different now, I don't know. There are plenty of grunts that end up sniping. Not sure what your talking about. Either you try to go to the school or your are encouraged to go. They generally don't come from the Air Wing... But might.

Sturmmann were you a Jar Head? Just curious. This team is way above the level of 8541

  • @pangavamanos

Ive never heard of a single grunt dream of becoming a rifle team competitor

it sounds like a boot's dream of becoming a DI or PMI....all the grunts ive met dont care, they just want to deploy, and if they can get a slot at the SS school, they wont deny it.

but rifle team? it seems like only the best shots have those fascinations

I remember some terrible rifle qual weeks that turned me off a couple times for a number of reasons, not my score tough

  • To answer if they are infantry...

When I shot on the team in 85-86 the team was made up of a pretty good cross section of the whole Corps. From younger to older, officers and enlisted, air wing and grunts alike even some office poggies. My best friend on the team flew an F-4 Phantom.

Jim Cpl USMC Quantico team. FYI I was a grunt...

  • @pangavamanos

Most grunts aspire to become 8541 SS, and theyre tied up by deployments to ever even dream of being on the rifle team. Ive never heard of a single sharpshooting grunt getting picked for this or volunteering for it.

  • dills2403 -- maybe.. but leathernecks look better.

USMCM249 -- some are, each tho only serve 3 years on the USMC shooting team, then 1 year required overseas.

  • are these guys predominantly infantry or what?

  • lol the army was better ....

  • @dills2403

    bullshit

  • sounds like popcorn haha

  • Got to love those Devil Dogs. They are no slouches behind a rifle. Many foreign cemeteries will attest to that.

  • I want to shoot for the Marine rifle team one day!

  • Does the USMC team use free floating barrels?

  • National Match AR's all use free floating barrels. The sling loop is attached to the float tube instead of the sight tower.
