If you can speak Malay , Japanese is rather easy since it is closer in terms of phonetical pronounciation and origin.

Yes , culturally Chinese had influenced Japanese linguistic words through loan words but the core pronounciation is still much Malay Indo-Proto-Polynesian Origin which means , Japanese are actually Malays. Not Chinese as most would agree on and there are notiable KOREAN influence in the Japanese culture.

Basically Japanese is Malay + Korean.
