Most of you people complaining about John Cho not being fluent in Korean. Don't judge him because you don't know his life. There are plenty of Asian-Americans who aren't exactly fluent in the their "parents" "native" language i.e. Jeremy Lin (whose parents are from Taiwan). Although it would be great for him to speak multiple languages, at least he's not completely White-washed and only dates like White girls and doesn't shun away from the Asian-american communities.
omg. i don't know why kpop stars and korean actors in korea get plastic surgery, they are sooooo handsome with out it. HELLO, john cho is like a prime example!
Such a disgrace that he cant speak his own language lol...I am currently stationed in Korea now, for eight months and I probably know more Korean than him
@armydaniels91 I went to a keynote event at UC Berkeley where he was a panelist. Before you call him a disgrace maybe he should understand his story . He moved to the US when he was six. He learned english because obviously that was the only language taught in school at that time. His father used to make him learn english and as time progressed, he lost his korean because of the language gap between him and his parents and because of expectations of the school. Its hard to explain but yeah...
@armydaniels91 it's hard, especially if your folks are trying to learn english as quickly as possible so that they can integrate themselves into the community. Unless they consciously decide that you aren't allowed to speak english at home and set down rules it's quite easy to let your mother language slip away, and 5-6 years later, you can barely speak a word.
Aww hes so cute being all serious. He musta been nervous being watched by a whole nation, that he was raised in but doesnt kno that well. I love him, hes freakin talented. And by the way I'm black so not only asians love him. <3 John Cho all day!!
He's a first generation. I'm sure he spoke Korean at home with his parent(s) for a long time. So I don't know why he's not fluent in it. Was he adopted or something?lol
I love and have so much respect for John Cho! He is one of the few Asian American actors I look up too, especially after this interview. About him not being able to speak his language, I think it would be nice but not important. I wouldn't want him doing more Korean films than American films because there are too few respectful Asian American men in Hollywood. I also loved how he used Will Smith as an example of an actor that can play completely different roles.
@cinemasia He's not considered a foreigner in Korea, but an overseas Korean. He can speak Korean, but basic Korean. He needs to present his best self, so he needs to use the language he speaks best, English.
LOL you very obviously don't speak 3 languages if you think speaking slowly and awkwardly helps translators or even people who are learning your language. Speaking with people who are not fluent is not the same as communicating through a translator... yet more evidence that you have no experience with cross language situations. You're just embarrassing yourself.
Obviously you speak one language. Speaking slowly doesn't help anyone translate well. Even for people who are learning a new language shouldn't be spoken that slowly too unless they are learning at a level where they are learning the alphabet and learning to read. Also translated languages can be just as engaging if not more. No offense.
@melonbarmonster Well, some people do speak slowly because they think it helps translators. Simultaneous interpreters have to translate on the spot, so speaking slowly can help them catch the words faster and give them time to think over their translation.
I think it would be important for him to speak korean because of his roots. it would be embarassing to me to come to the land I was born and not to know how to speak the language
@fsan2005 It's understandable if he didn't grow up there or didn't grow up speaking the language. If I were him, I would want to learn just to be more connected to the culture and stuff. I have Mexican friends whose parents didn't teach them Spanish because they didn't want them to grow up with accents and stuff. Now, they feel like they are missing out on stuff because of it.
john cho's a pretty cool guy. i respect him. what i don't like is bobby lee cuz' he'd take any role, that includes the ones where is has to do stereotypes. just look at madtv with his asian stereotypes. i find it bit insulting.
Ahaha this is such an awkward interview though. I totally feel for you John Cho - I feel the same way when I have to talk to my parents friends who don't speak english. ugh.
I came to America when I was 6 also, and I can speak basic Korean. I can relate to John, on why he chose to speak english. I he were to speak Korean he would sound like a 4 year old kid. I didn'[t even understand the interviewers questions. lol
@Lazyboyz702 No shit African Americans have been around for generations. Not just them but for any nationality they tend to forget their mother language. But this guy was born in Korea. Totally different!
@tkglobe85 yeah but he moved to America when he was six, so it's not weird that he doesn't speak it. If anything blame the parents, as they obviously didn't speak it to him enough for him to remember it.
@rabbitsmakemesquirm that what america does to people. Please all the people here in sweden that are born here with immigrant parents speak their parents language 100% of the times.
what's harold doing here??he's supposed to be eating white castle's in guantanamo bay in christmas, lol

Always nice to see asian actors with enough self-respect for himself and his ethnicity to not settle for "stereotype" roles.
