@Finglesham AW loved this sketch. He included it on his Journey of a lifetime program celebrating 50 years of travelogues and reporting, so good i bought the DVD.
Alan Whicker loved this and wrote them. John Cleese sent back an autographed photo of the troupe at Winterton (UK resort where it was filmed) Norfolk in full Whicker costume with a note; "here's the evidence". A bit of worthless trivia...
Father Pierre, why did you stay on in this colonial Campari-land where the clink of glasses mingles with the murmur of a million mosquitoes, where waterfalls of whisky wash away the worries of a world-weary Whicker, where gin and tonic jingle in a gyroscopic jubilee of something beginning with J
Father Pierre, why did you stay on in this colonial Campari-land where the clink of glasses mingles with the murmur of a million mosquitoes, where waterfalls of whisky wash away the worries of a world-weary Whicker, where gin and tonic jingle in a gyroscopic jubilee of something beginning With J - Father Pierre, why did you stay on here? LMFAO!
It recently inspired Harry & Paul to do a parody called "Clarkson Island" poking fun at TOP GEAR's Jeremy Clarkson. In the intro, they pan past Whicker Island on the map.
" Father Pierre, why did you stay on in this colonial Campari land? Father Pierre, why did you stay on?"
ROFL! Python rules! Although the original is undoubtedly the best I am rather fond of the 'Clarkson Island' paradoy by Harry and Paul. I love Top Gear but Jeremy Clarkson does my head in!
i watched the whole series on youtube but i bought the expensive set anyway, it's so much better coz you have your own set to share and laugh without having to count on internet loading.
Alan Whicker effectively invented the modern genre of TV journalism as we know it; the reporter doing the piece to camera, reporter walking and talking in shot, reporter as part of the story. He was an Army correspondent during WW2 - with the Army film unit during the campaign in Italy. A great man, great journalist - a real pro. He currently lives in Jersey. When asked once what six things he'd take to a desert island he replied:
He is a famous travel writer type. Except, in place of writing, he interviewed people on television. And he interviewed just about everyone. He now lives in France, I think, or possibly Jersey. Still wears the same clothes, I believe.
So THIS is where they got the idea to the "Clarkson island" sketch

I met Mr. Whicker today in Cawsand, UK. I am from the US and didn't know how famous he was.

Surely the real AW saw this as a compliment to his well known programmes. There is no bad publicity etc. A real gem though.

'Harry & Paul - Clarkson Island'.
It's basicly the same joke,
but with J. Clarkson.
Homage or rup-off - you decide,
but it's still pretty funny.
