These recordings were all done after midnight when the bands and orchestras on the piazza had stopped playing - we never saw the sun inside when we were recording - it certainly is beautiful in the picture you
Virgins?......well it was the 60's - I think not BUT they were all required to wear smocks which covered their legs below the knees - so the pictures taken from that trip show the women in white "overcoats."
Soloists on this are Richard Levitt, countertenor and Dale Jergensen, tenor - there are still a lot of "us" around who sang on this recording - a most amazing experience for us all. This was almost a realization of my life's ambition....to sing Monteverdi @ St Mark's Bascillica - Oh well, Gabrieli was fine. I actually got to hear us "live" (I was the only singer who had this experience) as I was sent home to change out of the Bermuda shorts I wore to the first rehearsal - it was mind boggling!
This comes from a fabulous album, though the making of it is a good read if you can get the cover/flyleaf. There is something very special about this music and especially this performance of it.
I believe that music puts us in touch with what is heavenly, and this is one.Gabrieli , thank you!

@DennisOfTheExplorers --
Stories go around that, to be allowed to sing in St Mark's, the women of GSS had to pledge that they were virgins. Any truth in that?
