  • As ever with American films, it's sex first and foremost, action, naked bodies, human relationships blah blah blah, beautiful women and men of course, all trivial surface foam, no depth. Not surprising the writer wrote a note to the Czech edition of the book saying that the movie had very little to do with the spirit either of the novel or the characters in it. What about the dog Karenin?

  • does anybody knows which is the name of the last song? sounds like a tango or something

  • there are only a few movies out in the world that have the power to touch you deeply. this is one of them. an almost perfect adaption of the well written novel by milan kundera. it´s all in there what our modern lives are about: love, tragedy, revolution, loss, grief and the The Unbearable Lightness of Being...

  • @dustofsoul You do know Kundera hated the film right?

  • @randwan well i give shit what the auther himself was thinking about the movie. s. king did´nt like kubricks version of shining - today it´s a classic of horror-movies, and so on. of course there are bad examples of books to movie adpatations - but not in this case! what do you think?

  • tonight on BBC1 .. enjoy :)

  • that is so awesome!

  • Im a huge DDL fan,but i dont think this is my type of film

  • Great great great movie!

  • This book is amazing, I almost read it in one day ´cause I just couldn´t stop :D

  • Don't judge a book by its movie. :)

The movie is fine, but the book is a masterpiece.

  • what's the name of the song in the end of the trailer? can someone tell me please?

  • This is the most beautiful film I have ever seen, it pictures life itself... Naturally, the novel is far better. Pure philosophy, feelings, ... Wonderful.

  • @037016 i was listening the audio book of the novel while i was driving from east to midwest lastweek .what a wonderful feeling !! .The novel was philosophical but I was amazed how Philip Kaufman could convert the abstract philosophy into this great film

  • @raazs35 Yeah, the film really stands up to the novel, which is unusual.

  • its one of 5favorites from Beatles actually

  • this is one of my favorite movies but i cant find it anywhere...booo

  • I love this, does anybody know the name of the song at 0:44?

  • @diegojqn

Hi Diegojqn, you asked the name of the song. It's a gem written by The Beatles named "Hey Jude."

  • not W triple

  • @mitsubaclover

Hi Mitsubaclover, you asked the name of the song. It's a gem written by The Beatles named "Hey Jude."

  • and i just found relationship of Tomas&Teresa is like him&me!

"he considered her fidelity an unconditional postulate of their relationship" until he found her charm when dancing with other men.

    but that's MANKIND・・・?

  • im reading now

    philosophical=easy to read

  • I loved the book and the movie!

  • ×存在の堪えられない、軽さ

    ○存在の、堪えられない軽さ

  • she is the actress i once felt HATRED, i dont know why

    maybe too MILKY・・・

  • Unbearable Lightness of Being・・・

  • how did i not know there was a movie of this book?

  • What is the name that violin soundtrack?

  • The book was really awesome! I liked the way kundera criticises society, people, everything, how he analyses emotion, behaviours, etc. Just amazing! By watching this trailer, I have the impression the filmmakers haven't understood anything of the essence of the book... and indeed it's rather impossible to make a movie about that, because how can you show such a lot of ideas, of philosophies, in a movie?

  • I really like Phillip Kaufman's work and I'm hoping this is a good film.

  • the book has to be the most boring and overrated piece of crap i have ever had to read. I read it a few years ago in high school cause we had to write an essay about it for final exams. Or maybe was it just terribly translated to our language, i dont really know. No, and its not that my mind is not on the level of this book, cause it really is, i love to read but there was nothing special about this book mr. Kundera.

  • My favourite book.

There is something about Juliette Binoche that reminds me of my mother : her smile, but also the way she wipes her tears, starting from the middle of her nose, vertically.

My mother says my spirit is like Lena Olin's character.

How strange and light life and beings are :)

  • Binoche is a fox.

  • Lena Olin was a piece of ass then, but Juliette is like great wine, better and better every year, oh for just one night.....

  • one of the greatest cast. i love them all.. but the novel is more than anything in the world

  • looks...interesting...any good?

  • Such a beautiful film!

  • Im sure that any movie adapted from a stupid, insipid, and pretentious novel will be stupid as well.

  • @lollipopfop Considering your utterly fatuous comment, you haven't read the book! It is anything but insipid or pretentious! It is truly a beautiful thought evoking story, and I have not come across anything alike. The book exudes wisdom and tempts you to underline every magnificent line and passage (which yes, unfortunately, but understandably cannot be conveyed in the same manner or any manner at all in a film adaptation). It's a contemporay classic. BR from Finland. Now go read some books!

  • @lollipopfop you are absolutely ridiculous to call the novel "stupid."

  • @lollipopfop pauvre de toi ! the novel is just a masterpiece he should and will win the nobel prize and you well hhhh no comment

  • I agree! it's so not appropriate for a digital version. I've read it, and I honestly couldn't think of a way to can express Milan Kundera's message in a movie.

  • nae seen this yet, is it ony good??

  • masterpiece movie

  • Oh lawd, Daniel Day Lewis' hair is accurate for the period anyway!

  • Never seen this movie. Is it as good as the book?

  • lena olin and juliette binoche are both brilliant in this amazinf film..

  • 1:13 what is the name of the melody?

  • Comment removed

  • OMG Binoche is drop dead gorgeous!

  • I've just realized that Juliette Binoche is the most beautiful woman in the world.

And I've also realized that Daniel Day-Lewis is the most handsome man in the world.

I would even like to see this movie, because I like films like this,

    Awesome!@

  • I very much hope you have seen Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, it has subtitles but it is required watching for those who fall in love with such things as violins, and butterflies and whirligigs :)

  • Wow. They're all so young in this movie! I hardly recognized Daniel Day Lewis.

  • The film is nothing against the novel...

  • the day i saw this movie the first time i can still remember now. this is surely in my top5 best ever.

  • Juliette Binoche was and still is one of the most beautiful women in the world. I've loved her ever since I saw this beautiful movie. Her dance in the cafe towrds the end of the movie, her beautiful expression and movements jsut melts my heart. Je t'adore Juliette.

    Jubinne

  • W filmie o Czechach, Czesi gadają po angielsku z tym wschodnioeuropejskim akcentem. Masakra.

  • love how Juliette Binoche clings on to Daniel Lewis,(literally) when they first make love,,, it brings you back to that one time where you are weak and can't let go,,, at the beginning anyway

  • this and more movies in a daily growing list at

    movies-online-only blogspot com

  • i feel like i'm one of the only people who loves both the book and the movie... i agree that you don't get the complete story in the movie version, but i think the director did a good job compressing at least some of the novel. i think you have to look at them as different stories in order to like them both.

  • I don't think that the novel is suitable for a film remake. There are too many things that cannot be expressed through the art of film.

Cinema is more concerned with the actions of their protagonists. The novel is more concerned with the fears and desires of the characters.

  • @FacnyCatFighter I may be biased since I'm a filmmaker, but I believe that while it's true actions are more easily capture in film, that does not mean that fears and desires cannot be captured just as well using creative means. After all, that really is what film narrative is about, the emotion of characters not what they are doing - ask any editor. There are thousand of tools to capture the emotions of the characters (cinematography, music, acting, etc).

  • @FacnyCatFighter For what it's worth, Kundera was very displeased with the film and has since inserted a clause in all his works that they cannot be adopted in any form, period.

I love the movie, but don't compare it to the novel. You have to forget one to enjoy the other.

  • @FacnyCatFighter I agree in the sense that you have to read to book to truly understand the ending. Watching it again after reading the book made it a better movie for me though.

  • @FacnyCatFighter True, because you cannot show the inner workings and feelings and thoughts of the characters on screen like you can in a novel.

  • @FacnyCatFighter WIld disagreement.

  • @FacnyCatFighter For exactly that reason they are not comparable, and tell different stories. They share a title, but like two different works may provide audiences with different reflections of their own lives.

  • sagt was ihr wollt mir gefällt es, checkt mal HeisseZone . com da kann man als kerl was lernen

  • the author tries so hard to justify his infidelity

  • If you watched the movie you understood nothing

  • there is a distinction to be made between the narrator and the author.

  • Juliette Binoche is the hotness here.

  • I loved the book and only jus found out there is a film! I met Daniel on a film set and we had a talk about time, he is very shy

  • Kundera, como me place... uno de esos placeres inigualable.

  • is that be stiller at 1:20?

  • hahaha, no, it is daniel day-lewis, but he looks indeed a littlebit like ben stiller hahahaha, funny

  • i love kundera!

  • i feel depressed after reading his novels

  • me too, but that's the point!!

  • damn kundera!

  • we're reading unbearable lightness this semester. i hope it's a good one. : )

  • The book is one of my favourite books, but I have yet to watch this movie. I will buy it when I get paid :)

  • Beatiful Movie 5*

Cast is very nice - London, French, Dutch and Swedish actors.

  • What is the piano and violin song that sounds sfter the invasion

  • The best film ever I saw in my life !!!

I love Lena and Juliette for acting in this film.

I travelled a lot in E-Europe during the cold war and admired the books of Kundera, who describes so precise the atmospheres.

  • Eu sempre imaginei a Sabina como a atriz que faz a Tereza e a a Tereza como a atriz que faz a sabina.

Estou lendo o livro pela segunda vez e agora estou baixando o filme.

I allways imagine Sabina like Tereza actress, and Tereza like Sabina actress.

I'm reading the book for the second time, and now i'm downloading the movie.

  • daniel he is so charming<3

  • So...does anyone know what the "nanana" song after Sabina's mirror scene is?

  • sure, its a part of the beatles hey jude :)

    great song

  • Hey Jude from The Beatles.

I just read the book and didn't even know there was a movie...

  • the song is "hey jude", but not the beatles version

  • I love the music that Juliette dances in the cafe. She is soooooooo beautiful. I've seen this movie so many times and it is one of my favorite movies of Juliette. Well, I'm madly in love with her!

    Jubinne

  • this might be my favorite movie.

  • this looks hot.

  • my favorite character is Karenine, the dog

  • hehehe..

  • lol

  • and my favorite character is sabina! mwahaha!

  • uh no. because i'm a girl. i think we have the same personality.

  • bitch!

  • yes i am.

  • This movie should be retitled The Unbearable Hotness of Lena Olin.

  • i think it's just really hard for this book to be converted into a movie in general. seriously, it would be so difficult to show the various dream sequences of each character and still have it make sense without making sideline commentaries...

that being said, i haven't watched the movie and still need to find a copy :(

  • I agree. it is not the kind of novel that can be made into a movie. the beautiful thing about the novel is that it takes you deeep into the thoughts of the characters and deep into their personalitites and that what made the novel a joy to read. I have not watched the movie and i don't think I will

  • your'e wrong, you should free your mind and see the movie it's a great one. In fact, i consider both the movie and the book are masterpiece, each one in its category if i may say so.

  • Jee....What is so bad about the movie? I think the actors in this movie play very well and the images in this movie are beautiful to watch. I don't know what age you people are, but in the sixties things were different you know. You find it maybe silly, but life in eastern Europe in the sixties was different then your lifes now 2009 in the west. This film is about FREEDOM, something you all know, but for most people in this film it's a difficult subject. That's what the film is about!

  • I just finished the book and I've got the feeling the movie has got a completely different atmosphere. It seems like a happy lovestory, while the book is so much more. I'm not going to watch this movie.

  • :) same here, I can still feel the spirit of the book, it´s really touching and the movie would only crush the atmosphere... besides, english language seems really disturbing here...

  • the book was great! i've read it for 4 times already!

  • the lover's story is a bit silly, I prefer the prague spring thing which is better described in the book.

  • I love the book.

  • This is one of my favorite films, I have seen the film already three times! But I am 40, so maybe that has something to do with it. Go to Prague, the most romantic city you can imagine!

  • yes, it has:)

  • The only part of this trailer that captured my interest was the part where Tereza took the picture of the chaos while one of the russian guys were pointing a gun at the people.

I still love the book, though. Hope the film will be better than the trailer.

  • oh my dear, did you never see the film? it´s one of the greatest adaptations of a great book as well. next to "out of africa" , "the sheltering sky" and "the english patient" it´s one of my favorite movies. and the score, written by janacek, long before the movie, is so wonderful...

  • kundera hated the adaptation and was furious at it. im gonna trust him ...hmmm

  • Comment removed

  • @headspace00 you shouldn't

  • The book is soooo much better!

  • trailer sucks ass, makes it seem like a comedy.

  • i didn´t understand anything, i just saw a lot of kissing

  • Does anyone know the song at the very end of this trailer?

  • Sorry, I just found out. It's "Two Guitars" a folk song

  • Interesting!

  • :-)

  • UNBEARABLE is the right word...the tension is incredible.

  • Bad trailer to a good film. Though of course the book is much better.

  • Matter of perception. 'Animal House' qualifies as 'sexual' overtone, not this masterpiece. The characters are full of riches we all strive for... vitality, childlike (not childish) exploration of sexuality, passion, humor, warmth/love, connectivity. In spite of human errors they reach deeper within themselves for one another. Stirred my mind. Made me laugh, weep, aroused... Provoking. Highly recommend the film, will read the book to imagine my own visuals (remember: Words are pictures too).

  • Nicollissa, your comment is as much a pleasure to read as this clip is to watch!

  • Amen, my thoughts exactly.

  • This film in insult to an amazing book. A book that shows how complex we all are becomes a film simply about sex with one dimensional characters. This film was a let down.

  • toatally right

  • dead123 The book is very powerful indeed. But Binoche is spellbinding and plays the contradictions and ambiguities inherent in the text with a gentle charm. Come on........she is simply wonderful and transcends all the 'sex'

  • milan kundera said to have hated that film and regretted he allowed such monstrosity...his book has too much power and freedom...something the film never had...

  • A work of Genius.

  • milan kundera is a genius.

  • This is my favorite book EVER! I didn't know there was a film! =O

  • don't watch it! don't let the book get ruined for you!

  • omg is THAT bad?

    hahaha

OK I won't watch it.. anyways, the book is always better than the film even if the film is good hehe

  • One of the few films where the movie is as good as the book! Daniel Day Lewis is incredibly sexy. When I saw it in the cinema rhe first time I stayed throughout the night to watch it over and over again!

  • what is the song at 1:25!

  • WTF? Hey Jude?

  • Yes, part of the West comming to the Eastern block. The version is fitting.

  • that music is awsome what is it called and i like the actress shes a verry good actress

  • As far as adult movies are concerned, I like the Binoche-Lewis combination...their chemistry seems to work well on the big screen so to speak.

  • I've nearly finished the book, but I rather wonder how they could possibly turn the book into a movie that could be anywhere near as good. Thus, I really want to see this movie.

  • random, for the beauty and quality of the actors, this is one of the rare case where is difficult to say which is best..

  • Does anyone have the instrumental music from this trailer?

  • one of my favorite movies.

  • I've never watched the film but i've just the finished the book - i loved it. Funny cos seeing that trailor - it is nothing like how i saw it in the book(its more vibrant) but i'd really like to watch it, it looks good.

  • The film faces the cinema limitations: it cant cover the whole story. So the book is somewhat better than the movie. But the movie is definitly worth seeing.Top class actors, with inspiring performance.

  • Cheers.

  • its true.. im half way through atm and the contemplative element is ever present in the book. i hope they did not just make this a "sexy" movie for the sake of sex.

oh well, have to watch it i guess.

  • daniel day lewis + juliette binoche + lena olin = hot

  • Passione In A Worlde Gone Madde!

  • The music in the second half reminds me of Chocolat.

  • please, please

where i can find the last song that play's at the end of the trailer?

i can't find that exact version

please if some one could help me, it will realy makes me happy

  • I`m sorry did you hear any music at the and of the film - don`t believe everything , it`s just Ilusion !!!

    Pa pa

  • I hated the movie, I'm too in love with the book. And... I mean, it has amazing actors, a great director, nice music, fantastic locations... and all failed! This book can't be just a movie, it has to be a tv. series, at least!

This book is unbelievable! incredible! I can't work like a movie. Nevertheless, there are few scenes in the movie that I really like. Example: the Great March scene!

the masterpeice of Phillip Kaufman is QUILLS.

  • One of the great films of the 1980s.

  • Is the film as good as the book?

From what i can see in this trailer, the film seems to explode too much the erotic part, meanwhile the book was more metaphisic... is that correct?

  • Yes,

His relationships with the other women was only a sexual relationship, no romance until Tereza appeared.

  • yeah.. the book is great, the movie is good specially 'cause Daniel Day-Lewis is awsome.

  • The book was genius, the movie was hot... The Unbearable Lightness of Being is incredible in every way.
