  • Does anyone know of a place to get a DVD copy of this concert/show. My mother and I watch it together before she died and she was a great fan of his, ME TOO!!

  • read carcriticassessor's comments dont really care about the symbolism or the sexual orientation of the singers i just enjoyed the song. maybe he/she should try the same thing?

  • @seeme011: She (or he) went from looking lovely, with some semblance of "natural", warped in an artfully crafted (err, peroxide) nearly angelic fair-haired-gal, projecting a refined, intelligent and sincere image to effectively repelling her fan base in an ill-advised bid to remain "relevant" and current, repackaged in 1980s "material girl" loud-brassy-tackiness...with a whole lot of err dyke tossed into the mix....right? Wow -- what a waste...a nightmare course in self-debasement

  • @CarCriticAssessor You weren't raised well at all. What an inane diatribe!

  • Wow -- come to think of it -- a lovely pair of Jewish singers; he ... predominately gay; s(he), once she got really physical, but, on-again-off-again: LOL | the NAKED truth kids ........ research it; it's all out, so to speak, there; good to know whence the imagery that generations are inculcated with ... beneath the surface of aplomb, serendipity & all-would-be-splendid-sans-incisive-analysis: REALITY-CHECK ...now go don your fairy-feathers and fly away: LOL

  • @CarCriticAssessor I agree that her earlier image was so much more appealing than the "Let's Get Physical" era.

  • @strawberryseason: Yes, you said it; she had been utterly lovely ... a bit of a manufactured "granola angelic purity" .... a seemingly natural wholeness; but, nonetheless, she had been utterly irrepressibly attractive, and sincere, if such things can be attributed to a ... err .... pop-tart star, for which she later ... um ... ascended. Such a pity, indeed, and slightly anorexic aside from tacky, androgynous (at best reading) and somewhat, well, manic; no? LOL

  • @CarCriticAssessor I think that the perceived androgeny was more due to the 1980s hair & clothing styles. I am not sure that was calculated on her part. I do like her earlier wholesome, natural image. The brassiness you mention seemed to emerge when she did Grease, a film I never did care for.

  • @strawberryseason: You deploy euphemism ... palatable ... heck, even charming commentary you expound; but, putting lip-stick on a pig, so to speak, does only the anesthetized good-biding, and that tact discourages germane candor. Thanks all the same ;-)

  • What a great track. Not heard this belore - thanks

  • the volume is so low

  • FLY AWAY John Denver & Olivia Newton-John BEST QUALITY has much better video / picture than this one.

  • john is the best performer i have ever seen!!!!......period....

  • This kind of music turned to rap CRAP!

  • Mobil

  • avampireconfesses . com

  • Weintrab also managed Karen Carpenter after 1976. We all know what happend.

  • @ionthetarget What did Mr. Weintraub have to do with Karen's anorexia?

  • @jac2623 never said anything about his having anything to do with Karens' anorexia. . Read more carefully and do not assume. Happy New Year.

  • Olivia recently hosted the concert when John was inducted into the Colorado Hall of Fame. His kids, and 2 ex-wives were there to accept the award. There's some great pics if anyone wants to google them.

  • Two of the purest voices ever.

  • I remember this special! I was 12, we taped on a cassette player, played it to pieces!!

  • Man could he rock a stage shirt or what??? Awesome.

  • love them both.....and miss John...and his great voice....

  • I saw this special! So excellent!!!!!

  • Olivia Newton-John was so freaking hot back then. Damn.

  • Yep, always seems to be one in the crowd with quaking knees and Jesus pleas. That's a private belief, everyone has their own idea of spirituality...

  • Always has to be a dope throwing Jesus in there, no matter what the topic.

  • Great tune. Some might say a fitting epitaph. Fly away to your eternal reward, John, and rest in peace.

  • I'm in tears. Thank you. I miss him SO much!

  • This is from 1975, not 1974. The TV special also included an up and coming comedian and banjo player with an arrow thru his head, Steve Martin.

    see imdb title tt0414458

  • Beautiful song. One of my favorite John Denver songs. Great collaboration by two of my favorite singers of all time.

  • First heard this song at Kadena AFB, Okinawa in 1976. Have loved it ever since!

  • Why is she listed first?

  • good song

  • I think John rolled over in his grave with some of the comments on Olivia Newton Johns' appearance - I guess some people just don't "get" John Denver at all. For the rest of us - he was brilliant! She had (and has) the voice of an angel!

  • @7808521113 Hee. John had a major crush on Olivia,& thought she was pretty hot,so I'm sure he'd excuse some of the slightly libidinous ones. She was gorgeous,no denying.

  • I remember this!! I loved that song!!

  • God Olivia was Gorgeous !!!!!!!!

  • She's had botox on her lips. So now she looks like a fish. What's the term ? . . . . . trout pout. So fucking ugly. Why do people have to turn into morons and botox themselves into plastic fags once they're in the fishbowl of public life? Ahhhh . . . . fishbowl. I see.

  • @auntypizza Kinda like Gene Simmons's old lady!! She looks like Donald Duck now. sad.

  • this was when music felt us..grabed us..when music...gave heart to our ears and when TV gave us...the vision...together..they gave us...our first music videos

  • HEAVENLY * BLESS GOD NOW JD *

  • two great voices blended together!

  • They were both at the peak of their careers and though John's slid some and Olivia was on the brink of superstardom(Grease) it is wonderful to see them here. I saw this special and hard to believe it has been 36 years!

  • I simply love this song - they don't make them like this any more - makes my heart cry!!!!! At 12 years old I was madly in love with this man!!!!

  • I simply love this song - they don't make them like this any more - makes my heart cry!!!!!

  • I wish they had made an album together.

  • This was truly reality TV!

  • Lovely Olivia.

  • Back in my adolescence [I am now in my obsolescence] I thought Olivia was the second most beautiful woman in the world. [after a local girl who I never could win] Maybe Jaclyn Smith [Charlies Angels] or "Wonder Woman" Lynda Carter were tied for 3rd. Of course there still were Connie Chung,Sally Field,Sandy Duncan.......and of what boy didn't want Joyce DeWitt on 3s company more than the blonde? Or Mary Ann on Gillagans Island?

  • Oh yes jeffchandler1962, I agree. This was the definitive era of Golden Pop as we know it, and as you can notice here the dawn of play-backing to an existing backing track, also known as faking it. This goes for Barry and C&T. Carpenters, although sickly, are a different story.

  • Two great voices. And Olivia was such a hottie.

  • Wow I came across this yesterday and its so lovely it freaks me out! I wish we had shows Like this now....

  • jeffchandler1962 - Amen to that !

  • Yore the biggest AHole so you gatta know.@bigjim10011

  • @bigjim10011 Its not my business, why is it your? Perhaps you lack a little thing called A LIFE.

  • JESUS saves...

    Hope he knew JESUS, Amen...

Maybe we that are saved will see him again....

  • @JKKillerB That would be nice to look forward to, but I believe he was a follower of Buddism (sp), which is very sad. So unless he was born again late in life, we won't get to see him.

  • @tommylord How do you know you are right and he was wron. Maybe if you weren't so closed minded, you could accept that all religions intertwine. All good souls go to heaven regardless of their LABEL.

  • @tommylord How do you know you are right and he was wrong. Maybe if you weren't so closed minded, you could accept that all religions intertwine. All good souls go to heaven regardless of their LABEL.

  • @jollymon31 I never said anything about myself in that post.

Romans. 3:10 As the scriptures say: "There is no one who is righteous, no, not one"

Romans. 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory God.

John. 14:6 Jesus answered him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me."

Romans. 3:28 For we conclude that a person is put right with God only through faith, and not by works.

  • @tommylord True, But how ould we know what was in his heart at the moment of death, Was he invincably ignorant? who's to know. but the point is in God's mercy he could have given him a chance at moment of death to choose the only way and that is Jesus Christ. But that is between God and John Denver. I feel he chose Jesus and he will be there. What surprizes there will be in Heaven as to who's there and the real shocker being that who isn't!!!! need to take our own inventory not someone else's

  • no, this is Gene simmons from KISS singing here. I think it was taped in the early 80's when they removed the makeup.

  • @mizbooboo2u

Yeah, Gene's first solohit.. Still a classic.

  • this ain't gene simmons singing here. Its paul stanley from KISS who is singing. Paul has a better voice

  • Love how Olivia Newton-john and Gene simmons from KISS sing this song so perfect together here. :)

  • I remember seeing this special. Thank you so much for posting! Great stuff!

  • no specials now ! jus gutless network moguls putting on junk, for fuk knows what reason !

  • What a beautiful song...Such good memories.

  • I saw John Denver in concert in Chicago and he did this song, not with Olivia (I think Starland Vocal Band was there), but the whole audience sang all the harmonies with him... he was blown away, at times he would just stop and listen... far out...lol Miss him a lot...

  • verynice song of him i like

  • They sing so beautiful together. I didn't realize they did this song..This is amazing. Loved it..

  • John and Olivia - What a perfect combination.

  • I TOLD you it was Christmas 1975 for this 1976 hit. Are you incapable of correcting yourself? Are you ashamed or what? I'll give you 72 hours. Please admit your guilt and correct this error.

  • This is why I love my Bar Chord system so much!. John play's "Fly Away" (Key of G: 1G-4C-5D-6m-Em) and I can't see much of what his hands are doing. I know, I know everybody wants to look at Olivia. O.K. I'll give the camera man that. And you could by the sheet music. Yea I get that! :)

  • not enough volume

  • But "Fly Away" didn't exist in 1974. Please, I beg of you, don't sabotage our precious history and correct this error immediately. The single was climbing the charts during the taping of this 1975 special, and the single peaked at #13 on January 24, 1976.

  • the Wright Brother sang it as they flew their first plane around the entire world

  • From the CD notes i had Fly Away as released on July 4, 1974.

  • @leit420 Sorry dude-CD notes are wrong.I had an old hit parade encyclopedia published in 1980,which chronicled the top ten hits of every month since the Top 40 started and it definitely was 1975.It was from Windsong, which came out that year.Coupled with the sales of his 2 other albums of the same year,An Evening With & Rocky Mountain Christmas,Denver was clocked as THE biggest record seller in the world that year.

  • Get a grip, that's 35+ years ago and who cares. The song is beautiful that's all we really need to know!

  • 2 great voices even better together.

  • Why dont they show this Christmas Special in 2009????? so beautiful

  • Simply sublime!! Rest in peace John.

  • So beautiful.

  • They both have/had such beautiful voices. God Bless John Denver.

  • Beautiful collaboration! Whatever happened to this kind of music?

  • @seachordmusic It required talent, not much of that left, just noise now...

  • Amen

  • @seachordmusic

    money over talent nowadays unfortunately

  • @seachordmusic Disco

  • Lovely song!

  • Nicely restored version of this performance at:

    /watch?v=nLuRxZikJ5A

  • GREAT SONG ! SO PEACFULL AND PRISTINE

  • Hello.

This is how the world says goodbye to John Denver. They are allowed to be as sentimental as they wish.

Mr/Ms perky, please open your heart :-)

  • cperky250 is a moron, there are no words to describe such a lowlife scumbag...

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I remember watching this show back then. I still get goose-bumps. Outstanding performance by both of them.

  • its kind or ironic that i c skulls on his shirt..? take a close look

  • You see what you want to see. They are actually sunbursts, as in 'Sunshine on my shoulder'.

  • Yea I would say that sunbursts are more like it.

  • I agree. Mr. Ryan, he may have had a death wish, or whatever you want to call it. A lot iof geniuses wonder what's on the "other side" and they don't mind when they "break on through." (Thanks for posting this: I wish I heard this song on the radio instead of the droll heartbreak music they play.

  • Anybody know what date in Dec. this show aired? Just curiuos I was born on Dec. 18th of that year

  • My parents probably made me watch this when I was little and I wanted to run away from the tv...but now I'm watching on youtube...lol.

  • Olivia's and John's voices are PERFECT together.now this is music! <3<3

  • aqui la famosa es olivia newton jonh y con que descaro junta una estrella con un musica de poca monta que enchile en el festival lo apabuller a denver .....saludos olivia newton jonh

  • Primero aprende a escribir, medio se te entiende el veneno que destila

  • I did not know Olivia did backup vocals for anybody. this is a beautiful song. this is my second fav. although first fav for her and John Denver. my main fav is Take a Chance with her and John Travolta. I wonder did she sing with Karen Carpenter?

  • Karen and Olivia never sang together formaly, but they were very good friends.I wish they did record something together. That would have been awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • well, not really backup, more counterpoint...like Simon and Garfunkel on Scarborough Fair

  • 1974 if i"m right, i remember watching it the show put on the higest rating for the year on abc. He was such a big hit at the time and oeople wanted to hear his music

  • i think it ws on or about that date..this is where he sang the song he wrote for his son"merry christmas little zachary" for the 1st time...beautiful

  • this show wason the air again at a later date and its tv ratings were higher than the first time they show, it. just shows how popular he was at the time. it a shame they don"t make music like this anymore

  • @bcats60 Yup.1975.Over 60 million people watched it,which was a record at the time.I'm amazed how a star of Denver's magnitude just fell off the radar & nobody knows this stuff.I wonder if Jerry Weintraub had stayed his manager things would have been different.

  • You're a moron. Did Mommy say it was ok to play with her internet thingy?

  • Olivia Newton John......... I love her.

  • ~Olivia was beautiful and still beautiful!~

  • Great song. Great duet. Reminds me of my single digit years.

  • Too bad they didn't really sing together. Good as this song is, its only a tease.

  • lol -- im so lame -- i love this song and video so much. Remember in the Sydney Australia concert when John yelled "OLIVIA"...

  • Just GREAT!!!

  • Olivia is so beautiful

  • good song, but the audio is horrible

  • Agreed!

  • 1976 midnight

  • I really miss the days when people like Barry Manilow, John Denver, Captain & Tenille and the Carpenters had specials. They really were specials

  • Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. I used to enjoy Val Doonican's show. It was a time when there was a gentle, romantic & homely side to the life we lived. These days, sadly, it's all about celebrity, talentless exhibitionist individuals and how nasty we can speak to one another. It's a real shame.

  • @jeffchandler1962 , I really thank the Lord above for allowing me to live when I have. I experienced things that I didn't know later in life would mean so much.

  • @jeffchandler1962 Yes, Specials and Variety shows all together! Today there are few variety shows on TV period! They seem to have gone with Saturday Morning Cartoons! I am sick of Reality Shows and FOX! Someone come to the future and save us!

  • @jeffchandler1962

I agree..when I listen to their music, I appreciate the beauties of natural voice ,lyrics and melody

  • @jeffchandler1962 yea tell me bout it. i was born 1966

  • I can't hear the audio but the images - I'm sure we watched this when it originally aired because that camera move into the snowglobe is so memorable. Plus, my Sister was dating someone who was totally into playing every one of John's songs on his guitar.

  • People who get on here and post rude & filthy comments should be ashamed - sincerely and totally ashamed of themselves. Neckrofeelattack or w/e your name is, you are a sick and twisted person. These people only want to get a rise out of people, so we shouldn't even give them the satisfaction..

  • what an irony!!!

  • I loved to get sad and depressed over nothing in my early teens till my mid fourties. It is nice in a short song, but not as a life.

Why do I buy into this stuff, that aching is better than the fultillment?

  • The reality of human life on earth is that 'wanting' is nearly always better than actually 'having'. The actual having of something can often be a letdown as earthly possession rarely offer any fulfillment. Only peace with God offers true satisfaction. I don't think it is so wrong to be attracted to sad songs.

  • that was a nice comment unlike these others

  • I had this on 8 track. What a great performer

and great memories. RIP John...fly away to that special place in your heart...

  • Another great JD song.

  • it dosent play loud for me its the only of his.

  • My grandfather passed away in the living room of his house during this special on December 1,1974. I loved him so much.

  • Wow could these two harmonize. It's even more beautiful with Olivia in the background.

  • I love this song and even though it has no relevance to me right now as I am not flying anywhere except on a wonderful holiday soon, I just love it as it is so peaceful and happy!!!

like me at this moment and all my dreams are before me- in all ways- I cant wait for next year as this year has been very sad and not one I relish to have again

  • Do you happen to have the entire special?...or know if its already on here?

  • Two artists very dear to my heart. Whenever I would be feeling sad I could put their music on (either of them) and in a few minutes my mood would lift. Got me through some tough times. When I heard John had died, I slipped into a deep, blue funk. Took me weeks to get out of it. Still love to play his music, but now it is a mixture of happy and sad. Really bothers me he went so young. There were many more songs to come from him. I pray to meet him soon in a much better world.

  • John and Olivia where to artists, that receive so much airplay, it was ad nauseum, I couldn't punch the radio button fast enough to change the station. When most cars on the road has radios with buttons you actually had to push. Only in the last few years, I could again enjoy their recordings

  • @westkan This is true,to a point.JD did suffer from a serious case of over-exposure.This was due to his manager,Jerry Weintraub.I'm listening to JW's audiobook bio now. It's fascinating. He discovered the unknown JD in a club singing for $70 a night, his idea was to sell him as an established star thru' saturation coverage,so u couldn't avoid him.He put up huge billboards promoting him.He got him massive airplay via a big radio station tour..Got him on tv.It worked like hell but bkfired later on.

  • hi im Garry from norway, im 22 years old and this music means much for me=) god bles and RIP john.

  • Awesome--just great :-)

  • John

You are still missed so much all these years on!

    I sentiment the previous message.

    You are a beautiful man

Rest in Peace and God be with You

    Chris

  • ..that was such a beautiful thing to say...

  • John I cannot handle this no more. RIP. You are a beautiful man!!

  • His music was so unique and enchanting. I'm only 19 years old..I just exposed myself to John's music when I was a freshmen in high school, I bought his Definitive Greatest Hits when I was w/ my mom @ the Sam's Club one sunny day I never will forget that day. John is like my best friend, I get lost in his music and it takes me to a far away place in my mind...he will always be my favorite, simply magical :D

  • rebelheart1989, you are blessed.

  • Thank you for those kind words, they really do mean alot to me :D God Bless!

  • Props to you! You pretty much covered it in your comment, but you're not alone. One poster (age 42) commented on "Sunshine" that his 12 year old daughter has that song in her iPod. Other young people have exclaimed that his music touches them in way that today's music absolutely does not or cannot. And they're right. His music transcends human age, the much older and much younger listen to it equally, and that's exactly how he intended it. I too get lost in his music, and it's very meditative.

  • Thank you! His music transcends genre and really stands the test of time. Like I said I bought that CD just because it had "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and I didn't know any of the other songs. I had no idea what I held in my hands!! haha

  • You're welcome! I assume the CD you're referring to is the Greatest Hits, and if so you're going to find it's addictive. People have reported that it stays in their CD players for a long time. I still listen to it to this day, and started owning it on vinyl. DO check out the other JD videos, and immerse yourself in his musical magic. You'll find out what us "older" folks have known for all these years...just how incredible that guy truly was, and truly still is.

  • You're my new best friend! Haha yeah it was the Definitive Greatest Hits..which was followed by 16 Biggest Hits..which was followed by the 1st greatest hits where on the cover he's like holding his hat and laughing lol. Yeah I love him! What I really love is like on a rainy saturday afternoon w/ nothing to do and nowhere I have to be just lay on my bed in the dark and listen to JD and as Kristofferson said "hear the whisper of the raindrops..." haha I love it.
