I'm disappointed in Bill. This didn't require a snappy comeback. Just a simple explanation of what comedy is: "it doesn't matter what the subject of the joke is, as long as it is funny". Then challenge Hitchens to come up with something funny to say on the fly.

Thankfully he usually acknowledges when he's got bad material to work with, as I'm pretty certain he doesn't write all his own stuff. Personally I'd prefer an audience that reserves it's applause or scorn, and gives credit where it's due, even if the speaker is a "Righty". A good point is a good point, no matter WHO says it.

Exactly, the cigar comment is clear I don't see how it was confusing, and there was no doubting that Bush was a moron...but Hitchens was right: people I know back in High School would laugh at any "Bush is stupid" joke...even though they themselves knew less about politics than a rock.
