There was nothing wrong with the "O-ring seals", there was nothing wrong with the solid boosters. The Challenger was destroyed as a result of a leak in the external fuel tank. A crack developed between the oxygen and hydrogen fuel tanks, hydrogen, and probably oxygen, leaked out, ran back along the outside of the external tank almost to the end, where it ignited. The flame propagated forward until it reached the crack causing a tremendous explosion which destroyed the Challenger.
