  • The government and public are ignoring the real hazard, poorly trained 4-wheelers and those not caring or paying attention. So when will we in the US get the protection from bad car drivers. Fact 33.000+ die in car accident every year.

  • I think the reason why European trucks have side gaurds is because there aren't very many railroad crossings in Europe. They are everywhere in the US. So, you put those side guards on trucks to protect motorists and now you have a shit ton of semi-trucks getting smashed to shit by trains because the trailors are getting stuck on the tracks.

  • I find it interesting that if a truck rear-ends a car, the truck is at fault. And if a car rear-ends a truck, the truck is still at fault. It would be nice and 1000’s would be saved if car drivers took responsibility for their own actions, stop blaming others and pay attention to the road.

  • Happened to me once, the truck just changed lanes right on top of us without looking. The side guards saved our lives.

    God is everyone such a fucking expert around here, accidents happen and sometimes people run into parts of trucks that are just dangerous in the wrong situation. It's a shit load better to prevent those deaths by sticking on some panels or bumpers despite what some limp dick conservatives whine about regulation.

  • This is another video done by somebody that knows little about the subject. Those side panels are for better airflow. They may also deflect a glancing impact from something that is lightweight, but not a straight impact from a heavier vehicle.

    They also reduce ground clearance to the point that trailers will contact the ground and roadway in many areas. The roads here are not designed for these trailer skirts.

    If the cars would watch better, there would be no need for things like that.

  • They are called DOT bumbers. They should be installed on the side as well. One of the most dangerous things a trucker can do is do a U-Turn. When a truck performs a U-turn, cars have a difficult time even seeing the truck in the dark.

  • The bumpers are called DOT bumpers. It is not a good idea for a Truck Driver to do a U-Turn. That is when most cars go under the side of a trailer. Especially at night. At night, the side of the trailer is almost impossible to see. Many trucking companies do not allow their drivers to perform a U-turn and if they do they could be fired. If a U-Turn is required, call the cops so they can stop traffic. Calling the cops will prevent a death and the driver from going to prison.

  • Rear bars make sense as it is a small increase in weight for the trailer and reduces the higher speed 'rear' crashes from being as severe. Side bars are probably not going to make the same impact but cost a great deal in more weight.

    It is just a question of whether the consumer wants to foot the cost in higher prices in goods and services. Any one up for price increases in tough times???

I have driven semi somewhat and can't tell you how many times a four wheeler put me in a position off getting myself killed or killing someone else or them killing their family because they were "impatient" or didn't think turn signals mean any thing. On one of these occasions I almost stopped in the middle of a two lane highway to walk back to some tourists and ream them a new whole. Let's redirect a little to locomotive transportation, what do we make the train industry change at every and all crossings because they hit a stalled car or just some idiot sitting on the tracks because they weren't paying attention to traffic and get trapped as a train comes though or the next idiot who thinks "I can beat the train"?   • How do you get underneath a semi trailer in the first place? They always try to blame car vs. truck accidents on the truck driver just because he has the advantage in a crash. But the truth is it's almost always the 4-wheeler's fault.

  • What the hell, this is ridiculous. Most of the time it's the person who is driving in the car, this has nothing to do with the Trucks or Drivers. Theirs no need for a "Safer Design" If people are watching the road. Why would someones car go under the rear side of a truck, 1 reason people aren't concentrating there talking on there phones or looking at themselves in the mirror. If they people (The drivers in the car) paid attention there wouldn't be accident's like this.

  • Here's an idea. How about teaching the people in cars how to drive and aviod running under a truck, instead of blaming the trucking industry, for a lack of knowledge on the general public. But like always its always the trucks fault for the stupidity of everyone else.

  • I've seen the sort of "underbody guards" he's talking about on Japanese prime movers. They have them because of an even more stupid reason than someone not watching where he's going. It's to stop people DELIBERATELY lane changing by passing under the trailer. Before anyone accuses me of not knowing what I'm talking about, I AM an Australian truck driver, and see stupidity on the roads all the time.

  • First off, the proper name for your rear gaurds is ICC bumper. 2nd side gaurds will decrease the space and will high center Trailers on train tracks and a lot of driveways at the customers. There is reflective tape on the sides. A lot of the problems today is people text messaging on talking on their cell phones while driving. I myself witnessed a young girl holding her phone texting drive right thru a light and into the side of a van. She told the cops her car wouldnt stop.

  • Couldn't agree more. How many times do you have to tell politicians that it's pointless to legislate against stupidity? In the sort of territory I was driving in (Far north western Australia) having all this safety cage stuff would be a lot more trouble than it's worth, especially with two, three, and sometimes up to five trailers, each can be up to 40 feet long. Australian trucks usually have armoured bullbars to keep wildlife out of the grille, even more armour would be a cost to everyone

  • Uh, with side guards trucks would be centerhigh in a lot of places. A lot of trucks would be getting stuck on tracks. Side guards would be a bad idea.

  • hey BB how about addressing the real issue, and that is that people driving cars are stupid, if they would pay as much attention to their drving as they do their cell phones or whatever else they are doing alot of this would go away. it may be easier to blame the trucks the drivers and government, but it is not the solution, bottom line PEOPLE DRVING CARS NEED TO WAKE UP AND PAY MORE ATTENTION! granted some truckdrivers are no better, but not the entire problem

  • @mike198748 This does not work in practice. Even though you tell the public to "Wake up!", it doesn't make any difference. If you think it will, your simply naive. Accidents will happen no matter what, even Einstein could end up in this situation under the right conditions. Therefore, we need to protect people. In a similar manner, do you see guardrails on high terraces as ineffective, as people should know better than falling over the edge?

  • @Lucruza good point but now the trucks have to spend more money to add these gaurds under rates that date back to the sixties, and what about the added weight to the truck, hence less net weight. those of us who get payed by the ton rely on light weight trucks, and some trailers cannot be adapted to these side gaurds you speak of, i drive a log truck and there is noway you will get them on there because of the configuration and the fact that we piggy back our trailers when empty,
