I've considered devoting every second of my life towards understanding this grand masterpiece. Imagine, no work, no school, no people, no sleep, only fugue. Beautiful.
as for tempo, content dictates tempo. I think there is so much lost in frenetic readings of this work. The "Rudeness" another blogger referred to (although angst resonates more with me) is in the music itself. Then there is the factor that, as in orchestral versions of Verklaerte Nacht and Strauss Metamorphosen, the sheer thickness of the writing, multiplied by the additional players generally leads to some broader tempi.
3 minutes and change in, this becomes a CATASTROPHY! I do think the orchestral version can work, but making the score transparent or " illuminated" so we are always drawn to new and old points of interest is a hurculean score study for the conductor alone. In this case the entire orchestra has to do it too, IMHO
So I was waiting for the Germans to fuck up Beethoven...... Not.
Fucking incredible. My God. Amazing.
Too bad we couldn't package that in a bomb and drop it on Tehran. I'll bet they would all go blind.
Even if they didn't, they would never be the same again.
I'd like to see Allah explain THIS.

Can anyone tell me what that piece at the beginning is? I've heard it often, and it's nice....

With musical works like this, there should be a way to petition YouTube to waive the 10 minute limit per post.

@LDixon007 already done.

@Laudan08 - Since then I've discovered that the Y.T. limit is now 15 min!
~ But the grosse fuge normally runs 15:30 to 16:30 min., so no help there. ;'-(

B in German is Bb, (H is b natural); dur means major, so 'in Bb major'

all this serves to do is to muddy the sound of the fugue in what is already a very busy texture

True, sounds much too "nice" which IMO it isn't supposed to do.

actually it ends up sounding like one of those awful mendelssohn string symphonies, and is far to prettyfied they way these guys do it
chrish12345 3 years ago
