Joe Budden came out and made a comment about rapping against Method Man, and Raekwon got sensitive in a lyrical conflict that didn't concern him, and got his "boys" to fight Joe. Joe Budden wanted to rap against Method Man, Raekwon took it too far. I know they are close and they are cool, but it wasn't Rae's place to get involved. Slaughterhouse didn't get involved in this, so why should Wu?

Firstly, almost every record these guys have put out (individually and as a group) have been released on indie labels with almost no real promotion. To sell as many records as they already have without the backing power of a major label is an incredible accomplishment, especially with the state of the game and music getting pirated all the time. Now that the Slaughter is signed to Shady, I guarantee their next album will fly off the shelves.
@171TITO Secondly, ask any real hip-hop fan or artist and they'll tell you that selling records means almost nothing when it comes to the skills/credentials of an artist. Becoming successful on a level like Em or Jay is nearly impossible without all the right pieces in place (label, promotion, etc) which has very little to do with the artist himself. If your entire basis of an artist's worth is how many records he/she sells, then your opinion is, in and of itself, entirely worthless.

A basketball player needs to be able to dribble, jump, run, jog, and a bunch of other things, right? Or say a mixed martial artist. They need to be able to have a good stand up game, good ground game, good endurance, and good reflexes. There's alot of things a lyricist should be able to do to compete.

Wu has an in house producer (RZA) that puts down with the group on tracks. Becoming successful on a level like Em or Jay is nearly impossible without all the right pieces in place (label, promotion, etc) which has very little to do with the artist himself. If your entire basis of an artist's worth is how many records he/she sells, then your opinion is, in and of itself, entirely worthless.

@Iroh624 those are 'lyricists'. but they aren't as widely regarded as 'lyricists' as the individual members of slaughterhouse are. the artists you named are good. but if they were better than just 'good', more than 15% of the general population would have heard of all of them. which they haven't.

@Iroh624 Those are examples, not a definition. A lyricist is like a basketball player when it comes to rhymes. They have an entire spectrum of techniques they need to master or use to be lyricists. A basketball player needs to be able to dribble, jump, run, jog, and a bunch of other things, right? Or say a mixed martial artist. They need to be able to have a good stand up game, good ground game, good endurance, and good reflexes. There's alot of things a lyricist should be able to do to compete.

yes i do. im a lyricist. AND i work with lyricists on a daily basis. no one in wu tang (except for ghost & meth) is known as a lyricist. (a lyricist is a rapper who focuses on multis, quotability, etc). every member of slaughterhouse has been called a top tier lyricist.
