I remember part of the intro, it showed exciting crashes and action but in the actual show it was all horse racing and footy and horse racing and rugby and horse racing and then more horse racing. Still, I'd give anything to get those days back.
I can't watch this without smiling, how fun were the 70s. Great to see Jackie Pallo at the end of the clip, who was the other wrestler? I seem to remember there was one that called himself Catweazle....
@scurrie42 further to your comment that is not Jackie Pallo in the wrestling clip it is Beautiful Bobby Barnes from Maidstone. The other wrestler was infact catweazle who you mentioned, named after the tv character around at the same time. Sadly Catweazle is no longer with us.
Such fun Saturdays either this or grandstand or the movie matinees on bbc 2 (usually in black and white) no ps 3s or dvds so it was of to my mates to shoot the action men dressed in german uniforms and other games that involved social interaction. Great times
World of sport with ironically very little sport. Lots of horse racing followed by pantomime wrestling then the footy results. At least all the results came at the same time then. Does anyone remember the comentator getting tongue tied when he read Hamilton accedemicles 4 Forfar 4?
Great memories. Used to love the wrestling and its legendary commentator - Kent Walton - with his catchphrases "Welcome grapple-fans" and "Have a good week tiiiill next week". Classic telly!
@pjsage921 Never a great sport fan myself , but being such a good piece of music like this is somehow I can see where you are coming from on this one .
I agree with that , the opening looks so promising and then all you got was shite , horse racing and at your local bar everyone running next door to make a bet,
wrestling was a real sport back in those days, not like the fake american stuff we get today. Big Daddy once killed a man by smashing him in the ring.
The days when you could watch a wide range of sport, yes sport!! not the show buisiness money spinning tripe we have now. great days- great sportsmen and women.....
Actually called World Of Sport March, a classic if ever there was one along with the ORIGINAL Grandstand theme, these tunes stick in the memory forever , reminding us of the security of family life and a bygone era.
Kin ell the good old days. If I only knew then what I know now - those were magic days. The old man sitting there beating the crap outta the sofa screaming at big daddy to beat the shit outta giant haystacks, boring steve never missing a shot. I don't miss the sport - I woulda gone out more and played with the girls and invested some money and lived it up while it was still good - luv the theme tune for WOS.
Great days! They should never have cancelled this show. I remember many happy afternoons of my childhood watching the wrestling and waiting for your mum and dad to come back from shopping and hoping they bought you something nice.
I am not a fan of sport, but I have to admit, this brought back some memories, particularly of watching the wrestling at 4:00pm and Dickie Davies. Complete with Bob Colston (sp?) with the football result and doing the Littlewoods pools to see if we won anything... needless to say, we never did. Thank you ever so much for the memory, god I feel old *LOL*
@cosworth6nut Aaah Jacky Pallo, Mick McManu, am I making up Billy Two Rivers?, didn't he carry a tomahawk, surely in contravention of today's health and safety laws!
@Feverwitch Unfortunately, I am a little too young to remember Bill Two Rivers, though I do remember many others. It used to be a religion event on Saturday afternoon at 4pm for my Father to watch the Wrestling. He got so passionate about it, particularly when "Fit Finley" or "Giant Haystacks" would break the rules. Do you remember the "Royal Brothers" and "Vic Faulkner"? One thing my Father always used to say "I know they are acting, but it takes a lot to lift a bloke above your head".
@cosworth6nut Dads!, they don't make 'em like they used to! Mum could never watch, she took it all a bit too seriously. I certainly remember Vic Faulkner. Do remember the moves - half nelson, boston crab - brilliant! What do we get now of an afternoon?, blokes who should know better doing the paso doble. Mind you Ann Widdecombe would make up half of a very good tag team, if not all of it.
@Feverwitch You betcha. I have not watched Strictly this year, but have seen it in the past. In January, my wife and a number of her friends went to see it live in Liverpool and had a great time. Anyway, back to the wrestling - there was another show on S4C (Welsh Channel 4) and although we could not understand word 1, we did not need to - the show was called "Reslo" and had female wrestling - boy that was violent - far worse than the blokes.
Reminds me of a time when someone could streak at a FA cup quarter final and get shuffled off by a couple of coppers to a cheering and entertained crowd and laughing TV audience- rather than the streaker getting battered by security guards arrested by the police and prosecuted by the CPS because the FA's corporate sponsors and shareholders would demand nothing less.
@Apophisguard: Short and to the point. Money has raped sport and there is no enjoyment any more... take the 2010 World Cup. Can you remember one memorable game or even moment?
less complicated in those days, only one live football match a season, the FA Cup final on both channels! Why were 70s theme tunes so much better then they are now?
Brian Moore in there in amongst that feast of old footage, vivid reminders of Sunny Saturday afternoons in the late 70's sitting with my Granda howling with laughter at the wrestling while mum was at the shops with my Granny.
Was that Evel Knievel in there as well?? Loved the stock car racing with the old 50's American Cars.
heh-heh... Anyone remember Benny Hill doing a take on World Of Sport? He was Dickie Davies, and I remember when the cameras go back on him after a commericial break, he was cutting his toenails on the desk....
@goldyn12345 Personally? Jackie Pallo or Big Daddy. But the school hero was Kendo Nagasaki for weird reason that a teacher had the nickname 'Gindo' (no idea why) and the chant would go up... 'There's only one Gindo.... Gindo Nagasaki...'
We need a Saturday Sports programme back on mainstream TV.
Some people would argue that terrestrial TV is not being watched as much. That's because the best bits have been taken off. It's got nothing to do with changing times, the clever buggars at the 'top' have stuffed things up in the name of 'progress'.
@eclectica1 That's because the clip is actually taken from the 'World Of Sport' tribute that ITV did for the 50th Anniversary of ITV .... Hence the stuff that occured post-WoS, like the F1 racing and the Rugby Union World Cup, merely interwoven with the original World Of Sport title sequence.
Anyone going to post an 'origianal' sequence and maybe even an end credits bit ... There was a great one on here a few years ago, but has since been removed.
What killed WOS was its lack of commitment to serious sport. Apart from racing, it was dominated by wrestling, imported sports and darts. By the mid eighties it was looking very old fashioned and had to go.
@Glenn1967ful It's a shame as it introduced me to so many sports I wouldn't have seen otherwise. It was the first time I saw NFL and NBA, and it also introduced me to Aussie Rules which has become a lifelong passion of mine. Let's not forget the other stuff like motorbike jumping, surfing, cliff diving (when did you last see THAT on telly?), stock car racing and other brilliant sports like that.
It was more light hearted than Grandstand but the suits at LWT saw it as not serious enough and the move of racing to Channel 4 killed it off. I did enjoy WOS, though.
@JimShadyUK ... Spot on with American Football. World Of Sport was the only place to see it prior to Channel 4. The same goes for the excellent Aussie Rules ....

Great sport coverage. I was 8 when this was out, and I felt at home to listen to it. I rememeber the Footy and the Wrestling! Plus the Saturday pissed up peodophiles were honest back then. A man used to come in from the Pub and abuse his wife and kids with pride. I loved it, the money we won on the Saturday sports used to make up our Sunday. Fuck you all!!!! lol
It was of its time, but apart from the racing, there was very little serious sport on it and the show was panned out with wrestling, novelty sports and old clips. The sports establishment sneered at World of Sport and ITV decided to scrap it.
@Glenn1967ful Yeah I remember it used to be all wrestling. That format wouldn't be tolerated in this sport on demand time. I think it was just outdated by then. People weren't so sport obsessesd.
@ingravegreen would be nice to turn the clock back to the teleprinter,on the ball and kent walton and dickie davies game on. i think this is an era long gone i remember me and my dad going to watch barton town together in the late 70's and running home to catch the results !
Can anyone else remember the stunt man in the red costume, was he called The Human Fly ? I am sure that he did bizarre stunts like being strapped to the top of an airliner, and jumping a line of cars/trucks or bus's on a rocket powered bike and failing miserably..... Are there any other clips out there of this stunt genius !!!!!
Still brill clips of cliff diving from Acapulco what a good memory jolt.
What's wrong with the world. Bring back world of sport with dickie. I want to see championship log chopping from moosejaw! I also want to see final score with the teleprinter.....and I hate football!
@pharbi1 I know what you mean we live in a different age where everybody with any importance lies to you and everything seems so shallow. I know the current real world is pretty crap but i wish those in charge, on television, in parliament etc were honest about it
funny this guy does a montage including some bbc clips.happy memories mind i am in ulster now but anybody a clip of titles to central region sunday football programme before it became central and was still ATV? the programme was called ATV STAR SOCCER i believe .i was only a nipper im 37 now
@welshnick300365 I think the clue is in the name "World of Sport" unlike the BBC version"Football all afternoon" Ok if you like football which I don't
I accept that though I am not a huge footall fan either. My main gripe with WOS was that it did try to pass itself off as a top sports show when it wasn't. Grandstand wasn't much better thinking about it as it showed Rugby League in the mud every Saturday. For a sports fan I don't think anyone can complain about the coverage of ALL sports across cable channels if you are prepared to pay for it.
The wrestler you refer to is Bobby Barnes from maidstone but he wasnt a ballet dancer. There used to be a ballet dancer who was a wrestler though and his name was Rikki Starr
My old man would never miss the Wrestling for nothing Mick McManus, Mick McMichael, Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, and not forgetting Kendo Nagasaki...... great show i used to love the theme from the results service 4.40 pm glued to the Telly. Who won Who lost Who drew. Ahh Memories
I was, and still am, not into sports programmes, however, after looking back this was far more entertaining than watching it's straight faced rival on BBC1 (i.e Grandstand)
just watched this clip, brought back memories of happier times when you could rely on your bank, your MP was a pillar of the community and a man could be called dickie.
I too remember this show oh so well as always loved wrestling, now I too wrestle, I also have this music in MP3 format, anyone interested in re-living the theme tune, in its enriety, please message me your email address and its as good as sent. Many thanks for uploading this to here,Lance a.k.a. RedCloud2009
Don Jackson and the Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra, to give it the full name. It was an all-encompassing nom de guerre for Alan Moorhouse, Neil Richardson and Johnny Pearson.
A great show and Dickie presenting with his stripe in his hair lol. This version rules not like the later one that they had in the early 80s which was nowhere near as good a theme
We had a girl in our class, I won't mention her first name, but her surname was Davies and she had head lice, no prizes for guessing her nickname, bless her.
I remember the guy in red lycra He was strapped to the top of a jumbo jet and it took off! LMAO The human fly they called him and he did all manner of stunts on the World of sport "extra" slots High diving with Dana Kunze that was another EPIC!
I remember part of the intro, it showed exciting crashes and action but in the actual show it was all horse racing and footy and horse racing and rugby and horse racing and then more horse racing. Still, I'd give anything to get those days back.

Great memories of the 70s! Shows the variety of sports that were on tv in those days, unlike now.

@pharbi1 I know what you mean we live in a different age where everybody with any importance lies to you and everything seems so shallow. I know the current real world is pretty crap but i wish those in charge, on television, in parliament etc were honest about it

World of Sport was terrible. At that time the BBC had everything as shown by the fact that fishing is shown in the opening sequence !!!!

skysports shows fishing welshnick300365
nickthefox72 2 years ago
@welshnick300365 I think the clue is in the name "World of Sport" unlike the BBC version"Football all afternoon" Ok if you like football which I don't

@69waveydavey

Haven't seen this in years, it brings back happy memories of Saturday afternoons.
I remember the ballet dancing wrestler at the end, he was really funny, does anyone remember his name?
cmor5705 2 years ago 3
The wrestler you refer to is Bobby Barnes from maidstone but he wasnt a ballet dancer. There used to be a ballet dancer who was a wrestler though and his name was Rikki Starr
richtea1971 2 years ago
Thanks for that richtea.
Quite right, it must have been Ricky Starr I was thinking of................it was a long time ago.

I was, and still am, not into sports programmes, however, after looking back this was far more entertaining than watching it's straight faced rival on BBC1 (i.e Grandstand)

Don Jackson and the Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra, to give it the full name. It was an all-encompassing nom de guerre for Alan Moorhouse, Neil Richardson and Johnny Pearson.

Grandstand AND World of Sport were the two finest sports programmes ever to be shown on British television.
francilius 3 years ago 3
A great show and Dickie presenting with his stripe in his hair lol. This version rules not like the later one that they had in the early 80s which was nowhere near as good a theme
richtea1971 3 years ago
Absolutely agree with you, richtea1971.

We had a girl in our class, I won't mention her first name, but her surname was Davies and she had head lice, no prizes for guessing her nickname, bless her.

no wonder it ended if it was reduced to showing frisbee catching and the world sawing championships!
alanlovedog 3 years ago
Sky killed it, along with all quality tv. Now you pay Sky along with your tv license and get bombarded with adverts.
