my favorite bette davis movie ever [even above ' all about eve']...she was never more beautiful....the great music score....gladys cooper as that bitch of a mother...the cigarette scene...its even referenced in 'the history boys'.....love this movie so much!

Irene Dunne as Charlotte? No way. Steve really missed a few opportunities to pour on a gay take on this movie. First, Henried steps onto the screen as the romantic lead.. WTF? By the end of the movie, you're crying and pronouncing your undying love for this dork. And that insufferable BRAT of his nearly RUINS the movie. Why must Charotte, to justify her adulterous love, prove herself an even better mother to this unwanted pregnancy than the egg donor? No wonder BD didn't want to do a sequel.

Fabulous review, Steve - you did it full justice in the most entertaining way! BTW, Gladys Cooper was just short of 20 years older than Bette. How interesting to find out that WB bought this for Irene Dunne! (another FAVE actress). My favorite line in the movie? : "It's I, Tina..." And yeah, why AREN'T you on TCM? Keep 'em coming - as often as possible! - Please!
