  • This is the voice of Violetta as she lay dying of consumption, yearning for her lost love, Alfredo and remembering her life. This is the genius of Callas -- to be able to express this. When you hear this aria, there is Callas and Muzio...then all else.

  • sans comparaison. callas- violetta est magnifique !!! bravo !!!

  • oh my god!!!!

  • Roles of Crazyness are her battle field, she's damn good in singing Crazy characters

  • Grande Callas, immenso Verdi!

  • Callas had a voice pure clear and magic.Outstanding singer she was.No other person can imitate la Diva Callas.

  • @MsSandtime everything u can say about callas voce but surely not clear...magic but not pure clear...incredible and best singer but...

  • But why do we always have to compare the great singers? Of course Netrebko isn't la Callas, Netrebko is just Netrebko, she's worth better than a comparison!

Moreover we can't compare the two singers simply because it is not the same period, it is not the same voice, not the same personality, not the same recording quality, and unfortunately we don't have the video of Maria Callas

And in spite of that, they are two great artists, and both of them have brought something different to this music.

  • une voix inoubliable...Somptueuse Maria ...

  • I agree Mr Aviron!!! Maybe Tebaldi or Moffo can come close to Callas' perfection in this role. Yeah, Callas didn't have the perfect voice, but I challenge ANYONE to produce a better Violetta. She probably understood the role and character better than Verdi Hahaha

  • Maria Callas, " The Greatest Soprano Of All Time ", the BBC, 2007.

  • It is both sad and stupid that anyone is mindless enough to mention Netrebko in the same sentence as Callas. Callas is matchless in this role.

  • GREEK GODDESS ! you are THE BEST !

  • Callas takes the melodramatic roles of Verdi and through her art makes me believe in each character, each plot. She is the greatest dramatic singer who ever lived. No one else can compare

  • Whoever critiques M. Callas is ann ignorant about music and irrelevant with the Opera. Just shut the fuck up and listen! Amateurs...

  • Merci de partager cette vidéo fantastique!

  • i can understand all sides of comments the discussion if netrebko is better or not...i think its not to compare because every singer has his own feelings and own interpretation. what i like about netrebko is that she doesnt push the high notes and her voice is very clear. Callas sings it with more feeling but the high notes are very loud and sometimes she is a little bit out of tune....but her interpretation is also one of my faves. maybe its some kind of fasion to sing it this or that way

  • @81satura Netrebko will never be better than La Callas!! Never ever, ever.

  • perfecta, la gran diva del belle canto.

    cholgilla79

  • Absolutely another level. Cannot be even compared with such as Netrebko

  • @MrKasunka

    BRAVO!!!!

never in life will netrebko have the honor to be compared to her, to la divina.

  • This is perfect! She deserves applause!

  • I agree to you, charisob&camarade! this is perfect! she deserves applause!

  • oh I forgot.. the "imperfect" part is 1:47 :))

  • youtube.com/watch?v=l8Ce5-JrxaI

  • callas was a goddess

  • It has been my experience that most people who criticize are either not musicians and don't understand the human voice, or they are musicians, and I use the term loosely, who were mediocre at best. As a former musician, one can appreciate the imperfections of the voice and the color they add to the artistry of one who was, on her worst day, greater than most contemporary singers on their best day.

  • @TrevorDaniels

    This is very true comments.

I'm a lowly woodchopper, and I can tell you that there is no soprano that can, or ever will equal this. At LaScala they called her Souvramon......not human.

  • that is absolutely phenomenal and there are no imperfections in it at all. technically it is incredible, impeccable singing and very very difficult technique.

  • wow...the voice is so thick..but sooo vulnerable...just perfekt for this aria...and who said she couldn't do a piano????

  • Maria Callas...the one and the only . This is the Best interpretation of " La Traviata, Addio del passato " I have heard...original, unique and magnifique. Love it. Thanks so much for sharing it.

  • Too sad when people compare incomparable things. Gheorgiu is quite a good singer - but HOW it possible to mention her - speaking about Callas! Really - too sad.

  • What a sheeting içntrerpretationj Just Callas, as usual....

  • It`s such horrible misfortune - that we can`t SEE her Violetta!

  • @Rospaint

what a luck! she failed on stage and couldn't hit the high notes ... she only was average!

  • Just true

  • Just incredible!

  • Violeta is Callas...

  • many are idioitic opera critics, This Is Perfection! Period, She is a human who sings, not a god damn instrument, she needs to sound like a human, not a machine! The "imperfections" makes it superior and divine! Allows the pain, the emotion to come out, and that no music score can effectively do that.

    One of my favourite arias.

  • @charisaob great comment..........you got alot of reason

  • @charisaob quote: The "imperfections" makes it superior and divine!

I agree with this completely.. One of my absolute favorite "imperfections" is in

"E lucevan le stelle" performed by Mario del Monaco where he deliberately sings

"off Key" (so to speak) to make the performance more dramatic (not counting the ending of course which is superb :)

Here's the example (you've heard it naturally I'm just proving my/your point :)

  • @charisaob yeah cuz all these critics can sing and would do it so much better

  • @Supercalifragilis7 lol you are right, when i say critics, i mean many of the people here who judge no negative. Everyone has the right to like or dislike something, I dislike AC/DC for example, but i have the decency to admit they are very good musicians.

  • @charisaob thats a great point of view :)

  • @charisaob You are so brilliantly right. She absolutely nails the pathos and longing and loss in this aria. It is heart-breaking.

    Viva Callas!

  • Magia.... Callas come lei nessuna!!!

  • ok, i am Greek, a musician, opera lover,i am very well aware of Callas'value, but honestly now;this is a very bad interpretation of this aria, probably one of her worst performances.Shouldn't people feel shocked about this.Callas had many bad moments.Like most sopranos anyway.

  • @vernadakieleni les paparies elenitsa...

  • Oddio1 che brava!L'attacco! Ma vogliamo parlare dell'attacco! Così etereo! Meravigliosa!

  • may the gods save me and keep me from internet "experts"

  • So exquisite and moving...we dedicated this to my dad who passed away recently..he adored Maria

  • Truly the voice of a dying woman. What a mistress of vocal colour she was, even if i understand fully that some of you don't like her voice. She merits her high place in operatic history

  • She is the shining bright North Star. None other can attain her magnificence. Brava, Maria Callas! Brava!

  • Nobody can be better than a myth... Angela Gheorghiu is marvelous, but she's no better than Callas... She's just another great artist, and only time could show in prospective what her dimension will be... Callas is beyond everything.

  • Aah, Maria, the Queen... over and over... no one like her...

  • @ATHOSTROMBONI Sergiu is Romanian and as a patriot he says that Romanian singers are better. I am Romanian too, and probably he'll consider me less patriot since I find crazy to say that somebody sings better than Callas who basically reinvented the Opera and showed how it should be sung. How divine, and full of meaning in each single note sounds this Addio del Passato. Nobody will ever reach this perfection. And I envy those who were contemporary with her and could hear and see her live.

  • @AliciaDupres

    BULLSHIT ONLY BULLSHIT !!!!!!!!

Can no-one see that she is the worst screecher of all opera singers. She breathes on her chest and doesn't use her diaphragm. She really isn't as good as everybody thinks, she has the typical western opera voice rather than the mellow Italian voice. I'm surprised her voice didn't run out sooner because of the way she sings on her throat, you can just hear the strain. Anyone who has been taught correctly will tell you this.

  • @vahisern she's famous because she had a great publicity (like most americans singers)... so poeples just think she's amazing because of that... I personnaly don't like her singing that much...

  • @romain666137 I would go along with that. I place Erna Berger and quite a few above here. I do think the emotion in Callas's voice is great. Technically there are a lot better around. Callas is really only suited to composers (mainly Italian) ike Verdi. The German composers would not be for her.

Many Americans are over-rated. Leontyne Price is one of the few that is not.

  • @osinging what a silly comment -- "Americans are over-rated." Anyway, Callas for the bulk of her career was technically very, very polished -- not only in terms of difficult coloratura, but voice production and musicality. It is true that Callas's musicality (romantic) is most suited for Italian (esp bel canto) -- BUT, the rarefied "traditional" ways of singing German opera aren't always musical or even interesting.

  • @vahisern if this is in fact accurate, and any well-educated person will inevitably agree with you; why is it that a panel of professional opera critics for the BBC voted that maria callas is the greatest soprano of all time...? don't believe me...? PM me for a link... (that is unless you think that all of the panelists asked were ill-informed and you are somehow superior to all 21 of them...

  • @vahisern It's so great to " SPAM" you to death!! All Callas fans, spam this punk to death.

  • @ATHOSTROMBONI Grazie delle informazioni. Che intendi riferendoti alla completezza dell'interpretazione?

  • @shobarsch - Ciao Shobarsch.

  • @ATHOSTROMBONI Well maybe u are wright....but i rather listening to Gheorghiu!Or even better Eugenia Moldoveanu....search for her she was absolutly gorgeus....stupenda....cerca Eugenia Moldoveanu in addio del pasato....lei e molto brava

  • Superb...we played this for my dad's memorial after he died.....

  • Callas is the original and unique. Breathtaking..,,Splendide,absolutely amazing, Magnifique interprepation of the Traviata, Addio del passato .Thank you.

  • This is a prime recording! I have heard different performances of this aria by Callas and this one is divine! hearing her voice after her decline brings a tear to my eye. she was a remarkable diva.

  • I believe there's no one like Callas, she's unique. I'm a great fan of her.

  • @camarade2

your beliefs are REALLY correct. :]

    isn't she a super star?

  • Gaur (Irailak 16), zure heriotzaren hogei ta hamabigarren urtebetean, inoiz baino gehiago oroitzen zaitugu zure ahots paregabea maitatzen dugunok, Maria.

  • I really like this rendition. Thanx so much for sharing it!

  • @thecelticspirit

hm. as a psychotic and loving fan of Maria I feel inclined to tell you that your comment is beautiful and sweet. This, however, is no rendition. This is the way the music was written to sound, to technically, it's original. puro divina.
