By that logic, watching other sports would encourage us to be in great shape. I don't think we've seen a correlation between people being fit and people watching football, for example. I don't see any reason that there would be a correlation between people being fat and people watching eating sports. Am I wrong?

not necessarily. boxers and wrestlers gain weight to match their weight classes, sumo wrestlers gain weight to make it more difficult to push them around. and some of the eaters do lose weight by working out and gaining muscles (ex. kobyashi)
