Modern societies are viewed by many as materially successful, but as social failures. In more unequal societies, there is more status competition and you sacrifice your home life for consumerism. We have to have an idea of where society should be going, what kind of economy we are trying to get to. We will then get from maximizing material standards in competition with each other, to a society that focuses on improving the quality of social relations and reducing all the other social problems.
