The judge is NOT being a coward. It's the most basic of all court room safety essentials for the judge to retreat to chambers when there is a physical disruption. If they dont retreat to chambers on their own, a bailiff will tell them to retreat. Otherwise, the judge is an open target for any other nuts in the courtroom while bailiffs are occupied with quelling the disruption.
