I don't understand why everyone argues about whether Melbourne or Sydney is better. People from either viewpoint probably haven't lived outside of either. Living in the city is hard when you've grown up so far away from the crowdedness and traffic.
No city in the world can come close to this city when it comes to being absolutely boring. So average, so isolated, so below the standard of a world class city. It's is a country town that has grown out of proportion. Nothing to see, nothing to do, nowhere to go. Unless you have a large number of relatives and friends to keep you company. Even then, everyone is bored. To make it perfect, there a large number of redneck racist australians await you to throw upon you the misery of their own lives.

Housing has stretched to far away from the city and housing development is about to be ceased in the next couple of years because it has gone to far.
People traveling from work from very outer suburbs live to far away from their workplace so freeways and train lines have been built make transport easier but traffic is usually dense most of the time.

@ashleybrient You can take that a step futher and say melbourne has 5 of the lagest 6 companies in australia (NAB,ANZ,Telstra,RIO and BHP) (By market capitalisation). However it sucks for international companies. Most choose to base in sydney, but thats changing.

i wouldn't say that! i have looked in to many companies based in MELBOURNE and SYDNEY! however, since Melbourne was a city, it has always had Australia's largest companies, Telstra, ANZ, NAB, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton were never based in Sydney,
Melbourne has more of the larger companies and Sydney has more off the none larger companies,
Because of that, Melbourne has a larger budget and economy than Sydney! it's even listed under the Commonwealth Government.

the Victoria State budget is around 34 billion more! but i can say this, if companies do transfer jobs, and there business out of Sydney, to Melbourne or another state, there going to find it hard to expansion there city or even there growth!

Boeing the airline maker, has there HQ based in Melbourne, they have a few plants in Melbourne and 1 plants in Sydney, not long ago they said they will be closing there Sydney plant and transferring all 350 jobs from the Sydney plant to the Melbourne plant, which means Melbourne make more jobs and Sydney losers more jobs,
Melbourne has 3 airline companies based here, 2 international airlines and 1 national airline,

You know something about growth, they need to know how to control it, Melbourne has many plans and investments for that, one thing i like a lot if the new public bike system which is being rolled out around Melbourne by May 31, 2010, with 50 bike stations, 600 bikes and 24 hour access,
This project will mean that Melbourne will have a much larger growth again, at the moment, Melbourne has the largest growth in Australia, Melbourne has had larger growth than Sydney since 2006!

Melbourne has lot's of high rise, but New York has lot's more! however, Melbourne does have more than Sydney, and LA, Melbourne took over Sydney last year in the amount of office space, Melbourne also has much more development underway, have you seen Victoria Harbour, Waterfront City and Docklands??

You got my vote on that, 100 times YES! Sydney is really shit, i could name a number of reasons why i hate Sydney, 1, because they always put Melbourne down, and they think there better, they try and compete which doesn't work, because Melbourne is overtaking Sydney! in 2008, Melbourne took over as fashion capital of Australia, in late 2009, Melbourne took over from Sydney in the amount of office space, the size of Melbourne is bigger than Sydney!

Melbourne was also rated as the Sports capital of the world, Sydney has never been, they are trying to take over it, but it's not going to happen! Melbourne has lot's more stadiums, Melbourne also has the world's largest tram network, Sydney don't even have any trams! Melbourne also has the largest shopping centre in Australia (Chadstone), and the largest high rise tower in Australia at 95 levels!

Sydney rains more than Melbourne, also, the desalination plant will only be used until the dams are full and then the desalination plant will be turned off, but reserved!

well it looks bigger but it aint our city's boundary is all he way to penrith in the west which is near 60 kms from CBD, campbelltown in the south-west which is 58 kms from CBD, palm beach, 41 km north of CBD and waterfall which is 38 km south of CBD
