She sounds wonderful!!! Ah,The good old days-when singers were actually talented and didn't have sound effects or have to lip sinc to perform!! Love you Lesley & Laura Nyro, the best live singers out there. RIP Laura Nyro--I miss you.
Now all these stupid girls all like 'Squee!! Guess who brought me here..? heehehe' and now this video is ruined. Guess who brought ME here? Myself. I'm so proud.
@tinkerbellys Too bad you have such a low level of frustration, to let "stupid" girls have such power over your emotions and feelings. You better have that looked at. Sounds like someone soon hiding in the bushes (all by yourself, so proud,) Pete Reeves Altoona, PA
@shutdafup You are thinking of the reissue of this song. Mercury reissued some of her hits as "two-sided"records. The original Mercury issue of You Don't Own Me (December 1963) had Run Bobby, Run as the B side.
I bought this hit record when I was a child. I remember my father saying I have good taste. Much later, when Lesley Gore hosted the Gay rights show "In The Life" and after went public about being a Lesbian...I was even more proud of her.
No i DO love the message that relationships shouldn't be abusive and as if one person owns the other, but it can apply the same way to women who think they own men. So it's not just a feminist thing. I'm not saying that everyone thought it was but I've seen comments on this that just consist of "This is GREAT for ALL of the WOMEN who have BOYFRIENDS that THINK THEY OWN THEM!!!!". I love Lesley's music and I think she is speaking for both men and women when she sings this beautiful composition.
Don't tell me what to do.. I like to lick pussy just like you guys do. And I'll lick all the pussy I want to, so go fuck yourselves. I love the message, but not the bullshit of it, meaning that love is what makes it all work. Fuck her!
Thanks sooo much for this!!! It never gets old! Even though it may fall on deaf ears even in this day and age, (sad but true) I appreciate this great video!
What a DOLL. What POISE for an 18-year-old! This is the epitome of stardom: I'm watching this young woman sing, I know little about her personally, and yet I'm thoroughly entranced by her. This performance is magnificent.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Wow! What a great live performance of this song. Lesley gave a great concert in the park in Parsippany NJ about 4 years ago, a terrific mix of her new and old.
I love this song!!! I'm 38 years old so this was before my time but am so thankful to come from a family that loves music, so I grew up hearing this. And I'm not sure why, but this morning I woke up with this song in my head so now, I just had to hear it. And I get the chills everytime I hear it! Especially the part "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO...DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO SAY...", GOD I love that part. Great song, sometimes I wish I was a teenager in this era...
Gosh, I love this song and only Lesley Gore can do it right! I have her greatest hits and enjoy listening to them every now and then. This was from the T.A.M.I. concert ....which was really good. I also liked James Brown and the Beach Boys; the Stones did a good job as well singing one of my favorites "Time is on my Side."
im 16 and i just found this girl. she is INCREDIBLE. you can tell shes very confident and classy, she is just beautiful and a great singer. im obsessed. and nobody knows what im singing cause its from the 60s ! :P
@xKAYLIExBABYYx Good for you. They reason why nobody knows is cause your peers are probably 16 as well and have never heard good music. Try "The Crystals" Kissed me is a good one. Enjoy
Hello everyone, thanks for watching! Glad to see the chauvinistic comments are dying down a bit- we're evolving! And in large part we're evolving thanks to courageous people like Lesley Gore. I literally still get chills everytime I watch this.
Yes thanks so much for posting this. I also always get chills when I listen to it! I think it's one of the most inspiring and truly iconic performances on here. Towards the end it really becomes a sort of sixties anthem, the way she generalizes the initial possessive boyfriend thing into something much bigger - asserting her capacity for self determination in the face of any threat to it! For me in it's passion and commitment it's the equal of Janis Joplin at Monterey!
La version de este tema que hizo Luz Eliana en Chile fue muy buena, notable. Chlilean singer cover whose name is " Luz Eliana" of this song known as " no soy tuya" , was really good
Yes, this song was way ahead of it's time when it came out in 1963. Hard to believe that there are still some who think they "own" women. Just the other day I was watching Divorce Court. The plaintiff (a guy) make statements like: I work 89 hours a week, when I come home I expect her to have dinner on the table; I do own her, she's supposed to do all those things for me; she's supposed to keep her self in shape. The judge just laughed at him.
@stevemichaels2020 I have an ex-husband the same way...I heard him say all of that and more during the brief 4 year union, lol...he found out he didn't own me, but I owned his ass in court :=)
@stevemichaels2020 Relationships are very much quid pro quo and have unwritten expectation clauses that might include - I work 89 hours per week and you stay fit and have my dinner on the table. I don't see anything wrong with that, but I do see something wrong with claiming ownership over a person.
@stevemichaels2020 Nobody "owns" anyone, but there are expectations from each person in a relationship that should be give and take for the relationship to work. If only one person is benefiting then it ain't gonna work.
@stevemichaels2020 The song wasn't ahead of its time at all. America was and is BEHIND its time. Judges should have laughed at that crap back in 1963 too.
I admit to not finding a lot of Top40 music very deep, but once in a while a song came out that actually said something that stuck or stung or "meant it." This song has a message that is still important, it was sung well, and it's been popular since the 1960s: So I guess that makes it part of America's Classical Music. I needed to hear it tonight. peace
I was ten years old when I first heard this song. What first came to my mind is here is a girl who isn't afraid to speak her mind! That is why this song was such a ground-breaker! She sings with so much emotion, one can't help falling in love with her. This is a timeless song, that will last a lifetime for those who first heard it. Thank you Leslie Gore for bringing us a Classic we will always cherish
This has 1 million plus views because it is a transcendental experience to see/hear it. The lighting is terrific, the stage setting is awesome 1960s decor, but most of all it's about LESLEY...and how a teenager could go on a stage and sing like that!!!!!!! How amazing that a young teen could put on that kind of mind blowing performance!!! amazing to say the least.
love to watch this....good memories, christmases and the like with get togethers and music that was stuck in our minds forever....lots of sing songs xxx
It's funny cuz I have had women tell me that our relationship diddn't work because I wasnt 'Assertive' enough' with them and in my mind I was thinking exactly what leslie gore was thinking, that you are your own person who dosn't need to be pushed around, and I thought you loved me just the way I am?
@neckface1980 They might be mistaking your passive way as "uncaring" or aloof? It's a possibility...heck, what an I say, we ladies are impossible to figure out ; =)
this video floors me every time I watch it, you can feel what kind of class she had just from her posture and vocals, it is soo attractive it is ridiculous.
Proof that you don't have to make a fool of yourself, like some modern pop singers do, in order to grab an audience's attention. All you have to do is bring emotion and a nurtured, vocal talent to the stage. Thanks Ms. Gore.
@diddymuck No, Lesley never wore a wig in the 60s. She has stated in the past she used lots and lots of hair spray on her hair. Perhaps the "piercing stare" was intentional to get her point across....you don't own me!
the message of this song (you don't act as if the other person belongs to you) has STILL not been received. although the first verse talks specifically about "when someone is dating", it applies to one's entire life.
Even when one is married, If the other person is unfaithful, you just have a decision to make: do I want to continue this relationship? If not, get a divorce. If you are hurt, sue for emotional distress or whatever term is used in your country or state.

Betty Friedan 1963, Lesley Gore 1964, Glora Steinam 1969. She was there and she made a difference.

Yeah ! Lots of people have covered this but she's THE one who owns it !!
For the message - really necessary to know that you can say "You don't own me".
The 'don't think don't speak don't feel' dictates you get are all control - so if it doesn't change - move on!

@diddymuck The camera lense had vasoline smeared on it to give it an effect. Lesley does not look like a guy in drag!
stevemichaels2020 5 months ago 5
@stevemichaels2020 elongated chin, high forehead, unmoving hair (perhaps a wig), no makeup and a piercing stare.
diddymuck 5 months ago
@diddymuck No, Lesley never wore a wig in the 60s. She has stated in the past she used lots and lots of hair spray on her hair. Perhaps the "piercing stare" was intentional to get her point across....you don't own me!

this song should be dedicated to everyone...don't let anyone get in the way of anything you like to do!! ( must be positive though )
tanszeqi1999 5 months ago 7
the message of this song (you don't act as if the other person belongs to you) has STILL not been received. although the first verse talks specifically about "when someone is dating", it applies to one's entire life.
Even when one is married, If the other person is unfaithful, you just have a decision to make: do I want to continue this relationship? If not, get a divorce. If you are hurt, sue for emotional distress or whatever term is used in your country or state.
and then, MOVE ON!!!
