@rinia1864 Can the beautiful picture of the Yamato and Musashi at 1:56 be purchased on line? Being a battleship junkie, I would love to have it in my collection. Also the ship blueprints at the beginning of the video are an excellent touch.
Yamato was an amazing ship, but she was already outdated by the time of the pear Harbor attack. I've seen a lot of folks here mentioning how she wasn't used properly, etc but the fact is that the war in the Pacific was where the carrier took over as the key to victory at sea ( which is what made Midway a turning point for America when so many Japanese carriers were lost ), while the Atlantic had the last great battles between gunships ( like the hunt for the Bismarck ).
@cyril1917 she actually got refited with 162 0.98 inch aa guns and 24 5 inch dual purpose guns so she was up to date remember it took 300 planes at least (not known how many exactly ) 11 torpedoes and 8 1000 pulnd bombs and the musashi took17 1000 poulnd bombs and 19 torpedoes
The only pitiful thing about the utter destruction of the IJN is way it was sacrificed by high command. Either way Japan was logistically unable to continue operations. No fuel, no food, a pitiful unnecessary waste of human life. If they were so hell bent on dying for the cause, it should have been high command that killed themselves.
At first, when the US Navy heard that the Yamato was coming, some officers considered sending out US battleships to face her, making it one last battle for the blackshoe sailors. But then reason took over - if our people did that, we were going to be hurt, and badly. They sent in aircraft instead. There is somthing spiritual about the Yamato.
i have nothing against the US but they had no right to attack this amasing ship
i watched a documentary the other day and just hours before the pearl harbour attack an american destroyer fired at a japanise mini-sub with no reason
the america-japan pacific war should never have happend
it started through the carelessness of a US destroyer crew
@warriorxp111 Excuse me? "Just hours before the pearl harbour attack" (your words) implicitly recognizes that the Japanese naval air attack had been planned months before and already initiated when the USS Ward found the minisub in a restricted defense zone. The planes were fully armed, aloft and enroute, making the Ward-sub encounter irrelevant. (Btw, the November 1941 "diplomatic mission" of two Japanese envoys to Washington was a deceipt intended to obscure the forthcoming attack.)
@warriorxp111 My info comes from sources such as Walter Lord's "Day of Infamy" and "U.S. Destroyer Operations in World War II." Did recently see a (Discovery Channel?) documentary on the fate of the five midgets ... don't recall it placed the Ward action outside the defense zone. I'll be in Hawaii next week and would gladly check further. Your sources? Do you recall the Japanese base reconnoitered or a more specific date?
and i also do alot of reasearch on the IJN and alot of the info i get clearly states that the midget subs were not in american territory and were not posing a threat
and the japanese base that the recon plane was spotted over was the same base that the recon plane was spotted over was the same base that yamato was mainly built in (not sure of name il find out)
Yes, the battleships were magnificent, all of them. But it wasn't about ships and guns and steel - it was about the courage, honor, and utter dedication to duty of the MEN, who rode them, particularly the Yamato's last sortee. Even their enemies were filled with respect. Nobody, nowhere ever, thought of the Japanese as cowards!!
The Yamatos were indeed magnificent battleships. However, battleships were simply out of place in WWII. Without adequate air cover, battleships - no matter how fearsomely built - proved to be little more than huge armored targets for the air armadas that ruled over the Pacific. Yamato was sunk by carrier aircraft after sinking only two destroyers and a little escort carrier, and Musashi was similarly destroyed without her ever firing a shot at another enemy vessel.
Yep, you are right ... however in the future when we develop weapon systems that simply can annihilate and shot things from hundreds of miles á la the railgun etc. Huge Battleships will probably get a revival and this accounts especially in space if we ever will travel there with modern space ships ;). The BBs will be the rulers of the galaxy and with railguns on our planet especially if those guns have a range of +150 miles and have the added advantage of being very accurate ;).
Carriers will be obsolete by then especially when sooner or later new defensive systems will be invented for warships that protect them from multiple air raids ;). The Phalanx system would be one which is also in use if I am not mistaken.
@Treetop64 Actually, sir, the reason why Yamato and Musashi have such a limited combat record was HOW they were used. For all intents and purposes, they were used as rear echelon command ships, not front line combat ships. Even though Yamato was part of the fleet that hit Midway, she was about 480 kilometers behind Nagumo's carriers, and thus saw no combat. The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the first time the ships had seen any kind of combat action.
In simple words this ship was the BIGGEST war made weapons platform ever constructed!
NO plane, NO tank and NO warship (even up to todays standard) that was build with big guns in mind (so no carriers) was EVER bigger ... it was simply the biggest War-made ship that could destroy anything in its wake and that was within range of the 40 kms of its mainguns including entire land devisions and that with near impunity - so basically it was not only the supreme ruler of the sea but also the land!
The Yamato had more firepower then entire Tiger tank battalions and its armour was nearly impenetrable in certain sections for the standards of the WWII and this ship even if its radar fire control system for its mainguns was not the best then the allied counterparts could with its spotter planes if it would have ever discovered ships like the Bismark/Hood or the like with them eat them alive cause it simply had MORE armour and MORE firepower!
Well I am also not from Japan but rather from Europe ;).
I also need to say that the Yamato is really a powerhouse. It stands for proud and the might of the old times when BBs where the supreme rulers of the oceans on this planet.
The Yamato is not only the biggest battleship or should I say rather super Battleship built but its also THE biggest weapons platform ever constructed from a human.
I agree even if I am not japanese. I 'm Romanian but I respect Jaoan nation from all my heart. Almost all I have is Made in Japan , my car , my electronics....all...and Yamato deserve this recognition and tribute. Congratulations to you...all..
@ImperialGuard322nd Yamato & Musashi were not inferior, these mighty warships were not used properly by the IJN. Kurita became too reactionary instead of bringing the fight to USN. They would receive a bloody nose and retreat. Look at the small task force Taffy 3 and how such small USN "tin cans" were able to make Yamato turn tail and run. Kurita was "saving" Center Force he simply did not have the mettle to stay and fight. The small USN boats attacked aggressively and won a strategical battle.
April 7 is the western civil calendar date of the sinking of IJN Yamato. I think is a note of respect due. From what I understand is one of the greatest loss of shipboard life in history in a single event
bigger than any other battleship by a wide margin and with awesome firepower but there was a price , she was the slowest of the new battleships and renderred obsolete by carriers.

As much as i hate to admitt it but the Yamato Class Battleships are better battleship the the Iowas Class Battleships. I mean in April 7, 1945 IJN Yamaro took nine torpedos and five bomb hits before she went to the bottom of the sea, the Yamato can take enormous amount of punishment, she might not have good fire control but I don't think any other battleship can asorb so much punishment the the IJN Yamato. I have to give the IJN Yamato credit were credit is due.
I never thought less about the Japanese nor the German despite the war crimes that took place during and before WWII like the Nanking atrocities and the Nazi Holocaust. Every country all most has it's dark past. America became the country it is today because we took territories away from the natives and Mexicans and killed many of there men woman and children.
