I love both of their voices they both do a fantastic job singing this song, but for me their voices don't really blend all that well. But there is no denying the chemistry. All in all a magnificent performance

Its funny that these 2 come together for this. Larry Kert was Tony in the original broadway cast of West Side Story. Judy Kuhn's very first broadway show was as the second female, Bella in Rags, which featured Larry Kert as the lead female's long lost husband. That chemistry shows in this performance. A fine performance, even though Larry was close to 60 at this time and lived only another 5 years or so.
Amazing duet of this West Side Story beautiful song! Larry Kert always had a glorious voice! Judy Kuhn is a Broadway leading lady! In the 1980's she performed at the White House for President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan!
He had a voice like Alfred Drake - not the same voice, but an equally unmistakable. voice that was exactly perfect for the parts he played on Broadway. Like Alfred Drake as Curly, Larry Kert created Tony for the audience.
I must live in a musical wasteland... I never heard of either of them; but I find this to be an outstanding performance and one on par with the original done back in the oldyen tymes... Great music but it just doesn't make it past the Appalachian Mountains into the hinterlands.... cheers
larry kert was the original tony on broadway in west side story hahah. and judy kuhn is best known for her role in les mis as cosette and she also has done some disney voices such as pochahantas..which i think i just spelled completely wrong ! ahah
In the late 1980's at an AIDS benefit concert at the Village Gate in New York Larry performed Tonight with another singer. I openly wept with joy and hope during a stunning perfmormance of his signature song, This performance with Judy Kuhn at the White House is also powerful, lovely and perfect.
OH wow. I saw this on TV when I was 7 years old. It was my first exposure to musical theatre. Thank heaven for PBS, back before youtube!! Thanks for putting this up.
@angelhannahalo Really? I thought it was the other way round, she really out-sang him. But maybe it's just me because she's a hero of mine and I can pick her out.
Wow! I gather from other comments that Larry Kert is not in his youngest years in this clip, but - what a voice! Such a youthful tone and good control. A tiny bit strained at the highest notes, but then again - who isn't? Lovely!
This is absolutely delightful! Judy has a lovely voice. And Larry Kert has always been one of my favorite singers in the musical theatre genre. His voice is beautiful!!! Together, they create magic!
This reminds me of when I saw her in 1983 at a summer stock theater in NH and she was playing Maria in West Side Story. I watched every performance of both West Side Story and Carousel (in which she played Julie Jordan). She sounds just the same. That summer was one of the best of my life and inspired me to be a singer as well. I've followed her career ever since. I am so happy she's been so successful.
OMG!!! Look at Larry Kert!!! This had to be near the end of his life, and he still sounds great! I would have loved to hear them sing the whole song together.
Judy has the same clothes and hairstyle so I think this was done at the White House in 88 where she also sang "I Dreamed A Dream" which is here as well.
what a range she has

@muscle25ftl That is soooo true!!! They are even much better than the couple in the movie!!!
TheFuamus 7 months ago
@TheFuamus Yes, well, Larry Kert was the original. Sad, though, that they get almost a minute in before the audience realize what the song is.
