the musicianship is amazing...i just wish sound engineers had put some perspex baffling around mr chamber's drumkit..there's so much volume from his kit it's bleeding threw everything or at least turn zakir's tabla's...so they match there's some balance to the mix.
3 grandmasters together, wow. zakir and john together is always magic. there will always be people who dont get this but never mind them, their loss. these people who were there were blessed to witness this. i saw john in belgrade couple of years ago, and i still shiver ocassionaly :-)
Johns' music is always a prized adventure up and down the fretboard;he proves that jazz can have a precise direction and give a punch something session converts seem to not have most of the time.Thank you John for not boring the crap out of everyone like so many do at jazz festival's.
HAHAHAHAHA!!! the audience, with their frustrated ears, trying to dance to it, . they don't have a clue, they think everything must be in 4/4. 'how weird, why can't i dance to this?' this is some sort of 5/8. but with the shuffle(triplets) dennis is doing it might be an odd compound signature. compound 14/16(triplet sixteen) or 7/8(triplet 8ths).
@juanbarros88 actually the drummer is in 5/4. He resolves the tension every 5 beats with the hi-hat. It might have sounded like some sort of tuplet but thats only because of the way he's treating the inner beats (for lack of better words)
what's w/ ppl n note values? it's in 5/8 unless the quarter notes were fast. those 5 notes u count as quarters I count as 8ths. in a sense we're both right. I suggest compound because he's using a lot of triplets most kinda ghostish. in compound time, it would be in 7/8. I tap my feet 3 times, in 1,3 and 5 and SKIP back to one. so it sort of 3/4 with an eight note less. now in compound you would have 123 for the first tap, 456 for the 2nd tap, 7 on the 3rd tap and SKIP back to 1st tap
now you dont usually say that jazz is in compound time, one rather says triplet feeling, but you know that compound time means triplets, right... wait, i now suppose the inner beats are what i call ghost notes. yeah it sounds more like tuplet with triplet inner notes. sorry i know you're not wrong, we just count differently. sorry for trying to teach you what you already know.
Legendary ! John McLaughlin was put on this earth to inspire every other guitar player on the planet. Look at him ... How old is John McLaughlin now ? in his late 60's ???!! I agree with Joe Szilagy .. ask ANY 'metal monster' guitar playig sweep picking guru to play like Johny Mc. WITHOUT all that distortion to cover up their mistakes. Very few people who can touch this guy or even come close to him.- DiMeola , DeLucia - pretty much the only 'worthy' ... Nicely done Johny Mc.
@ChrisHaspeck ur forgetting allan holdsworth, which in my opinion, is wayy beyond what john does, not compositionally, but no one can play a solo like holdsworth if u check his stuff out
Ask one of the metal shredder, sweep king guys to play something like this, (especially without the use of tons of distortion, etc. to cover up the flubs)- good luck!!
truly awesome . JM's phrasing/melody is the result of a life of improvisation. If you practice long enough one day the bird will come and sit on your shoulder and you will be an instrument , the music will play you . This is a total joy to behold. There arnt many great improvisers left becuase music has become so commercial !! yet again money talks and spoils all it touches, but thankfuly JM is still alive an kicking !
Ha, all those poor folks were expecting to be hearing some classic rock n' roll, im sure this is the point during the show when beers and snacks were purchased.
Actually he's got rid of amps many years ago because air companies had crashed too much equipment. Nowadays (maybe since 2007 or something) he uses Roland G20 synth through Apple Powerbook straight to PA.
Before that he used Sony M7 effects rack straight to PA.

Jeff Beck said that McLaughlin existed to piss off guitar players...or something like that...
I first ran across this guy when he was playing with Miles Davis in the late '60's, been a fan ever since...Wow!
I guarantee that all the guitarists in the audience didn't go to the concession stand during this set!
