I think it's an interesting point to say that Minor Threat musicians never went brutal against people who weren't straight edge, all these 'extreme sxe" just forgot the real message of respect behind this.
NailBombed is right. I've always felt that those relatively small number of "radical straight edgers" really give the rest of us a bad name. In fact, beating someone up for not thinking or acting the way you do totally goes against what straight edge is all about. I've always been straight, but my friends all drink and I really don't care. To each their own I say.
The singer is Ian McKaye, founder of Dischord Records, Fugazi, Egg Hunt, Embrace, Teen Idles ... One of the most influencial person in alternative music and post-hardcore music.
SXE is a personal decision. The movement is all well and good in some parts, but there is a very aggressive vocal minority who ostracise and set out to do damage to those are not SXE.... which is an abhorrent way to behave. I believe it's something you do for yourself... and let others decide what to do in their own lives instead of preaching to them. Give them the basics, then let them decide... don't be a thug and try to beat it into them, either mentally or physically.
@rompmyg If you want to be technical the "original" version was the version Ian MacKaye played to Henry Rollins on a piano right after The Teen Idles broke up. This is the first version Minor Threat recorded and released. The only other non-live version released was on their first 7" that came out some months after this version had been released.

Why do you guys think it is funny to make fun of a band/song that deals with being straightedge? Idiots like you these days.

Is the singer mentally challenged? Or does he have a palsy or something? Not being mean its and honest question.
