This shows, why Falling To Infinity era was awesome for DT! If they've released the album with demo versions of these songs plus awesome underrated songs, like Raise The Knife and Speak To Me, people would aprecciate this album, as much, as Images & Words and Awake!
DT didn't have much freedom on this album. The record company demanded a more commercial release. That's gotta be the reason why this by far more powerful version (the great pressure coming from the drums alone knocks me off my chair!) was cut down. Thank God for official bootlegs and for the guys uploading them!
Why does so much of their best stuff never make it to final cut? CmE, WaYN?, TWiUtB, TLF ('91), any of them, heck all of 'em, had huge radio potential. This version of BMS, IMO, blows the fucking doors off the final version. A third tune, let's call it "You Nor Me" ;), combining "You Not Me" & "You Or Me" (I like parts from each that aren't in the other). Producer fucked up bigtime; but I bought FII in '97, still love it a lot. They just need me to be there making the decisions, that's all ;)
Pulling Hell's Kitchen out of the middle of this song was probably the best piece of executive meddling you could ever hope for. The same can not be said for what happened to the rest of the song.
totally! i mean, listen to the JM's bass tone during the "Hell's Kitchen" part! and JP's selective used of shred, epic riffs-a-plenty, exquisite control of tone and effect, building anticipation all over the place! this is DT at its best, and why it was not preferred boggles my fucking mind...
Out of all of the things that the label did to screw over DT for FII, this almost redeems it. Just think, if they hadn't requested the song be trimmed, we wouldn't have Hell's Kitchen...
I actually prefer the vocals on this version. This definitely has the more classic DT vibe to it, but at the same time, the majority of Hell's Kitchen, one of the most meditative songs in their history, feels odd in the middle of this song. I can definitely understand the edits. This one of the few songs I actually agree with the producers on.
@Hellotheres Yeah, AND Scenes From a Memory might not exist, since Metropolis Part 2 would be an instrumental on this album. Plus, now we have two versions of every song, since they released the demo version of this album. Everything happens for a reason :D
dt makes all thier songs on an album have re-occuring to different songs as this one connects to hell's kitchen in the very beginning just how lie has similiar riffs and keyboard parts in the song
How can you say you've heard the begining bit somewhere else, and not the entire instrumental section in the middle!.. it's like almost all of Hell's Kitchen!
Hm...I think it sound great, but the bridge between the instrumental part is pretty crappy. But sounds great,i think the record label had something to do with cutting this song. :P

A plug in my butt, a bra on my shoulder
A bead in my ass, the size of a boulder
You spray your load, onto my rack
And you ask me why my balls are blue
Pissing, moaning, losing all sense of boning
Fucking and sucking the pressure keeps on
Burning my hole, burning my hole

This almost makes me wish cuts happened more often... I'd love to hear more instrumentals built out of interlude riffs.

or it they'd just stayed the fuck out of the way, we'd have a double CD chock full of goodness that went into some 'Closet' >.<

Great upload! I think they got it right on the album, but this works well for me as a bit of curiosity.

Falling Into Infinity isn't actually that bad. but ultimately I'm glad Mike Portnoy told Atlantic to "stay the fuck out of our music"

Totally agree.
By the way, I believe the label was EastWest and not atlantic

Woah, This song is more powerful together than they were separate.
I wonder if they still had planned if the transition into Lines in the Sand was still planned at this point.
