He fell off a ladder and fell in a coma where he had the chance to see how everything would've turned out without him. He overheard something about a certain ms cooper which is why he ran to the airport because this could be marissa since she wouldn't have died if ryan wouldn't exist. So he decided to go there and if it really was marissa he would've stayed in coma volunteerly just to be with her :(

I love the song they used here, it really gives the scene a surreal feel.

I remember being on the edge of my seat when I first watched this, because I knew Mischa Barton wasn't coming back, so I didn't know what was going to happen when Ryan went looking for Marissa in the airport. It's so poignant how Ryan realizes that Marissa got to live three more years because of him, so he finally lets go of his guilt about her death.

So they go into this alternate world and in the alternate world all the characters are really different and Taylor hears a rumor that Marissa is still alive and flying home from Berkley. So she tells Ryan and he rushes to the airport cause he wants to see her but it turns out taylor was wrong it's not Marissa it's her sister kaitlin.
