Release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming.
As Martin Heimann writes in Science: Wetlands and permafrost soils, including the sub-sea permafrost under the Arctic Ocean, contain at least twice the amount of carbon that is currently in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Release of a sizable fraction of this carbon as carbon dioxide and/or methane would lead to warmer atmospheric temperatures, causing yet more methane to be released. It would thus create a positive feedback loop that amplifies global warming.

You'll notice in all the graphs and studies that show the ups and downs of the temp, that after every warming period, there is a VERY shard drop into the colder temps. I don't doubt that global warming is real at all. But I don't fear it. However, I DO fear the Ice Age that may follow. I'm sure I won't be here, but my children's children (etc) may have it VERY rough indeed.

After it is triggered, the cold cycle is sustained by resulting changes in greenhouse gas concentrations in a limited, positive feedback. Unfortunately, we have so dicked up the atmosphere that any triggering in the futures will likely have no effect on what happens, at least until the man-made changes stop and the Earth can clean up after us.
You clearly haven't read any of the scientific reports that went to the IPCC- solar input was (and is) studied intensively as a factor in current climate. The conclusion is that what is happening in the last 30 years is not due to the sun.

My dad knows someone that works for British Antartic Survey in Antartica and the news coverage about ice melting is well exagerated. The ice melts every summer down there but it all freezes up again in their winter. Global warming is a big con thought up by polititians to get more money out of us and exagerated by the media and scientists they pay lots of money to.

Humans evolved 2-3 million years ago. Since then there have been dozens of ice ages. The ice only affects the temperate regions- humans just moved south out the way. No extra evolution needed.
Its pretty well understood now that Ice ages are started and ended by the Milankovitch cycles- from the point we are at now on the cycle there won't be another Ice Age due for 50,000 years. Look this stuff up if you don't believe me...
If you look at the genetic history of our species it funnels down to just a few individuals, not too far back. I'm thinking the last ice age went kinda hard our species. in this upcoming Ice age there will be a lot more competition for the now more meager resources. There are only a little over 6 Billion of us. I'm guessing we'll starve, then kill ourselves with fighting over resources, and then we'll starve again. Hopefully we'll learn some foresight, and avoid some death and carnage.

The green house effect is smaller factor than the graphs of 100000 cycles. eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth's orbit cause 100000 year cooling periods, for far far colder than the CO2 phenomenon, and guess where the Earth as been for 10000 years? At the top of a very very high peak. I think Ice Age is coming. The real question is how much will CO2 postpone it and worsen its start.

Yeah the earth has been recovering from the coldest times in 10,000 years, it's not carbon dioxide that really effects our temperature, it's the sun. As the temperature rises, the CO2 rises also, the temperature depicts the CO2 levels not the other way around.

Well the only thing i can add to this, is that 20 - 30 years ago where i live (northwest england) Our winters contained days where we would have up to a 1ft of snow, every christmas was a white christmas. Snow drifts 6 - 10 ft high. Now we havnt had a white christmas in many years, 3-5 inches of snow on the ground maximum on maybe 4-5 days of the year. Usually in Feb/March/April. It has changed alot but i dont blame man for it.
for the past 200 years, the earths temperature has been increasing. It appears to be the planet recovering from the mini ice age...but at the same time...the temperatures have risen above the mediaeval warm period temperatures.

My summers have got colder (near north coast of France) we used to have two months july and august where temps were high 20's C every day and several days of 30 C. Every year the number of hot days is decreasing. Last year we had about 2 weeks max of hot days and only one day of 30 C. This winter we had 8 inches of snow the first big lot of snow for 20 years and we don't normally have any each winter! Man is definately not to blame.

Conmputer Models are only part of the picture. There is no other cause that can explain the temperature increases over the last 30 years. It's really not that hard to understand. The makeup of the atmosphere gives us our climate. Change the amount of CO2 gases in the atmosphere, change the climate. There is an abundance of evidence and an abundance of scientific understanding of the effects.

The cycles of SLIGHT climate change are very well known and documented. The present cooling cycle has nothing to do with C02 just as past cycles didn't. Look at the last 100 yrs its very obvious.
1910 to 1940 warming
1940 to 1970 cooling
1970 to 1998 warming
1998 to 2008 cooling
No correlation to C02 at all.

The short term trend its cooling (5 years or so), the longer term trend is warming. Is the cooling trend a blip that will be followed by further warming or have we reached the peak and begun a new long term phase of cooling? If some theories are correct we could be back to temperatures seen in the 1700s within 25yrs!

Yes - C02 is a greenhouse gas but its not a very good one and there very little of it in the atmosphere.
Present C02 is .038% of this 4% is man made - this makes only .00152%. It is just nowhere near enough to make any impact at all. Effects from this tiny amount cannot be measured.

The warming seems to be caused by dust blowing around and uncovering big patches of black basaltic rock that heat up in the day. Variations may also be caused by irregularities in the orbit of Mars. However the it corresponds exactly with models made almost 20 years ago which are based on increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere. I never said that the earth's climate can't change on its own. Happened before, of course at the time all of Canada was covered with a glacier 3 miles thick which melted rapidly. Since there is no such glacier today I would worry more about the recent lack of sun spots, and the shift in the PDO.

Actually, according to the full history of the planet, 0 ice sheets is normal. We have been in an ice age for the past 2.5 million years, we are still in the ice age now becasue the Antartic and Artic ice sheets still exist. The ice age we are in now is at a low glacation point right now due to higher temperatures.

You'll notice in all the graphs and studies that show the ups and downs of the temp, that after every warming period, there is a VERY shard drop into the colder temps. I don't doubt that global warming is real at all. But I don't fear it. However, I DO fear the Ice Age that may follow. I'm sure I won't be here, but my children's children (etc) may have it VERY rough indeed.

The best scientific data suggest that the Ice Ages are triggered by a Milankovitch cycle trifecta, and the next such is 20-50,00 yrs away. After it is triggered, the cold cycle is sustained by resulting changes in greenhouse gas concentrations in a limited, positive feedback. Unfortunately, we have so dicked up the atmosphere that any triggering in the futures will likely have no effect on what happens, at least until the man-made changes stop and the Earth can clean up after us.

You clearly haven't read any of the scientific reports that went to the IPCC- solar input was (and is) studied intensively as a factor in current climate. The conclusion is that what is happening in the last 30 years is not due to the sun.
Please don't confuse the garbled crap that makes it onto TV with science. Journalists generally study literature and postmodernism at Uni- they are totally out of their depth in science and stuff it up more often than not. Read the science!

If you go there today, you can't even SEE the sea - because it is no where near the great cliffs. Why? Because it was a LOT warmer 2,500 years ago than it is today. My dad knows someone that works for British Antartic Survey in Antartica and the news coverage about ice melting is well exagerated. The ice melts every summer down there but it all freezes up again in their winter. Global warming is a big con thought up by polititians to get more money out of us and exagerated by the media and scientists they pay lots of money to.

Humans evolved 2-3 million years ago. Since then there have been dozens of ice ages. The ice only affects the temperate regions- humans just moved south out the way. No extra evolution needed.
Its pretty well understood now that Ice ages are started and ended by the Milankovitch cycles- from the point we are at now on the cycle there won't be another Ice Age due for 50,000 years. Look this stuff up if you don't believe me...

If you look at the genetic history of our species it funnels down to just a few individuals, not too far back. I'm thinking the last ice age went kinda hard our species. in this upcoming Ice age there will be a lot more competition for the now more meager resources. There are only a little over 6 Billion of us. I'm guessing we'll starve, then kill ourselves with fighting over resources, and then we'll starve again. Hopefully we'll learn some foresight, and avoid some death and carnage.

The green house effect is smaller factor than the graphs of 100000 cycles. eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth's orbit cause 100000 year cooling periods, for far far colder than the CO2 phenomenon, and guess where the Earth as been for 10000 years? At the top of a very very high peak. I think Ice Age is coming. The real question is how much will CO2 postpone it and worsen its start.

Yeah the earth has been recovering from the coldest times in 10,000 years, it's not carbon dioxide that really effects our temperature, it's the sun. As the temperature rises, the CO2 rises also, the temperature depicts the CO2 levels not the other way around.

Well the only thing i can add to this, is that 20 - 30 years ago where i live (northwest england) Our winters contained days where we would have up to a 1ft of snow, every christmas was a white christmas. Snow drifts 6 - 10 ft high. Now we havnt had a white christmas in many years, 3-5 inches of snow on the ground maximum on maybe 4-5 days of the year. Usually in Feb/March/April. It has changed alot but i dont blame man for it.

My summers have got colder (near north coast of France) we used to have two months july and august where temps were high 20's C every day and several days of 30 C. Every year the number of hot days is decreasing. Last year we had about 2 weeks max of hot days and only one day of 30 C. This winter we had 8 inches of snow the first big lot of snow for 20 years and we don't normally have any each winter! Man is definately not to blame.

That comment was two years ago. The data collected by satellites of precise global temperature measurements show that global warming is happening, and far faster than predicted. All polar ice will be gone by 2030. The link between global warming and man-made greenhouse gasses, particularly CO2, is undeniable.

To recover a WW2 bomber from the ice in Greenland they dug down 260' of ice. Where's the thinning? The '60's DYE-2 radar station is now subsumed in ice. 6 storeys tall and heightened four times.
They tried the NW passage 2 centuries ago and they still fail.
CO2 is not a man made greenhouse gas. It comes from ocean warming.

@ndrthrdr1 PIOMAS has become one of the last refuges of the climate scoundrels. They show current ice volume as 6,858 km^3.
The current area of ice is 9,483,000 km^2, which means that PIOMAS claims the average thickness of the ice is a very thin 0.72 metres.
By contrast, the US Navy shows that the average ice thickness is more than twice that thick.

Although the media's idea of global warming is vastly simplified (to the point at which it's very easy to find holes in it), it is correct. But the explanations are apparently too complicated for the media. They're not all that complicated even.

Conmputer Models are only part of the picture. There is no other cause that can explain the temperature increases over the last 30 years. It's really not that hard to understand. The makeup of the atmosphere gives us our climate. Change the amount of CO2 gases in the atmosphere, change the climate. There is an abundance of evidence and an abundance of scientific understanding of the effects.

Sorry but thats NOT correct.
The cycles of SLIGHT climate change are very well known and documented. The present cooling cycle has nothing to do with C02 just as past cycles didn't. Look at the last 100 yrs its very obvious.
1910 to 1940 warming
1940 to 1970 cooling
1970 to 1998 warming
1998 to 2008 cooling
No correlation to C02 at all.
Do your research - the science doesn't support AGW.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately the info out there is written by humans not the animals who were living in the past, so it's really hard to believe certain things. I'm not saying that there was no ice age or global warming for that matter..but I'm not sure if we are anywhere close to a reapeat.

i if you do some research you will find that the earth has warmed and cooled multiple times shortly after most of the dinosaurs died off the earth warmed so much that only a few species of animal could survive namely small rodents and a few assorted lizards they lived in an environment with only 10 percent oxygen for millions of years, we now live in a world where the oxygen levels peak out at about 30, but if the ice caps keep melting more methane less o2 more warming

The short term trend its cooling (5 years or so), the longer term trend is warming. Is the cooling trend a blip that will be followed by further warming or have we reached the peak and begun a new long term phase of cooling? If some theories are correct we could be back to temperatures seen in the 1700s within 25yrs!
Climate change is driven by natural cycles. Determining the drivers of these cycles it the next important step in predicting climate change. Suns activity & moon cycles maybe!

We all the earth changes and that are glacial and heat times. But that doesn't matter here. What matters is that we are destabilizing (sorry. I think word is bad written) the cycle and it is not as normal.

Earths climate will continue to behave just as it has for the 4.5 billion yrs - it will continue to change.

Yes I know it's very natural the changes, but with so much CO2 on the atmosphere, it has to change something.. That's what I think.
As I know CO2 makes the heat from the sun stay on the earth.

Although many 'believe' that C02 will have an effect temperature there is not one shred of evidence to support this hypothesis.
Yes - C02 is a greenhouse gas but its not a very good one and there very little of it in the atmosphere.
Present C02 is .038% of this 4% is man made - this makes only .00152%. It is just nowhere near enough to make any impact at all. Effects from this tiny amount cannot be measured.
AGW is no doubt a hoax designed to raise taxes.

Really thought it would be more Co2 on atmosphere than that. With so many cars around, it's a bit wierd.
Anyway has I've been seeing, the car is not a stress relief object. People just get mad driving it, because of everything. We should stop using cars anyway, and it would get much cheaper, even the taxes are higher.
And AGW, I don't think is a hoax designed to raise taxes, but a misenderstood (or not) of what is happening. As we ALL know, we don't know nothing about this.Only when it happens..

The theory that global warming is being caused by greenhouse gases has been around for almost 40 years. It has nothing to do with the global cooling theory which was briefly around and discarded 30 years ago. It has been verified again and again by thousands of climatologists and scientists. It is the only theory to have this kind of support in the scientific community.
The consensus is in.
Get over it.

As Earth (and all our planets) get warmer due to the suns activity and greenhouse gases (from the methane in the ice) trap in the heat, fresh water ice melts and dilutes the salty ocean water which regulates the planet like a radiator through the Gulf Stream bringing warm water to colder areas and bringing cold water back to warmer areas. Once the ocean salinity dilutes below a certain level it disrupts the Gulf stream and then "shit hits the fan". Read "The Coming Global Superstorm" book.

The changes of temperature found on Mars have only been observed on the South Pole. On Mars for a period of five years. The warming seems to be caused by dust blowing around and uncovering big patches of black basaltic rock that heat up in the day. Variations may also be caused by irregularities in the orbit of Mars. This is a weak, simplistic theory which doesn't correspond to measured sun radiation.
Models based on man-made emissions of greenhouse gases closely matched the observations.

I got your point. You just want to completely ignore the findings. The findings show that the earth is not going through a warming on its own that would correspond with the measurements. However the it corresponds exactly with models made almost 20 years ago which are based on increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere. I never said that the earth's climate can't change on its own. It just is not happening that way.

For one thing the US is still the biggest emitter of CO2 in the world. The UN is mostly on the same side as the US on most issues including the desire to decrease global warming. I am afraid that you are in the minority. Of course there have been times that the UN has not agreed with the US like when the US started a war in Iraq. Of course the majority of Americans agree with the UN on that. If there is anything to be afraid of it is Exxon's disinformation about GW and overpopulation.

Happened before, of course at the time all of Canada was covered with a glacier 3 miles thick which melted rapidly. Since there is no such glacier today I would worry more about the recent lack of sun spots, and the shift in the PDO.
