wrong bike for first try - heavy & powerful -- which is a dangerous combination. With some lightweight motorcycles (70..125cc) it would be perfect start, those will have plenty of power too but these are much more forgiving with first clutch exercises and much easier to balance.

release the clutch to the friction zone and hold it in that position. let the bike gain some speed, acelerate a little bit, unthrotling is also important after the movement starts so you don't shoot forward, and then release the clutch completely. start slow, and take your time. i also did the same thing when i was learning but the engine wouldn't die (it was a big torque engine) the bike would move slowly and jumping because of the low rpm

You should have given him the basic knowledge on how to start going. Tell any other beginners this. "Hold the clutch in, start it, have your hand on the acceleration handle, but dont give it gas. Slowing let the clutch out until you feel the bike beginning to engage (rolling by itself) then tell them to start give it a litle gas at the same pace they release the clutch. Just like driving a standard (manual) car.
