the funny thing is, they try to ban video games and stuff for violence, saying it "makes people do things" (bullshit)
and then they show this stuff.
NEWSFLASH!! there are no aliens to shoot around here, so no worries about that. also, people really DO shoot each other in war. so nothing new there.
Now you're feeding visions of domestic violence to people, which, assuming you are correct in your monkey see monkey do theory, would make this happen more.
I also think that the point here is that the "child" who started out hurting animals grew up- into the "man" you see here hurting his partner. The yelping must be a throwback o the man's chldhood when he would feel power and control after hurting a poor helplss puppy-now he feels that same power and control while hurting his poor helpless partner.
Actually, this ad isn't far off from some real-life domestic violence situations. Some abusers will attempt to control their victims by hurting or killing or threatening to hurt or kill the victims' beloved animals.
I cannot comment on the abilities of the RSPCA. But the statement 'humans are more important than animals' is hypocritical. It is this very attitude towards animals as being 'less important' that sanctions abuse in the first place. If those of us with experience cannot change our attitudes towards other living creatures, how can we expect anyone else to?
Abuse and violence toward any animal should be equally frowned upon - be they cat, dog or human.
oh yes and this advert is abominable... the rspca is a shameful organisation...its employees are (in general) ignorant, emotive, untrained people, in theory they are good, in practice they are anything but... :(
The rspca is a shameful organisation? OMG!! The people I work with ARE NOT ignorant, emotive and definitely not untrained. We are huge on educating the public about being respectful of animals (and in turn other humans) and about desexing to stop many more unwanted pets being born. I think you've had a bad experience, or are extremely uneducated yourself about what the rspca does. I think you should volunteer at the rspca for about a month - you'll have a clue then.
And omg, you are 21... I'm 41... live a bit of life before you disrespect an organisation you obviously have had little experience with. Also, you're in the UK... I don't know about the UK rspca, but it's very well respected here in Australia.
1) I worked for the RSPCA in the UK for 2 years during a college course and saw how the staff there had the best will, best hearts and yet the least training/knowledge of animals in the world.
2) I respect the fact that you are older and have had more life experience than me, however, on this issue I am more than qualified to critisise an organisation which has shown itself in such a poor light, at least in the UK.
3) Showing extreme violence to humans or to animals through the media may be effective in shocking people into thinking about abuse and cruelty, however this particular advert is so non-specific, and gives the impression that animal abuse is somehow just as wrong/bad as humans is wrong, in my opinion. It implies that humans and animals have the same moral value which in turn brings up many misguided perceptions of the value of human life.
4) While the RSPCA is well-meaning, and often useful in educating the public about pet care, veterinary treatment, and helping animals in cruelty cases, it is sadly flawed by a few unsound principles, and practices. (E.g. videos like this). PETA are similar.
5) This is just my personal opinion, which many will probably disagree with... :S...just that rather than disrespect for animals leading to disrespect for humans, people have lost their sense of the worth of humans and human dignity. Wide spread euthanasia, abortion, violence in films and on TV, racial hatred being stirred up in people, all contribute to this. You may not agree with me, but it is an idea.
5EB1987 , on point nr5: being Humane stretches to everything - from interhuman relationships to the way we interact with nonhuman animals. As I said before, I think you will understand this better after reading on subject. Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and Speciecism are all connected - you cannot consider yourself an ethical Human Being if you are against voiolence towards women but not against other types of violence...
My point in no.5 is just that maybe the loss of a sense of value for an animal's dignity and life, stems from a lack of respect for a human person's dignity and life. I am not claiming to be an epert on this, just putting an idea out there. Also, on the matter of the "are humans more important/have more value than animals" question, in most western cultures there is a clearly in-built perception of human life having more value than animal.
(CONT) We do not batery farm humans, we do not keep humans as entertaining companions, animals do not have the civil rights that humans do. This largely stems from the Christian moral stand that humans have eternal souls and free will and that animals do not have souls and have instinct rather than free will.
we used to have slaves. It says in the bible we are allowed to have slaves. Also Exodus21:7-8 teaches fathers how to sell their daughters as slaves.... Not so long ago women were seen as property, as men's posession... Child labor was legal up until the 19th century! Not so long ago being racist was OK. Christianity is definitely NOT the reason why we explore animals and not humans, the reason is that we can STILL get away with exploring animals - we can't get away with exploring humans anymore.
(Afterthought: Ultimately, in moral matters, humans MUST have the same outlook on life, if they are not often going to have to merely settle with agreeing to disagree. If you believe in a God, or many, then moral issues revolve around that; if you don't then moral stances will necessarily change.
well.. we're Always going to have, at some point to agree to disagree with everybody else, that's why we are unique and not sheep. But I agree that there should be a generalized moral ground - not because some book says so, but because we are intelligent and compassionate beings. However, there will always be disagreements on what that moral ground should be and we could go on about it forever. Bottom line, it's my firm believe that 'sentience' is a valid reason to preserve life.
However, if a large proportion on the population accept the evolution hypothesis, and believe that humans are animals without a higher value than theor fellow animals, why do animals not have civil rights, etc? Yes I have gone off on a bit of a tangent, however, the point I am making is that if ppl genuinely believe that animals are of the same value as humans, then not just their attitude towards abuse of them needs to change but their whole outlook on how humans/animals relate.
The common ground between defending Humans and nonhuman animals is that both should have the right to be left alone to just Be. To exist without being harmed or explored, be it male, female, black, white or furry. No-one is claiming animals are AS rational as Humans, but they are -FACT- sentient beings, which means they can feel pain, joy, anxiety, jealousy (this has all been PROVEN), which should be reason enough to respect them fully. Obviously, they are easy targets.....
1) Christianity is not the reason animals are exploited, it is the reason many ppl see them as worth less than humans.
2) Agreed, both animals and humans deserve to both live in peace and dignity. I'm just raising the idea that ppl are contradictory in their idea of how much peace and dignity animals should have in various aspects of their lives.
3) Emotion and rational thought are not mutually exclusive, the two together help make us human. One without the other is counter-productive.
Adverts like this are too emotive, and not rational enough, in my opinion. Current attitdues towards animal and human abuse is too contradictory in thw West; you cannot claim to percieve animals and humans as equals and yet only put the action in where convenient. I personally am a Christian, and will hit the roof if I see any animal being abused, as they are creatures who deserve respect and care, however, I believe it is more sad to see a woman/man being abused, for the reason I gave above.
can i just point out that on the previous point you said that you feel sadder for watching a woman being battered than an animal (thus you feel bigger empathy towards women/humans than animals) yet here you say that this add is too emotive.... which is a personal contradiction. So, you act on emotion or rationality? because religion is also emotive - you do not Know God exists, you Feel God exists...
Some women won't leave violent men because they can't take the dog with them, and if they do leave, their lovely partners will threaten to kill the animal to make them come back or abuse the animal to control the woman. UK refuges and animal charities have only just woken up to this. Yes some women abuse animals and/or men, and only some men are violent but the bulk of perpetrators against men, women, children or animals are men. The ad reflects some peoples'lives - shocking but true
rhinogirl67-i dissagree with you,i dont think this is a brilliant advert,i think its disgusting,i hate it.Any lady who has suffered voilence from her partner/husband etc, will not be thinking about animal abuse when they watch this, they will be thinking about thier own abuse they have suffered. Also this advert gives out the message that only men are more likely to abuse animals, which is not true,i know of women who have bin cruel to thier pets when thier husbands havent bin,i think its a bad advt
I like animals but I cannot understand how grown adults dedicate their time to helping them when there are millions of children in the world that need help their? People who work helping only animals are freaks and should be re educated on morals & ethics.
DO NOT DONATE TO OR SUPPORT ANIMAL CHARITIES, GIVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY TO CHILDREN WHO NEED IT
Yay!! thnx for a sensible comment :) i love animals and work with them, but the type of person who believes that animals have more rights than humans or who overlook the horrific conditions many humans are in all over the world...my mind boggles at how they manage such a feat of the imagination... oh and btw the person who marked ur comment as spam is a moron :)
i dont know hey, im turn between the fact that its a good way to put the message across..but its not something you want to come across while watching tv... keep up the commercials though..i hate animal violence..someone who has mistreated an animal will want to think twice before crossing my path...
I work at the rspca and I think this is a brilliant add. I see on an all too regular basis the animals that come in that have suffered horrible abuse. People all too often sit in their comfortable little living rooms and stick their heads in the sand and pretend its not happening. But IT IS!! It's good to have an add where it makes you stop what your doing and look. Sometimes its the only way to actually get the message across.
and have you ever been on the recieving end of domestic violence...? I am a vet nurse who see cruelty cases all the time, and i am also someone who watched my mum get beaten up by my dad for 5 years..... this ad is irrational, ignorant and desensitizing, all unfortunately very common occurrances in animal wlfare/animal rights circles :( i love animals, but humans are more important im afraid.
Yes, I HAVE been on the receiving end of domestic abuse. But the whole point of the add is that a huge number of people that violently abuse other people started on animals! If we can breat the cycle of people abusing animals, then there's a good chance many people won't abuse other people!! Good message all around, I reckon.
5EB1987 you're seeing things in a distorted manner. It's not a question of hierarchy - "one is More important than the other" - it's a question of one being connected to the other. I very honestly suggest a trip to your national library in search of studies of this kind (which is what I am doing at the moment for my thesis on how animal cruelty and human cruelty are directly related, as proven by several UK and USA studies on battered women, abused children and reports on pet torture) x
Seen this add the first time the other night with some friends. Everyone in the room stopped what they where doing and watched it. I know they are trying to get the point across but this isn't the way to do it! We where more upset about the add, then the fact behind it! The last add, with the wombat, was much better!
"That's horrible. I don't want to see that on the TV....I watch TV to relax, darn it!"
*
I agree. I'm much less likely to give to the RSPCA knowing that my donation will be used to produce violent depictions of cruelty who's ulterior purpose is to shame me for being a man.
These shockingly violent and forever gender skewed ads are really a form of gender harassment directed against men.
men=perp woman=vic but I know better from personal experience. So screw your fudged stats. I've been there!
Violence at any level is totally unacceptable. Inflicted on the defenseless; is utterly despicable and just plain cowardice. This ad is such a powerful reminder that all of us can and must take action against these ball-less bastards. This is the most profound community ad on violence I have ever encountered! I am definitely moved to act.
This video is the most powerful message I have ever seen against domestic violence, it was extremely hard to watch but sadly it is necessary that we don't turn away from the harsh reality and fact that people who hurt people often hurt animals too, we need to speak up for the defenceless every step of the way. Thank you for helping to educate and inform and I hope this film may also help to prevent violence and protect those living through it.
I think this video says it all - for years and years we have been fighting to show the connection between domestic abuse and animal cruelty - It is about time someone - somewhere took the step to put together such an advertising campaign - well done ! I hope that other countries will follow this good example !
I have to say, while I understand the need for awareness of animal cruelty and the sad state of inadequate penalties... I feel this actually negates the message against domestic violence. Perhaps if we raised awareness for the need for tougher penalties for ALL acts of cruelty and violence, we might not be undoing so much hard work in other areas. Ask a woman who has lived what this ad depicts if she feels that it passes a positive message for her. I don't think it does.
the ad was set up to aware the public of the harsh reality. sentencing needs to be changed because people who commit these inhumane acts are getting under a year inprisonment. look up BLEATS - Brisbane Lawyers Educating and Advocating Tougher Sentencing. sign their petition to help create tougher sentences for animal cruelty.

That's horrible. I don't want to see that on the TV any more than I want to see those smoking ads and other shock ads. I watch TV to relax, darn it! How did they get the dog to whimper like that?
Very good valid point - people that are cruel to animals see people as animals, sometimes even in a worse situate and harm them with very little to no emotional stress. A good ad campaign! KEEP IT!
genius. I swear some people must think that because animals can't "talk" or express their agony in ways we can understand that they don't feel anything. Humans are messed up, and those that torture animals triply so. Thanks RSPCA.
Yeah, it's full-on, yeah it's hideous, yeah, it's pretty damning, but the statistics are there. Those who are cruel to aniomals are more likely to be cruel to their partners. It's amazing how many serial killers in the USA started off by 'torturing animals' as kids. As myvidview said, shocking, and about bloody time.
Finally, the RSPCA is taking the kid gloves off and showing some hard hitting adverts, instead of leaving it to the other animal rights & welfare groups to shock the public out of their complacency.
Is it bad that I care more about a dog? Oh wait, dogs usually cant make the concious decision to LEAVE an abusive master.

Shocking, and about bloody time.
Finally, the RSPCA is taking the kid gloves off and showing some hard hitting adverts, instead of leaving it to the other animal rights & welfare groups to shock the public out of their complacency.
