the difference is that the wheels are positioned differently. Skateboards have their wheels more of in the inside and longboards have them near the tips.

if your looking to turn a regular street deck into a longboard, i'd recommend using a riser pad as a template to drill holes onto the tais, and put your trucks on there, it makes a good replacement longboard for when one breaks!
