Chicago was on FIRE during this period. Dawayne made no attempt to duplicate Kath but he injected energy and creativity. The SOS album is a direct result.Chicago was always about taking chances but the powers that be forced them into the retro-act they are now. They are still a great band but I think there really could have been a part 3 to the story of Chicago The Greatest Band On Earth.
DeWayne was definately a shredder but then again all he was doing was putting in his own style. Pinnick was great for the band at one point ( Steve Lukather did the studio solo) but whens the last time they showed this much energy? "Over the top" maybe but listen to the original S.O.S album! That album couldnt have been made WITHOUT him. I saw this tour live THEY WERE AWESOME! I AM A HUGE TERRY DISCIPLE TOO. This was right before the label started to put in their 2 cents worth!
Thank you, dredayak18!! I thought that I was the only one who thought that Terry Kath was the greatest guitarist that ever lived. It's a shame that he's also the most underrated and overlooked guitarist ever. When you mention Jimi, Eddie, Page, and even SRV, if Terry's not alongside or, honestly, above them, then there's no point in putting any of them on a list. RIP, TK!!!!
I think Dawayne was technically proficient but over-the-top for Chicago. He could have played any style but chose to shred and use the whammy bar constantly just because he could. His replacement, however, is just boring and overly-linear. You can't have it all
I love the fact that you love dawayne cause I've had a mancrush on him in a very hetero way since i was born in 1990... and realized good music since I was 3 years old listening to dawayne in concert with Chicago, but NOBODY is better than TERRY KATH... NOBODY... ill throw out the names ... eddie V, clapton, page, jimi, randy rhoads, iommi, ... I love um all, but Terry is #1... just my opinion... dawayne is close behind though... dont get me wrong... Chicago rocks man!!!
Bailey put to much technical stuff into the songs, that isn´t good, let him play with Steve Vai or something like that...Terry has to much Blues I think, Keith is both, he has some technical stuff in his playing but he doesn´t forget the blues...he´s the best guitarist for Chicago!!!
This one is definitely one of David Foster's and Peter Cetera's best songs. The video was great as well. This performance with Jason Scheff singing is really good, although I think Cetera's edgier, hard driving voice suits it better overall. The guitar work here is even better than in the original though, imo.
The person that said Bailey is "too mechanical" is way off base. Actually he was too much of a standout. Howland simply blends in, which this band prefers.
I haven't seen anyone better than Bailey unless its god himself, Eric Clapton.
Lost in all of the Bailey/Howland debate is that the original guitarist Terry Cath was LEGENDARY. So much so that after seeing Terry in an L.A. club Jimi Hendrix walked up to him and told him he (Terry) was the baddest man that ever picked up a guitar. THAT'S love. THAT'S Respect. Bailey and Howland are both awesome, but don't forget where Chicago's guitarist roots came from.
Yes you´re right, Terry´s the root of Chicago, but I think that nowadays a new age of playing guitar starts (or playing music), and I think that Howland is the best for Chicago for nowadays...DB is to much mechanical...also because of Chicagos new Songs today Howland is much involved in these new Songs, He´s an enrichment for Chicago...
Dawayne got fired because he transended the band... He was so far superior of a musician to the rest of them... He stole the show... And guess what: They all got jealous !!!!! Then he was replaced by a guy who couldn't hold his pick!!! And guess what now: They're not jealous anymore!!! The whole world think like that dude...
Dawayne Bailey rules... please bring him back!!! pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase... We need him!!!! pleeeeeeeeeease
if chicago ever decided to give it up which i dont think they will, i say they have an end tour with the following lineup as follows: Lamm, Champlin, Walt, Lee, Jim, Cetera and Scheff both playin bass, Dawayne on guitar, Danny back on the drums, screw howland and tris lol. that would be a dream come true.
@soundlikeFabian thats a rediculous statement... keith howland is the worst musician that has ever been in the band... you obviously don't have an ear for music. Tris is a good drummer, just seraphine was much better.
@soundlikeFabian just for your info this isnt keith howland in the video, its dawayne bailey... im not sure if were on the same page... but keith howland is an average guitarist... hes certainly no dawayne or terry... keep rocking the chicago though.
@dredayak18 I know this is dawayne...I think Keith has some think that terry had but he also has something from Dawayne, thats the reason why I like him in Chicago, I think Keith is a damn good musician!!
scheff with the sammy hagar do. but Dawayne never dissapoints ehhh? I've probably seen them 7-8 times, by far the best concert was around 93-94 with Dawayne.
Dawayne was too good for the group. He stood out and the "originals" didnt like it so they didnt renew his contract. Notice how the guy that took his place just sort of blends in to the background. Dawayne was without a doubt the life of the group.
This is a good rendition of the song. As I've said many times I like Jason Scheff and he does justice to Cetera songs. Well most of them. Some he is hit or miss like "Hard Habit To Break" I admire he does them in the original key but if they're too hard to hit after doing the majority of the set already, then just dont do it cuz he cracks sometimes. But this was a great rendition.
Yeah I think this overall, Scheff was a lot more on point hitting all the notes. lol I just gotta say whassup with Tris's wardrobe. In the band's earlier years with him, he's always dressed funny. Sorry I miss Danny Seraphine but I still got respect for Tris though. Anyway this was a pretty good version with Scheff, especially with Dwane Bailey's mean ass guitar. Love it!
Jason Scheff sounds great when he's trying to be Jason Scheff, not Peter Cetera. And one of the reasons I love Chicago, is the fact that they obviously love playing music. Look at the smiles on Tris and Robert's faces, and Dawayne looks like he's having a blast with his solo. I don't think I could've smiled like that the year after Chicago 21 was released.
This is the best version of this song I have seen. Dawayne Bailey makes this song!! I never cared for the original, but his talent on this song makes it!!
Howland is a stinky piece of shit... Dawayne is a MASTER

I want to add that this song open a great 80's album
with cool mélodics songs all the titles are "best value"

one of my favorite with "if you live me now " and "hard to say i'm sorry"
this one is different in live than the studio version and the musicians bring a part of fantaisie really interesting.
