  • ok so this is some pretty good drumming. always been influenced by mike portnoy. he signed a cd for me. lol

ok, so i was reading through some of these comments and it was hilarious.. Zildjian is not a 500 year old company. He is a person, so is Sabian. In fact, Zildjian and Sabian were brothers (by blood) and didnt like eachothers ideas, so they split and made 2 different companies.. I still cant get over the fact that someone said it is a 500 year old company.. lmfao too funny...

  • I'm not a huge Portnoy fan but I must admit, this is an interesting drum part. Very creative..

  • WTF? Talking about hihat? The fuckeeeen thing is always closed. BFD!!!!!

  • what he does with the hi-hat never ceases to amaze me.

  • The grandmaster of rock drums himself

  • My rythm sense just ran away from me O.o !

This was the best thing I heard in my life !

  • johnny magia is the future !!!

  • a pala!!

  • wooooooooow! =D

  • Tme sigs to fool the kids. He just isn't shit kiddies. once you're past puberty he's so unnecessary. You''ll probably like Peter at some point deny his existence.

  • Perfect

  • ya know, my friend said the same thing about thomas lang....why does somebody this good play in such a shitty band?

  • DT isn't shitty, you just have to empathize with the album's theme

  • Actually the band isnt shitty...but for some reason lots of ppl hate James Labrie's voice. If you're one of those ppl then I understand y u hate DT.

I love DT but ppl have their opinions.

  • idiots, you can not do that ;) He's the king.

  • He's a poster boy of drumming skank.

  • mike portnoy o rei da bateria....!!!

    nota1000000000000000000000000.0000000000

  • whats the point of having 2 hi hats? are they 2 different sizes?

  • Why not? Lol XD

  • idk just seems kinda pointless

  • I was just kidding. It does seem pointless but maybe he does get different sounds from them.

  • i know you were kidding but i was just saying......

  • According to the specs on his website, and also other vid that I watched, he uses 14" in open position at the right, and 13" left in closed position at the left. So whenever he needs to switch on and off, he doesn't need to change anything with any of them. inproves speed I guess.

  • no one is just sligtly open (the right one from mike's view) used when he plays the double bass.

the other one is pretty far open so he can open and close it for accents like in some brakes here. (good example 3:43)

He can't do that when he plays the double bass.

and you're probably right about the sizes, just for the contrast :)

  • owh he can also close the right hi-hatt, just saw that xD.

    So probably different sizes.

  • progressive masterpiece

  • 3:06 LOL

  • The only bad thing about Dream Theater is that it is SO HARD to tap your foot to them...

  • It's not hard when you know the songs well enough ;) That might take a few listens but you can never get tired of DT. And when you can tap your foot to their songs, it's so cool, like at their gig when others just do like 4/4 because they're not musical enough, but you can bounce your head exactly like the music goes, at least I get kicks from that :P

  • Yeah, I was just kidding around because of all the time signature changes.

  • but he plays sabian

  • 1:37 is in Ytse Jam and Honor Thy Father fills as well! (also a loop in Garageband)

  • 3:45 is so damn hard

    really nice song

  • who succeeds is good xD

  • he is a god

  • no, i was saying basically the best drummer anyone knows of. the greatest drummer in the world could be a 16 year old kid in a basement for all we know. but nobodys heard of him.best KNOWN drummer.

  • True...so so true...and sad, if you think about it...since there's "drummers" who should really go back to the basics

  • wow this guy is amazing!

  • im cuming in the minute 3:40

  • Increible, un grande Mike Portnoy!!

    5*!!!!

  • Who ever is a drummer please show of hands...Paiste Zildjian or Sabian and why...if you've got another brand in mind please be my guest....

  • its all a matter of your preference. zildjian has been making cymbals the longest (for about 500 years?) but paiste has had the most innovations in cymbal making such as stacking. sabian is bascially a brighter version in most cases of zildjian. but the durability is about the same. go to local drum store and try them all out. youll like them all alot trust me. also istanbul, wuhan chinas (cheap and BEAST) and bosphorus are GREAT brands to check out. youtube memphisdrumstore they havemanycymbals

  • Thanx alot, Im a Zildjian fan myself, however I live in Mexico so sometimes it's kinda hard to buy a specific cymbal...I love Portnoy's Stax...I wanna make em sound just like his,...any suggestions? Low and High...in Zildjian if posible THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • I bought a $20 china and a splash and put them together myself, it sounds good.

  • Really? Just like that? One on top of the other? No washers no nothing in between? Cause I'd tried it like that in my cymbals lasted 4 full gigs and ripped to pieces...and with a felt between 'em well it's just like having two diferent cymbals...So...how'd you do it?

  • I bought a $20 dollar wuhan china, and i bought a paiste 10 inch splash ans put them together, and they're both holding up. Im sure theres other combinations and such but this works for me.

  • Paiste.I like how they sound.

  • Hes an awesome drummer

    my favorite.

  • That sized kit should be illegal.

  • I agree, idk if best drummer in the world. But best that's ever made themselves a gold album.

Ahh, this song took me FOREVER to learn on the drums(like 2 weeks 2hours a day atleast) but i got it:D (i can even get the swing triplets in the ragtime section mike only plays for triplet or 2. it makes me feel accomplished.idk if he wanted to put them in there or not.but if so and couldnt i feel like i can do something he couldnt (atleast at the time) if he didnt add them on purpose..oh well

  • cookies for you in actually playing this song XD

    time sig madness ftw

  • you can't base whos best on number of sales. Jordan Rudess is def. the best keyboardist ever but its not based on how many albums they have sold since 1999. Portnoy is best by his skill talent endurance, speed performance simultaneous time signatures, uses of different sounding cymbals in a logical fashion, energy, double-bass action, all that shit. Neil Peart may be talented, but Portnoy can "write" way better drum lines and keep them from getting out of hand or beat, while making it complex

  • Peart and Portnoy are on the same line in writing and keeping things in hand IMO. It's just that Portnoy uses more complex lines more often. I like them both a bloody lot. Good post btw, jmiester.

  • DREAM THEATER FTW NOTHING CAN COMPARE FUCK THOSE WHO THINK OTHERWISE xP

  • Fantastic song, i can play the first 2 minutes then get completely fucked over. No matter how many times i try and learn it i've never managed to get the whole thing right!

Maybe in another 10 years I'll nail it, who knows!

  • dream compasses are fuckin amazing always, but this time its absolutely IMPOSIBLE!!

  • Dude same here! I just skip that section at 2:00 because i don't understand the time signature at all :/ Then i fuck up at like 4:20. Oh well.

  • i always thught 2:00 was polyrhythm in 5/4...idk it worked for me..sounds the same.

  • Actually i think portnoy explained it in a Rhythm magazine interview.

It's in 11/4 but you don't really count it like that. He breaks it up into 5/4 and then 6/4. You know where 6/4 starts because he hits the crash after the fifth count :P It's really confusing. At least i can play it now lol. Mostly from memory.

  • oooo that makes sense! totally can count it now. but my method works as well? idk...i had the 5 snare hits. and then in between the 5 snare hits i had eiths and triplets. idk...i probably wrote it wayyyy wrong, but it made sense to me. and hell whatever i made it sounded impressive hahaha.

  • Lol yeah i guess whatever works for you. Even if it's just close. This song would be a nightmare to tab. Probably take weeks.

  • 3:44 thats is amazing :Oo

  • woa.. ! the time signatures !!!!!!

  • ryonafan you only say that because you cant see most of the thing that mike play's... lots of tecnique

  • Holy time signatures in a blender

  • hey ryonafan, biulding a bridge is not that difficult you only need 10000 workers and know how to do it, ashole

  • i just love 3:44

  • this isn't hard, you just have to memorize it...... and know how to play drum ofcourse

  • if so...pls upload a video of u playing this

  • playing it is only half of what is so impressive about this piece. writing it is just as amazing.

  • yeah i know

  • Hell no man. Lol the weird time signature makes it reallyyy confusing and trips you up when you try to play it. I can only play it until like a minute in. Then it gets really confusing.

  • then i guess i'm better than i think haha

  • Yeah maybe if you can play it xD

  • yeah like especially when you take a fill or at least when i do i get soo lost with all the time sigs if i were to play, or try to i should say, it exactly as he does here i'd prolly do so much better because eevery time i go take a fill like i get so thrown off

  • wooooaaaah

    the best 3:44

  • I'm gonna see DT in october

  • i hate you

  • Just freaking love this drumkit!

  • im going to watch DT in september!

  • lucky bastard

  • I'm gonna watch Dream Theater in August :P

  • me too :P

    12 august at mtl :P

  • are you seeing them in Chicago?

  • No, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. August 29hth.

  • dam hes good would he be one of the best drummist in the world

  • nominated best progressive drummer for the latest 16 years my friend.. To me he is the best skilled drummer. (My opinion)

  • i'm a super fan of DT.. maybe some people don't like prog music but IS A DOGMA that every member of DT is extremely high talented and skill.. and a very musician must admit that they are very good, even if he doesn't like them..

  • I'm not a fan of his style but he sure has talent and skills.

  • his snare sounds great

  • Comment removed

  • how many drugs r u on?

  • way better than joey jordison

  • i dont see how people say he sucks.

  • People say he sucks? They suck.

  • maybe 4 his fuckin face/attitude of "im a kick ass drummer" ... actually he is hahahahahahah!

  • One of DT's craziest tunes.

  • I also sai I use them sparingly. So what's your point. I don't like em in the metal constant one e and a two e 16th sterotypical way that Portnoy does every fucking song that I've come across.

  • So you're allowed to not use things you don't like, but yet you criticize me for not using traditional grip for metal? Hypocritical prick.

  • i think dudebuddy from all that remains uses traditional

  • If by dudebuddy you mean Jason Costa, then yeah. I guess he finds it more comfortable, but I only find it nice for jazz and marching.

    haha dudebuddy

  • i cant use it. lol

  • Each drummer has good things and bad things.

And yes, there were a LOT of good drummer on the past, but people have to accept that there are good drummers in the present too! It's kind of weird to say that Mike Portnoy 'sucks'. (I know that people like diferent music, but I think that is kind of impossible to him to get a lot of awards like he's got if he 'sucks'.

  • You real get me going zoo. There is nothing that I personally want to learn ABOUT MP. As for learning from him? There is not a damn thing this guy to teach me except the shitty double everybody can do them bass drums that I don't care about. I've got my Axis double pedal setup for a very rare occassion. I can play the stupid 16th note patterns that he and all the dipshit kick players do. It sucks as music so no wonder I choose not to. Quit denying MP's limitations. You actually are smarter than.

  • I will never say MP is the best drummer of today or ever. I WILL say he's not a shitty drummer. I've learned a lot from him about time signatures and developing one's own style. You hate metal and are thus predisposed to hate metal drummers as well, which is why I have a hard time respecting your opinion. I don't respect you as a person at all.

You also speak of double kick stuff as limiting, when in fact it's a musical expansion...Colaiuta, Lang, Palmer, Chambers, and many others use it.

  • its acceptable to not enjoy dream theater's music, but to say that Mike Portnoy sucks is a whole other thing. watch his videos before judging him, and if you dont like his music, why are you watching his videos and commenting on them?

  • Like guys like coluita and weckl or gadd haven't constantly and consistenly and always will record better drum tracks if you ask somebody that really knows and plays drums. If it were pro industry drummers voting on this Mp would never be considered. But throw in the politics and you'll get the reason. Shitty sabian cymbal suckers are the hot ticket right now. Grease the voting booth from Sabian you get your answer. Weckl or gadd or palmer wouldn't be caught dead w/Sabian. Suck

  • I dont really have anything in this but actually Weckl is in fact endorsed by Sabian. Anyways carry on haha

  • You're a G. Thank you.

  • Your acceptance of these limitions is indefensible if you want to talk chop shop. If you would simply state "who cares" this is who I liike I'd just say you were young and emotionally involved. But to endure your absolving of a barnyard on people spitter and to say Palmer is just a percussionist when he is the premier rock stickman is laughable and juvenile. And who is exactly that gives out these plastic performance of the year Sabian cymbal selling awards that you hold in such high esteem?

  • You know you're denial of these obvious limitations by Mp and Not guys like Palmer lang JOJO or buddy rich and Billy cobham or tony williams Virgil donati marco minneman ian paice mitch mitchell

joe morello peter erskine and many others don't exist. Saying that you like Mp is one thing but the flagrant fundamental limitations are obvius to drummers and even you. They are simply irrefutable.

  • You've obviously never seen Carl solo dude. Nobody that knows anything about stick control or speed or endurance or rudimental playing could say otherwise. He's right next to buddy rich in these departments and plays w/a larger stick too. Mp hasn't bounced a stick in his life. never has used a left hand lead. Cannot even buzz roll. Never even looked at Billy Gladstone or george lawrence stone book.

  • Mp and Terry Bozzio are cut from the same cloth. Zombie robo drummers. Humanoid souless sounding perfect notes like welds at the once awesome GM plant. The tune comes down the assembly line and the welds happen whether they be pretty or not. They do match a blueprint however and like the cars they all look and feel the same. Same tires wipers and smells. Not an ounce of creativity allowed once the plan leaves the engineering dept. I bet Mp plays his welds exactly the same every time.

  • If you had taken the time to learn anything about Portnoy before you started bashing him, you'd know he plays so much better live than in the studio, yet has won "Best Recorded Performance" 7 times. I don't know what you're smoking, but Terry Bozzio's a completely different player and I'm not sure what your basis is for this comment.

  • Come on, it's music. Enjoy all of it or limit yourself. I'm a musician and I don't know who I don't like because it's all the same notes, just a different order. There's no reason to bad mouth a musician unless for a really good reason. So you know, that's Mike Portnoy. He's a drummer and he's not that bad. He's fun to listen to. Everyone else you mentioned is good too. Everyone's good in their own way and they all can be enjoyed in some way or another. There's nothing wrong with liking them all

  • lol "not that bad" XD you crack me up haha, apart from that... awesome comment man :)

  • Ok. so let your hands learn from Portnoy. I fyou think there at drumming's zenith go see a shrink. yes Thomas lang plays so much closer to perfection but and you're going to hate this although true. carl palmer is more advanced than Thomas and plays w/more passion . Have you ever seen his snare drum demo?Look I'm just plain tired of pinting out the obvious technical defects. You want to like an engineer count the mathematical notes and I want passion and execution to make better soundingdrumming

  • You would bring up Carl Palmer here. He's a good percussionist, but behind the kit he's far different and in my opinion, less technically proficient than MP or Lang. Yes, I like precision, but I like passion in drumming as well, and if the goofy grin on MP's face when he plays isn't enough passion for you, I can't help you.

  • Also check out how his left hand hardly ever rises up on rebound stroke to right hand height? Also that death grip no fingers in the game is such a lame way to play drums. You can't bounce sticks when they're glued to your palms. yeah it looks like he flunked or bailed out of Berklee fast. They probably told him he had bad fundamentals and he said screw this.

  • Of course you think it's lame--anything outside of your tiny world is lame to you, old-timer.

You certainly like jumping to conclusions, don't you? "He does this, so he must be a jerk." "He does that, so it must mean he sucks." No justification, just your own twisted fantasies running wild.

  • Ok zoocrew. You don'y think that swing itsy section sound stiff and forced?Even perat has a better swing than Mp although chinese laundry starchy. I first learned swing before rock 8's so it is natural. maybe I just don't understand how any drummer can't swing. so many can't. Now do you endorse this constant deathh grip matched single stroke for palette approach. Shouldn't a drummer that wants to expand go back to art school and get some more colors and learn how to mix them?

  • Not if he's Picasso and is just fine where he is. Granted, he pulls it off better live, but mathematically speaking, every note's in the proper triplet slot for swing.

He sounds fine and has great dynamics, so I while I don't think his strokes look pretty, it doesn't really matter.

If you want killer technique, check out Thomas Lang.

  • EVERYONE look at 3:05 air bass ftw lol

  • portnoy makes it look so freakin easy

  • this is for me one of the harder songs of dt but no only in drums .... in guitar is big too

  • What About Keyboard? :P

  • of course i mean is hard in all the instruments...this one....metropolis.....all songs in train of th cd...and a change of seasons...:) my favorite ...

  • Change of seasons is my favorite too =D

  • yeah ;) i think dream theater has the most talented (or really closer) musicians...

  • Bring Back The Purple Monster (or the green one) !

  • I'd love to play this drumset once... just to know how a drummer like Portnoy handles tuning, rebound, setup etc.... Just wondering

  • damn off beats

    wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    this is really sick

  • I dont particularly like all dream theater songs but damn i love watching portnoy play what a sick drummer

  • whats the time signature in this song

  • it must change alot

  • i dont know how many different time signatures are in it but i know there are somewhere around 120+ changes it could be 4 signatures and just an insane amount of switching for all i know but i dont think it is but it switches like constantly almost better off playing this song by ear and memory than trying to count it out lol

  • Damn right. Just memorize it and forget counting in this case haha.

  • i agree lol way too many changes

  • counting isnt that hard,

what i tend to do is split it into twos and threes though.

  • it changes 80 times in the last section alone.... i dont know how long that section is and im not off back to the vid to check :D btw yes i did go and count how many times it changed

  • haha anyone who can better that then please do if not keep you shit boring pointless arogant comments to yourself

  • lol he rim shots at 3.07 and punishes himself :L

    great drummer

  • lol i never noticed that until you pointed it out.

  • so are you :D

  • What does he do in this video besides playing the drums he wrote for the song? Or do you suggest he UNDERplays his songs from now on to avoid looking like an 'arrogant fuck'? He twirls the sticks in the gaps that he doesn't play out of habit, just like alot of drummers do and he's been doing that since the Majesty days. Or do you think he's showing off because he makes it look effortless? Keep in mind that at this point he's probably played TDOE about 100 times. He knows the song pretty well.

  • all i have to say is that anybody who doesn't like dream theater is a homo.

But, the only thing i dont like about them is the singer.

  • hey La brie kicks ass..... i dont care what anyone says. also i know plenty of people who hate dream theater but have slept with your mom.... several times....

  • good comeback... haha.

The old 4th grade "Your Mom" HHAAAAA

    U R A HOMO

  • right i'm a homo... and you're sitting there reading this slapping your knee with your dick! we are all on to your insecurities about your tiny penis and lack of a girlfriend... and a reply to this comment would confirm those suspicioms

  • lol. you pwned him, man.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • guys you are strong on words, well be the man and try something better than dream theater then you can say that they are not so good.

  • In the matter of fact... they dont.

  • its a band, you knew that right?

  • I love watching this, and he IS the best drummer around right now. But I can't stand how much he shows off now that he gets recognized as the best.

He looks like an arrogant fuck that you'd love to punch through most of this video.

  • I don't know man... After watching the video it just looks like some sweet drumming, didn't see too much showing off, Certainly nothing that would make him an 'arrogant fuck'. He did a couple of twirls, but thats about it, the song didn't really allow it.

  • its because your jealous. YOU JUST CAN'T WIN! Probably about two years ago people would be saying OMG! Mike Portnoy is so overrated and now he's considered the best he's an arrogant tosser

  • ... arrogant fuck? are you fucking kidding me? he looks more like a man having some fun

  • god hes just having fun with it no point in doing something like drumming if its not fun

  • Comment removed

  • He's enjoying playing his own music. Every musician in the world does it. Are you saying that he should play looking like he's sorry for playing?

  • This song proves what an amazing drummer Mike really is. When it comes to flexibility and creativity there's no one like him. 5* for the video. :)

  • Jesse Margera?! WTF... HOW!?

The similarities between Jesse and Mike stop at "Drummer". I love CKY, so it's not like I haven't seen both bands. If someone could explain this stated-similarity, I'd be grateful.

  • awesome, not one damn simple part in that song. Portnoy is amazing. Makes everything look so easy. Great video.

  • eacosta85

    sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fucking gay

  • oh, rly?

  • Fuck you.. Give me ONE REASON!! He is the best drummer in the world:S

  • no one said he was the best drummer but an actual guy born to be drummer i can guarantee you that he is to used to rock that he will have trouble playing any tipe of latin beats a good example of latin drummer and jazz and all that is dave weckl and akira jimbo they will have difficulties mastering what mportnoy does and portnoy will have problems playing what akira and dave do.

  • yeah, who else can come up with so many damn odd time sigs?

  • Soooo Boring??? WTF!!! Anyway, probably you're not a drummer or you don't like music... or both...
