  • Sigma looked a bit sharper but it could have been manual focusing issue.

  • great vid. PLEASE so one like this about the dif 50mm's. This vidz is EXACTLY wht ive been lookin for. great work

  • I've owned the Sigma 30mm for 4 years and so far it's been my favourite lens. Infact, many other lenses have entered and exited my kit, while this one is firmly at home in my kit bag. I'm a live event/gig photographer and it's proved its worth in low-light environments time after time. If you're considering this lens, go for it; you really won't regret adding it to your setup.

  • @nickbrickett Couldn't agree more. Just added it to my setup, and i am very happy with it!

  • seems like the sigma makes stuff look thinner?

  • Does the camera vibrate with the sigma?

  • Considered the Samyang 35mm F1.4?

  • Did you leave the tiffen filter on the sigma for filming your tests?

  • I think its a great video and really helpfull, however I´ve a question, was the white balance set with the canon or the sigma lens?, maybe thats what causses the low color difference seen in the video.

  • I'm kind of stuck in a dilemma. I have a Canon 550D, kit lens and a 50mm 1.8; I don't know what I should get next! I'm thinking of a sigma 70-200 2.8 or another prime lens like a sigma 30 1.4. I like shooting portraits, candids and sometimes street photography.

I'd like to see what you think. Please keep in mind that I'm only 14 and I have a limit in what I can spend.

  • I'm sorry, you might as well call the canon a 56mm f1.4 on a 7D...

  • For image quality tests I always use PhotoZone: photozone.de/canon-eos/298-sigma-af-30mm-f14-ex-hsm-dc-test-report--review

  • my mouse jiggled hard when you are telling me to subscribe~

Anyway, thanks for the review. I was thinking about getting the Canon, but now I am doubting myself!

  • what's the diff. between 50mm and 35mm? and what --mm means? :D and what is used for :D thank you

  • Dude, i bought sigma 30mm f1.4 and 50mm 1.4 finally. haha

  • @iancheang1003 im buying them too, on my t3i the 50mm will be my medium telephoto 85mm like and the 30mm will be my normal 50mm like

  • That was a bass not a guitar

  • Enjoyed the video, informative and fun.

  • i own the sigma and it is a great lens, though i may be changing to full frame in a couple of years so am considering the 50 1.2

the video shows that the canon has more saturated colors, which looks really nice, it seems more alive, but at times the sigma feels sharper, they are really close, for stills i'd say that the sigma takes a while to af, teste a 35, much faster, for video i do not think the 35 is worth it, if you want L lenses, buy a full frame and go fot the 1.2, for crops = sigma

  • Canon has better color and contrast. Also I like the subscribe halo sound.

  • This has probably been said, but I don't want to look through the other comments but I don't care about AF. You shoot video.....Stick with video! Don't try to please everyone. I HAVE A REALLY GOOD IDEA FOR WHAT YOU SHOULD BE SHOOTING AND HOW IT SHOULD BE. Think of this as a Director/Producer stand point. If your interested contact me. I'm sure your time will not be wasted.. P.S. All detail can and will not be talked about in email. I will have to meet up with you if serious.

  • Canon is more saturated in colors up front but you could punch up colors in post on the sigma. Overall, in the right hands, the final image quality is negligible. Gut says sigma ftw.

  • the 30mm looks more sharper when hes looking between the cameras

  • well made :) thanks

  • i thought it is recommended that you use a shutter speed of 60 whenever you do video with dslr.

  • ths sigma looks good - but you forgot to mention a important part - you can use the canon 35 on a full frame body the sigma is only for crap.. oh sorry crop sensors

  • NICE VIDEO !!!

  • personally, I think the Canon delivers a much brighter punchier image....

  • Great review, Thanks for sharing.

  • Any chance you could get your hands on a Canon or Fuji lens with a direct focus and/or zoom input for a review?

  • best review i've ever seen !

  • Yeah you see the difference very clearly and I guess it worth really to spent more money for canon!

Future item in my list :)

    Thanks for video

And your subscribe pleasing at the end makes me always laugh bahahaha

    Greetings from germany

  • Wow, sigma is the one to go for price. This is the best review ever

  • Haha wow the Sigma looks much better on video.

  • Would you recommend the 30mm sigma over the canon 50 1.8 for a crop sensor? It'll be my first lens after the 18-55 kit. Thanks!

  • looking at 1080p they are out of focus, tha 35 L More

  • i only subscribed because of the last bit hahaha

  • this is an unfair match up because you are compairing a Canon L series lens to just a normal sigma. obviously the L series wins

  • @Chromeburners It isn't "just a normal sigma". This is their top-of-the-line EX series.

  • The canon 35mm and Siggy 30mm are more for filming? How are the still picture performance?

  • @alcoholicmonkey1980 both preform well for photography, but the canon 35 does preform better.

  • @onelonedork Thanks buddy

  • Comment removed

  • @alcoholicmonkey1980 if you only do filming, the samyang 35 1.4 might be an alternative. but you'd have to focus manually and, i think, also set the aperture manually.

  • @Air50HE I should have a test comparing the 3 lenses in a few weeks.

  • @Air50HE Sweet bro thanks!

  • one thing about canon its better built and it will retain the value much better in the long run. but sigma is a good place to start if you just starting out plus the money you save can go to another lens.

  • Canon 35mm 1.4L ofcourse.... Better CA control, better image quality, better build quality and rounder BOKEH

  • Which camera was used with which lens? I'm thinking the color differences are attributable to the camera rather than the lens. I've got a 550d and a 60d, and the colors are different. 60d cheats yellow and 500d red. Kinda like your example. If I had to guess I would say the sigma lens was on a 60d and the canon on a t2i/550d. Am I close?

  • @particlelight I rotated the sigma and canon 35mm between my 7d and t2i through out the shoot.

  • My wife wants to get a 7d and a prime. We're looking at 50mm equivs. Which is sharper, the Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the Canon 28mm 1.8?

  • I though sigma was better but I think it might be because I prefer the 30mm to the 35mm

  • Best comparison revie I have ever seen ! Thanks.

  • ha ha love the humour!!!! well done thanks for that.

  • Great review, cheers.

  • SIGMA BETTER !!!!!!!!!!

  • i love the end but great review!

  • canon hands down

  • What about sharpness, AF speed and accurancy? Yeah the colors look better on the canon but the sigma is cheaper and colors are easily adjusted in photoshop.

  • @roger767 sharpness goes to canon. The sigma can be a little soft in the corners. AF speed is about the same but the canon 35mm is a little faster. Focus accuracy seems about the same on the 7d, but the Canon 35mm pulls ahead on the t2i. The sigma is much smaller, but has a louder focus motor. I think most people will be more then happy with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 when they see the price difference.

  • hi, i just have the sigma, but i have trouble to have a sharp image with 1/30 shutter speed. so i test it with flash and i got a sharp image with 1/125 shutter speed. so i would like to know what is the best shutter speed to get a sharp image?

  • @tshingonn To get a sharp image a 1/30, you'll need to hold the camera very still, and carefully squeeze the shutter button between breaths. It helps if you set the camera to a fast continuous mode and fire off a burst of three quick shots. The middle shot will probably be the best. But, this is only to minimize camera shake. If your subject moves at all, you'll still get blur. I generally consider 1/60 a minimum shutter speed for photographing people who aren't moving.

  • You just saved me a lot of money, thanks

  • @pbwarrior42 Glad to hear it.

  • Same for me, thanks!!

  • Canon 28mm f/1.8 its wider then sigma 30 mm??????/

  • @blablamusic a little bit.

  • Great Video Info :)

  • 30mm sigma wider and 35mm closer., that's the different.

  • Personally I like the sigma better and I also think it gives you a more realistic color. @onelonedork which one is closer to real life?

  • @mvakleko I'm going to stay out of that battle. I use both quit a bit.

  • humm.. Im a bit confused.. The sigma is made for aps-c sensor, I know that but does this means you dont aply the x1.6? So it would be real 30mm.. Because you were saying it would be near eye view (50mm for me) so i dont know now... Looks like a great lens! I just subscribe

  • @thomasfontaine1994 1.6 crop factor times 30mm gives you a 48mm equivalent. So just about 50mm. Thanks!

  • Hey, what would you suggest for an all round general purpose lens for video between the sigma 24mm and the sigma 30mm, i am considering the 30mm as its a stop faster and slightly cheaper, but i am wondering if 30mm is a but too tight for a general purpose lens? any ideas

  • @thomson48 Well the build on the 30mm f1.4 is better, but the 24mm f1.8 is wider plus a macro. I find that 30mm is about right for general purpose. If you're not sure just take your camera in to a place that sells camera gear and ask to try out a zoom that covers these ranges. Take a few shots from the same place at 24mm and 30mm then see which better suits your needs.

  • what about the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 ? I notice the price is lower than the sigma 30mm 1.4, but would you recommend that for video and do you think that is also a low budget film option?

  • @levene1 Yes the 50mm f1.4 is handy. It is also one of the 3 prime lenses I recommend for DSLR filming. The only thing to point out is that the 50mm f1.4 looks like 80mm on a crop sensor camera. So if that is the only lens you have, you will need a bit more distance between the camera and the subject. The sigma 30mm f1.4 is closer to what you see in your field of vision on a crop sensor camera, which makes it much more handy for indoor, and small space filming.

  • @onelonedork Okay, so for a T2i it is better to get the sigma 30mm f1.4 right ? because t2i is a crop sensor camera?

  • @levene1 The Sigma 30mm is only for corp sensor cameras (i.e. t2i). The Canon 35mm f1.4 will work with both crop sensor and full frame cameras.

  • great man your videos are very informative. thank you

  • The colors in your face look a lot more realistic through the sigma.

  • u r a great man ...hey sigma all the way ....actually i didnt notice any difference that let me go for canon.

    good video

    keep up ;)

  • pretty nice bass.

  • @singaporeKKKx Thanks!

  • Why are most lenses in the 30mm range so poor optically? This is a very important focal length for crop sensors, yet you can't find one decent 30mm lens at a fair price. The only good lens is the expensive Canon 35mm 1.4. The 35mm F2 isn't horrible, but I really don't want a prime that is any slower than 1.8.

The cheap 50mm 1.8 shouldn't kick the crap out of the Sigma 30mm 1.4, but it does. Someone needs to release a quality 30mm prime lens at a decent price.

  • @charvelgtrs Not a fan of the canon 35mm f2. Manufacturing lenses in this focal length has always been a bit more complicated then other focal lengths (like 50mm) and often requires more glass elements. For example the canon 35mm f1.4 has 11 elements and the 50mm f1.2 only needs 8 elements. (might want to fact check that)

  • @charvelgtrs

Sigma needs to redesign their 30mm 1.4. They should make it a full-format lens, so vignetting is reduced, border resolution needs to be improved, barrel distortion is too high for it's focal length and finally chromatic aberrations really need to be toned down. The build quality and focus ring are great, so no improvements need to be made in that respect.

  • @charvelgtrs But if you do all of that, then the lens price will probably be more like $900.

  • Comment removed

  • @onelonedork

The Sigma 50mm 1.4 is only $499 and is excellent, so why would an improved 30mm 1.4 be that much more expensive?

  • @charvelgtrs You could be right. I'm not an optical engineer. If I had to guess though, I would say the performance on the 35mm f1.4 is probably due to all the glass elements shoved inside (hence the much larger size). The sigma 50mm f1.4 has the same element count as the canon 50mm f1.2 but benefits from newer design tools. It seems like Sigma would have to follow that path for an upgrade to the 30mm f1.4. Then again, this is all speculation, I could be completely off my rocker.

  • @onelonedork

That would suck if that is what it took to really improve their 30mm 1.4. I mean the 30mm 1.4 looks fine in video mode, because you are only recording 1080p resolution and parts of the top and bottom of the 3:2 sensor are cropped to produce a 16:9 image, so you get more of the sweet spot of the lens.

  • BTW, this video is great.

  • Yay, thank you so much for making this video. The side by side comparison definitely helped out on what someone would get if investing that much money into the L series Canon. All of your videos are so helpful, thank you for being on youtube :)

  • The Canon wins of course, colors are better. However the Sigma is close enough that I would choose that and invest in more primes. I've been set on getting the Canon 28mm 1.8 for my 7D, because I could use it on a full frame for whenever I switch over. But now from this video and your previous videos of mentioning it makes me rethink. Thanks for the videos, helpful.

  • @CheckThisGadget If you do go full frame, a used Sigma 30mm f1.4 still sells for around $385 to $400. So if you use it then sell it down the road, I would consider that $30 or $40 loss a very affordable rental fee.

  • is it possible to get a beginner dslr setup for about 850$?

  • Thanks for this. Very useful. I'm wondering whether to buy the Sigma because I haven't the money for the Canon. But I'm also looking at Canon EF 35mm f2 and the Canon EF 28 f1.8 USM. I've seen some great deals for the Canon Ef 35mm f2 .

  • you have lots of money. i would not buy the almost same focal length primes.

  • @ajiaggarao Actually my Canon 35mm came from a photographer late on his rent, I ended up with a very good deal.

  • @onelonedork its not just the 35. ive seen several of your videos. you almost got the full line of L and non-L primes! good job on the videos btw!

  • @ajiaggarao Thanks! and thanks for watching!

  • Hi,

Have been watching your tutorials and videos since last year!

Wich one would you recommend for a Canon eos550D or T2i like in the US?

I wanna start making short-films and i've seen that primary lens are the best in low light conditions...

    Thank You,

    Otman

    (Belgium)

  • Canon definitely has a softer motor. But isn't as wide.

    GARBAGE PAIL KIDS!!!! OMFG

    I think the sigma wins.

I definitely think we think the Canon is better only because of the price. But the sigma owns.

  • 35 pwns the sigma

  • "I ovn both so i am probably not a very good person to talk about it".

Shoulden't you be a quite good person to talk about it since you ovn both I meaa, and you are also very capable of using the lenses to their full potensial.

Great vid btw, just veep up the good work and the subs will com evenusally :) (sorry for my bad English btw)

  • @herregud2 Since I own both that kind of means I couldn't decide which one I like better. I kept the Sigma 30mm f1.4 even though I have the Canon 35mm f1.4. I found them both to useful.
