In the book and other movies, the King pardoned people, the King actually had some back bone in the 1972 movie and a little in the 1985 movie, he conducted the whole trial while the Queen didnt say much.

Also in the other movies there were Kings and Queens of other suits like the King and Queen of Diamonds had a small role in the 1985 movie. The cartoon lost a lot.
