I would have been among the thousands cheering when Garvin laid down that Hands of Stone punch. I could tolerate Rhodes as part of The Superpowers and in Wargames, but otherwise I thought he sucked.
Thanks for posting the video! I was at this show. 11 years old, mowing lawns for ticket money for NWA at the Baltimore Arena. Never hosted Starrcade but we always got a killer Great American Bash card. And the Crockett Cup.
Funny how the referee went to check his arm to see if he was "conscious" (which clearly, he wasn't) before realizing that he's pinned and could just count the three, lol.
Barry Windham was a crappy heel. I think he was the single most overrated wrestler of the 80's. Yeah, he could wrestle. But so could Brad Rheingans. He was boring and I always thought Luger gave them a different element.
@MrHoopsFanatic At that time, during the end of the Crocketts sponsorship of the NWA, there was no better way of turning someone heel, than having them beat down Dusty Rhodes. But I have to admit, Garvin was a much better heel than face. You know, no one mentions Stings heel turn in 1999. It was booked poorly, but it could have been much more, ironically it was against Hogan too.
@Mattraction513- I think Jesus might have turned heel against him too, remember the polka dots plumber gimmick?
@HellsGladiator stings heel turn in 99 , i dont think came off because hogans name was dirt with the fans , i think people actually cheered when it happen lol
@donn409 It's amazing with all his great matches he didn't lose any weight. You would think he would have burned some calories. Must have had some kind of metabolism problem or just ate like a pig. He was great though.
@danteras23 Yea, you couldn't help but love Big Dust. It pissed me off when he got sh*t on by other wrestlers. I liked Garvin until he turned on Dusty. They were great as the Risky Business Boys.
JCP was pretty much on its last legs by this time. Vince was partially responsible with The Survivor Series by holding the cable companies hostage. Then he put the Rumble Royale on USA the same night as the Bunkhouse Stampede. No one in NYC cared about Bunkhouse Battle Royals.
Garvin woulda made an excellent horseman after arn n tully left. He wrestled like a heel anyway. Then they shoulda recruited Paul orndorff or Greg valentine 2 team with him. Nwa mighta survived
@blaknyte08 Garvin would've never made a good Horseman no way shape of form he or anyone else take the place of Arn or Tully in the Horseman. That would be like Lex Luger taking Hulk Hogan place in the nWo when they was hot.
@datdamnleroygreene there were PLENTY of wrestlers in the biz at that time that coulda filled in nicely with flair n windham. and YES garvin was 1 of them. valentine, orndorff,al perez. i could go on. many wrestlers who had that horsemen esque persona.
@blaknyte08 Al Perez, Valentine nor Garvin could've took Tully or Arn place .Those 3 in the Horseman would've been the worse incarnation of the group. Arn Anderson was 1 of the cornerstones of the group, irreplaceble. Al Perez would've been like Paul Roma was no 1 would care. Garvin was past his prime not a good face or heel. Orndoff against the Horseman better. Valentine, you see he & Flair similarities because Johnny valentine(Greg's dad) help trained Flair. Thar's not Horseman esque
@datdamnleroygreene garvin had the respect of the nwa fans. he was the world champion, the man who beat flair,2 b exact. his style was a heel style. valentine had the history with flair, had teamed with him b4,was familiar with the jcp format. wouldve came in and done well. orndorff against the horsemen couldve worked but with them wouldve worked well too,at the time. he had the elite style just like valentine. they both woulda fit right in. garvin woulda fit in too. wuts not horsemen esque?
@datdamnleroygreene yes, under the horseman name. i believe it woulda worked out perfecctly. but hey all of this is a matter of opinion. whos 2 say it wouldve DEFINITELY worked or DEFINITELY NOT worked?
@blaknyte08 If JCP felt it would've worked they would've ran with the idea. Like you said your opinion it would've worked I begged to differ. The best incarnation of the Horseman in my opininon was Flair , Tully, Arn & Barry Windham. Think they went the right direction not reviving the horesman without Arn. To me they were never able replaced Tully in other incarnations of the Horseman. Larry Zybysko would've been probably been the only wrestler to come close fill that void
@datdamnleroygreene zbysko? now there i beg 2 differ. the only one in my scenario that jcp had any control over was garvin. cuz orndorff n valentine were still in wwf at the time. and with what was going on in 88 i dont think they(orndorff, valentine) woulda jumped ship. tully was def hard 2 replace. i believe it woulda been more workable and believable in 88 given the climate of wrestling at the time. orndorff, garvin, valentine, either 2 of the 3 works IMO
@blaknyte08 Zbysko was a heat magnet. Like I say he could've felt the void Tully left behind but by no means he could've 100% took Tully's place. I'm not talking about a version of the Horseman with Flair/Windham .Without Arn there it would've tarnished the Horseman legacy. Flair,Anderson,Zbysko,Windham would've been a great incarnation of the Horseman. They did the right thing by resurecting The Horseman without Arn but when they did in the 90's Larry would've fitted the bill better than Roma
@blaknyte08Now we're talking about 2 eras also. You discussion is when Flair& Windham were the only 2 left in the final moments of JCP. I feel they did the right thing about not resurecting the Horseman. They hinted the idea with Kendall Windham a few times, glad they didn't with him or anyone else.JCP knew it wouldn't work. Now in the WCW era when they did resurected the Horseman Zbysko would've been a better fit than Roma & Larry was under WCW contract.
@jshkendra Well if a manager (Paul Ellering) is making a bigger salary than 2 of the hardest working wrestlers in the company are, I don't blame them. That is part of the reason why Tully & Arn left and went to the WWE.
was there any major blowoff for ronnie garvin turning heel or was this the reason why barry windham finally gotten over and garvin went to wwf at the time, if so it does make sense, but dusty could have done it differently... o no another dusty finish lol
@cmhero85 There was no major blowoff, Garvin left the NWA not too long after this; he went to the WWC and AWA for a bit, winning the tv title in the AWA and the Universal title in the WWC.
Garvin got a hell of a pop after punching that fat fuck! By this point the fans where tired of Dusty, as he was constantly booking himself to always be on top.
@deanw0rmer Are you serious??? In NO way was this when the NWA started going down. Any person can tell you that 1987-89 were banner years for the NWA, especially 1989. The matches were excellent, the storylines were incredible and the overall product was outstanding. WCW didn't start going down till late 1990 AFTER Sting won the title, and it wasn't even because of Sting, they just had poor booking.
@deanw0rmer No. This was in July 1988. JCP was on its last legs then. Dusty used the "Dusty Finish" so many times and cheapened Ric Flair's stock as champion. As for Bill Watts, he came in in 1992. It wasn't much better, since he promoted his son, Erik, as the other wrestlers' expense, especially Rick Rude.
worst thing was there was no fued following this a few weeks later garvin left wcw for wwc and scoivane said rhodes beat up garvin so bad that he left the company...just horrible
@imdagr8st I agree that it would have been better if Garvin had stuck around longer. As I recall he was in Gary Hart's heel stable for a while. But this was a great heel turn!
How many face/heel turns did Dusty have from here until the end of his run? I remember Garvin, The Road Warriors, Dr Death and Kendell Windham all turned heel, and The Midnight Express, Ivan Koloff, and Rick Steiner all turned face. I'm sure I'm missing a few-
@datdamnleroygreene Not really. If you hint at it, fans start to want it and it makes sense when it comes, when it happens out of nowhere it just confuses people. Predictable is usually predictable because it's the right thing to do, nowadays the predictable is turned on it's head to try and 'swerve' the fans.
Not immediately. Instead of a huge feud with Rhodes and becoming aligned with The Horsemen, Garvin was managed by Gary Hart for a month or two, then left, where he showed up in the AWA as a heel. After a few months there as one of the top heels, he moved to the WWF, where he quickly became a mid-card jobber-
I remember watching this, and I swear I knew the second that Garvin stepped into the ring that he was going to punch Dusty in the face. Ron and Barry had been partners, and everybody seemed to be turning on Dusty around that time.Plus, there was really no other reason for Garvin to be there. I always hated Dusty,so I thought it was great.
