My Japanese trapdoor snails had 7 babies a few weeks ago. I returned the adults to the pet store where i bought them. I feed the babies fish flake food but i'm thinking of switching over to algae disc. Is this better for them?
Yeah definately buy the algae disc. They love that stuff. Snails are Omnivores so they will eat meat or algae, but they really do love the algae. For a while I was feeding them shrimp pellets. They seem to like those too.
I got an extra tank for the babies, but the Big Ice storm killed most of them. Sad, but I still have 5 big babies that have grown bigger than the parents were. It's really cool.
I just noticed my mystery snails had a batch of eggs in my 29 gallon. The snails are in the 10 gallon and the eggs are in the 29 gallon. I never took care of mystery snail eggs before and I don't know what to expect. How long until they hatch?
Keep them moist. I used a spray bottle to put a light mist on them once a day. More frequent is probably good too, but Don't drown them, they will drown if they get too wet. Expect them to hatch in about 4 weeks. Also, keep your eyes out to see if they're mating. That'll assure you that the eggs are firtile.
I spray them about 4 times a day. The first batch I don't think will survive but the second batch (Yes I got another one the day after I found the first one,) I think will survive. I have 4 big mystery snails and a ton of little ones. I don't know how they mate but they are always on top of each other and touching each other (like their bodies, not their shells)
