  • Happy mondays eat your heart out!

  • great tune! anyone know where I can get a Colon album? can't find them on amazon.

  • And here, ladies and gentlemen, is 90s Britpop in a nutshell.

  • Oh God I never saw this one when it came out. You can just imagine people like Zane Lowe sounding like this.

  • Basically shows how indie is full of bullshit.

  • thats not Paul Heaton singing is it?

  • Viva Brother?

  • nice song in the wrong place

  • It kind of sounds like a teenage fanclub parady :) as much as I love the fanclub!

  • I want the whole song on my PC!!!!!

  • I actually like the song xD

  • I've lost count of the amount of times I've been told that some new band are awesome only to be presented with lame shit like this. Bang on!

  • Too heavy and real for me! I'm such a granddad.

  • I'm off down the Dublin Castle!

  • God, I hate Noel Gallagher.

  • @hellojacobhitch4545 Oh no you didn't.

  • I love this song! Is it a parody?

  • this is just so clever. Oasis lookalikes playing a soundalike beatles song, i love it.

  • Is there any songs actually like this that someone can link me to?

  • @RippedWingCommander Sounds like a Teenage Fanclub song to me. Take your pick....

  • What's Monkfish doing presenting a music show?

"Get your knickers on and get me a cup of tea"

  • noel gallagher was going to do this sketch back then , they wrote the sketch for noel because he was a big fan of the show, but because oasis were touring he never got to do it.

  • I wish someone had told Viva Brother this is a spoof. They seem to have taken it seriously in their slavish attempts at copying it.

  • @Gulftastic Do they even exist outside of the NME?

  • the mu-SICK biz..

  • hahahah just like zane lowe on gonzo

  • @modboy6 Tell me about it, Zane Lowe's so full of shit that he should be rebranded as a sewage distillery...then shot

  • Did Morrissey write the lyrics?

  • 0:01 - 0:07 intro song ???

  • Ah, the Oasis comparisons are quite funny!

  • @whengoodtimesgobadd It's a good question, bud. He's just a failed indie popstar anyway! :-D

  • It's funny because it's true!

  • HAHAHA!!!

  • @whengoodtimesgobadd Proudly.

  • The NME back when this was broadcast, 1995-97 was excellent. Long interviews, decent review section, covered a lot of ground. It's total shite nowadays, they are praying that putting Pete' Talentless Twat' Doherty on the cover every week will stop them going bust.

  • Genius.

  • Indie sucks ass.

  • And as everyone else agrees, the NME is for w@nkers.

  • HaHa! Yes 90's indie bands did suck big time. Anyone here remember the hyped up britpop scene that actually didn't exist but was instead a creation of magazines like NME to jump on the success of Oasis (remember them) and Blur. The press at the time tried to create a new music scene (just like Punk 20 years ago at that time) to show that british music was the best in the world. Well they failed, no-one cared for it, britpop died before it even begun.

  • @RMJ8791 Don't talk rubbish. If Britpop died before it began, how did you get 4 or 5 years where British indie music was dominant on the radio and in the press and where Blur and Oasis's battle to be number one would make the evening news? If you don't like Britpop, fair enough, but you can't say it never had any impact.

  • @RMJ8791 r u a critic - u dick?

  • @RMJ8791 r u a critic - u dick ?

  • This has the NME to a tee - bands that spiel like The Sex Pistols but sound like Northern Uproar.

  • This is perfect, everyone I know who likes Indie music thinks it's hardcore, then I listen to some of their songs and it's like this.

  • simon playing Liam Gallagher ? O.o reminds me of it :D

  • Tony Way looks so young!

  • Standing in line for concerts is so try-hard

  • Breathing is so mainstream.

  • They're not actually that bad. Be better if I was off my face though.

  • is it sad that I rather liked the tune?

  • @MyMandaM give me that over dull as dishwater oasis any day

  • Thats the boy from the Beautiful South singning innit?

  • @switcher007 No, I think it's a comic actor called Tony Way.

  • Nah - its the actor Tony Way.

  • better than Oasis

  • nice

  • best band since the beatles..!

  • @fifthera Dude i found this video funny as fuck, i get the joke. Hang on, "any genre [you] like"? do you really think that anyone who doesn't like the same thing as you is a cunt and should be gassed? That's pretty narrow man. I mean, it's not like when the NME tell me to do something i do it, i just happen to like a lot of bands they cover, but i don't get all my music from them. Don't be so trapped in your "genre". Branch out, you might like it.

Nice tracks btw. Very Aphex twin.

  • So the reason why Kurt Cobain blew his brains out was because he fancied doing some interior decorating?

  • iv made this tune into an mp3 and i play this loud in my car!!

  • Total piss take on NME... every new band, WORDS JUST CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW BIG THEY ARE!!

    ...until the NEXT band, OMG!

  • its actually not a bad tune!

  • The Charlatans wouldn't even have it as a B side.

  • I love how the host is so intense and the band turns out to be absolutely lame

  • @Loomr Basically, you said it. Take a look upstairs at the Top Comments. Frankly, I think all NME WRITERS should be gassed, Lol!

  • The singer's in Spaced.

  • Almost expected him to say "it's well fucking futile!" :-)

  • this just made me realise how much i like indie, haha

  • "its loud and its dangerous!" lol

  • Spot on.

  • Reminds me of a Pitchfork Media journalist.

  • @atomic75 He probably rated the performance at 7.2 or something...

  • Kick. In. The. Sun.

  • Haha.Tony Way is class.

  • I love ridiculous camera angles :D

  • @ArekTM82 so do the idiots who produce most 'yoof' tv

  • Comment removed

  • @allgoonersaregay Jesus your dumb.

  • @Dermo1985 my name isn't jesus and I can speak so shut up!

  • @allgoonersaregay Well to be fair you cant prove you can speak here but you can type so congratulations on that at least!

  • @allgoonersaregay you ARE joking of course......

  • fast show=genius!

  • Shits on the kooks.

  • oh funny... singer looks like a bigger version of paul heaton...( ok i mean fat.. lol ) yeah, funny..

  • was this Paul Whitehouse's take on the whole 90's Brit pop movement? ie: music that was built up to sound hard and dangerous but in fact a lot of it sounded like meek 60's British pop.

  • It never occurred to me before, but this is like a Cockney long-haired version of Zane Lowe!!

  • looks like jamie oliver has hung up his appron and has got a new new job..........indie club

  • teenage fanclub

  • lol 'indie club' is no 'jazz club'

    Nice.

  • Colon are quite literally SHIT! Lol

  • I remember seeing colon two weeks before they broke up. The guitarist has actually formed a band with former 'blouse' frontman Purves Grundy.

  • the presenter reminds me of irish dj dave fanning, alot of waffle and hype..

  • Hah! I'd forgotten about Mr. Fanning....still when I was in ireland in 1988 he was the only way I got to hear the new Patti Smith album. He's not all bad.

  • my goodness..!

  • he's right,i've not herad anything like that before!...thank fuck!..

if any nme/meody maker readers had a brain cell,i'm sure it would have died of loneliness years ago!.

  • OASIS...

  • @warriorprince1010 no, thank fuck :D

  • I saw Colon at the Dublin Castle....I've been gazing at my shoes ever since

  • fucking brilliant.

all NME readers should be gassed.

  • @fifthera Hater gonna hate, lover gonna love.

  • @fifthera bit offensive... I am a faithful reader and, interestingly enough, i found this video when it was linked to me by an incredible band that the NME mentioned. Should i be gassed then? I am also jewish, so choose your words carefully.

  • @TheParanoidAndroid1 - i dont give a toss if you're jewish or from mars, its you making an issue of it.yawn.if you have no sense of humour thats your problem.the NME has ALWAYS BEEN by CUNTS for CUNTS -whiny wimpy-liberal-lefty students - are you soft left-wing & a student too,eh?!?!

the NME has always been anti- any band or genre i like, and pro a load of shoegazing wank.SOUNDS was a real music paper, are you old enough to have ever bought it?!?!?! & magazines like PENETRATION (ever heard of it?)

  • Comment removed

  • @TheParanoidAndroid1 "I am also jewish, so choose your words carefully [or the mossad will abduct and gas you like some palestinian gentile - he means, ha]."

  • @viteznemes Actually i was so dillusional for a second i thought you guys might actually have a shred of compassion and might want to avoid being offensive. Clearly not. Cunts.

  • @viteznemes - not only all NME readers but all Absolute Radio listeners should be gassed.there is no difference between a load of shit chart rap/r n b that gets repeated endleslly all day on Crapital etc and a load of whiny wanky students with jingly-jangly guitars."fuck the legal stations" (except BBC radio 3 and 4,the only ones that dont treat thier listeners as if they have the attention span of a goldfish)

  • @fifthera: I actually posted this on the NME Facebook wall. Only for them to remove it! haha!

  • @MusicalElitist1 hahahaaaa! well funny!

  • also kerrang readers too!!!!

  • @redbarchetta1984 - yes!!! "kerang" is vile, full of "nu-metal" (which is not even metal really is it,its just a bunch of wiggers who can't rap properly, with guitars)

  • @fifthera How does this have ANYTHING to do with the bands NME promote? lol

  • @fifthera But let's begin with the NME staff!

  • -11, idiot. Instantly proved wrong

  • "self-propelled"? what in the holy living fuck are you on about

theres also a major problem in someone from outside britain citing this as an example of british parody "sucking cock", in that everything this clip parodies is uniquely british. so how would you know.

  • there's "no joke" to you because you dont get it.

  • no, you still don't get it! like i don't get south park, or beavis and butthead, or family guy (I love curb your enthusiasm tho) and green wing,

tell u what, u keep yours, and we'll keep ours.

u probably don't get python either do you? fair play, but thank god im from where im from...

  • green wing is quite funny actually.

  • The lead singer bears a remarkable resemblance to Paul Heaton (Beautiful South & Housemartins)

  • Such a true representation of the procrastinating pussy britpop scene.

  • Pricks like Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley still talk bollocks like this. Every shite band is next big fucking thing. I fucking despise new music. So fuck Radio 1. Cunts.

  • Im guessing this was made in the 90s , and to be fair the music scene here in england the 90s was very tame. Oasis were considered to be rock and roll whilst people like blur and radiohead experimental , says it all really!!!!!

  • you are a first class numpty sir!

  • Some of the best music is from the 90's. I mean come on...NIRVANA!

  • lol, lots of great music from the 90's, suede, stone roses, nirvana, oasis, pulp, massive attack, super furry animals even! I love them all!

  • colone, what a class name for a band in the mid 90's hahahahaha

    simon rose is another

  • this was my favourite Fast Show sketch. Better than Jazz Club.

  • jesus mate its even better then jazz club!!!

  • Er, its comedy, fella's......

  • sounds incredibly like the pretentious crap and hype that surrounds most modern music

so many bands are said to be uncompromising or pushing new boundaries and so on..then proceed to play a 3 or occasionally 4 chord completely bland jingle

  • which is exactly why this is such a brilliant pisstake

  • Are you a moron? Its a comedy programme you clown!

  • no Im not a moron or a clown..you however have agression and manners issues..go fix em please.

  • It's like Zane Lowe unwittingly based his entire career on this skit. Brilliant.

  • "like i one hand grenade in a convent" lol

  • I REMEMBER THIS ONE,, I THINK ITS BRILL...oooh baby

  • Is it a good or bad thing that I like this song?

  • Good and bad.

  • Couldn't agree more. I'm only 20, but almost everything in the top 40 baffles me, how has it come to this.

  • i'm 16 and i agree..

  • good to hear that it's not just me getting old!

  • this is great - a parody or somesuch of fast shows' very own Jazz Club... the kid on main vox went on to be an occasional comedy actor on other shows...not sure if he's had his own beeb3 show yet.

  • i love this clip. it shows that a lot of english indie is fey, twee, limp wristed, jingly jangly crap!!

  • Because America's self-whining trash is so much more riveting,.

  • the american music that i like isnt self whining. big black sonic youth etc etc, i like a lot of 80's american noise rock and those band dont really deal in self pity.

  • A lot of "English Indie" (or do you mean British?) was influenced by the Velvet Underground; an American band I think. Of course, the VU had a wide range, from soft to hard, just like many Brit "indie" bands but you have to listen properly to appreciate that. Or you could just be a one-dimensional knuckle-dragging metal fan.

  • Aww, mr macho man has got all upset. The irony of you labeling anything that isn't loud noise as " fey, twee, limp wristed..." blah, blah, blah and then falling for the wind-up over metal is quite hilarious. And then you prove it is *you* that missed the point of a great sketch - the ridiculously gung-ho presenter who thinks he's introducing the new Slayer or something...

  • i never said "loud music good, quiet music bad" what i said was " music played with compassion and justifiably gaining exposure good, over hyped say nothing drivel made by talentless chancers who wont get beyond their debut album bad, in fact fuckin awful. the ridiculously gung ho presenter was an obvious piss take of yer typical nme/melody maker yoof presenter who is trying to sell to the public a band who, judging by their music, are not really what they are made out to be, a rock n roll riot.

  • Well, I don't remember you saying that at all but hey ho. Chancers and bandwagon jumpers? You'll find them everywhere. Dull, generic crap isn't limited to any musical (or literature or the visual arts) genre and when British "indie" became nothing more than a trend they were 10 a penny promoted by self-serving muso media scum. You write about "soft indie" NME pundits but a decade ago it would be grunge pundits or before that metal pundits and on...

  • of course there is chancers and bandwagon jumpers everywhere. but in the world of "indie" but there are a lot of crap out there thats promoted when it shouldnt be and it was the likes of NME/Melody Maker where the writers had a build em up knock em down approach to whatever was happening at the time. they lurched from one scene/trend to another. for example its cool for hipsters to listen to "stoner rock" a fad that had died 10 years ago within the metal scene is back again with the indie kids.

  • and if i was to listen to some soft indie as you call it i would probably go for maybe "the pastels" or even "orange juice" i would give all forms of music a fair crack of the whip.

  • do the world a favour. end it. now. black its all black. the world it but a endless relentless chain of devastating disapointments, mother never loved you. end it all now. save us from your non consequential dribble, that bores us to the bone. the world is all black.

  • wow a randomer on the internet typing incoherent gibberish. nothin new there

  • Black! Like the procession of night that leads us to the valley of despair! Aaah! I'm blind! The gulls have plucked out my eyes! ... Is that you in the buttons box, making all the noise? Or is it black?! Black! Blaaack!

  • durruti1939 and thrashmetal13, would be so kind as to curtail your high brow debate on the pitfalls of the music biz (or at least take it outside/elsewhere), given that this is a comedy skit parodying the exact poppycock the pair of you are exchanging.

    Please gentleman...

And BTW, metal13, is by the far the more annoying out of the two.

    Thank you.

  • its based on 90s indie though , stuff like oasis . travis , stereophonics, ocean colour scene . i think the indie scene in england has been pretty healthy last few years , alot more electroy and punky than jangly and soft

  • Sorry Jimmy but you are one sad strange individual, you must be some 25 year old Kings of Leon fan who jumped on the bandwagon 3 albums in.

  • Anyway, this video is a piss take of the presenters of these shows at the time, not the bands.

  • I never even metioned kings of leon cos i think they are shit. but phonics and oasis , jesus they just both lightweight nobody who seriously like music listens to em , they for chavs who buy 1 album a year. Plus i aint a cunt but your mom is and your dad is a peado!!!!!!! and he prob beats the shit out of you and messed about with ya when u was a kid.

yeah yeah yeah what u gonna do now , please dont scare me

  • you did not have to, seems as your givin it the biggun over good music i though is look at your page, right there it says you uploaded a kings of leon vid and to the trainied eye it also says your a big girl whith daddy issues.

  • you're an illiterate moron, this is a statement of fact.

  • hey, look everybody! its Scouting for Girls!

  • Give it a name brothers and sisters

  • lol zane lowe

  • God, you just have to wonder how some writers on the pretentious New Musical Express felt when they saw this.

This is a magazine where one writer described some pointless band's sound as like 'running through a forest naked...at midnight'.

    True!

Yet another spot on piss take by the The Fast Show.

  • What series is this on? Im fairly sure it's either series 1 or 2.

    Cheers for any help.

  • Still a scream after all these years. Everything you know is wrong!

  • i loved that show.. look at 1:20 he doesn't sing, hehe
