Interesting...my comment about fish that has the most thumbs up isn't a top comment anymore.
Last I checked 36>27 so maybe youtube programmers are getting cerative with their coding of comment evaulations so as to determine which comments are the most recently getting a large number of thumbs up so as to show the most recently active top comments. I'd like to see the coding for this kind of stuff as I imagine it would be facinating to see what decisions define what actions, and the variables.
I think that the men trying to spear the fish is an absurdist theme put in the movie. It is pointless and only results in destruction, yet they try and try again to grasp at it. I'm using absurdity in the sense that human beings constantly grasp for inherent meaning in life, yet fail to find such meaning. I also believe the girl is meant to represent the Virgin Mary. It seems a little obvious. This great duty of protecting the egg is given to this innocent girl, who likely fails to understand i
Hasn't it already been established that trying to 'catch' the fish-shadows isn't going to work? So WHY 6 minutes later are they STILL trying to 'catch' them?! lol
VERY IMPORTANT, I am currently collecting emails and messages to send to Criterion in an effort to get a release of this film. Everyone, please contact me as soon as possible to support this wonderous film. SIncerly, Angel's Egg Coalition.
Its no wonder it was a flop. I find it kind of interesting myself, but that doesn't change the fact that its 100% surreal and 0% coherent story. It takes a real special kind of appreciation to like a movie like this.
Cool this movie is kinda like Metropolis (just without the story and dialogue). Weird that a sound movie would actually have WAY LESS dialogue than a silent movie (-:
man doesn't drink water...and he looks like a soldier...he gains that girl's trust when the fish and the men come out...when the girl goes to the church, that colored winow's figure is one of those fishes (the had is down and the tail up).
Perfect example of why one should not read the comments on a segment of a surrealist film before watching said segment. :-P
Also: yay coelacanths! ^_^ I love those fish, thought to be extinct for 65 million years until they were discovered still living off the coast of Africa. To me they symbolize the hope that life can defy the limitations and expectations that you're taught.
i think the ppl chasing the fish shadows was supposed to be representing ppl who chase after things that arent achievable/possible/existent because they have nothing else to live for
This HAS to be the same animators that later did Berserk! I just can't see this without remembering Berserk--animators have their own fingerprint to an image!!
1:08 - in the puddle, the man looks like some kind of shadow or ghost that's following her everywhere for some sort of goal......oooooooo....... o_O creeepyyyy....... ooooooo
So this is what "WTF?" looks like when animated. @_@
All I could think of was that girl has a woman's voice. She looks pregnant. And she's now got a bodyguard she doesn't want. She's running away from things that aren't explained, and I have a surreal feeling I'm going to be having nightmares about this.
I SWEAR! ok i like this movie so far and its really amazing the music is.... undescribable its so awesume but really!! the guy first reminded me of a pedo NOW A STALKER PEDO!!! DX but but... i think the reast of the movie is winning me over... so... amazing @.@
Those men are like statues, dead until the fish show up, then they come to some semblance of life. Maybe it's like each chasing after his own interpretation of Christianity (fish) but forgetting it all stems from one God in plain sight?
When the girl stood by the window, under so many passing fish shadows...having seen other windows shattered by the spears, I was afraid she was in danger of getting skewered. Thought it was interesting that she seemed safe while the man looked on from outside.
such a beautiful and compellng movie so far, but could someone please elaborate on the symbolism I'm hearing about, with the fish and Christianity? Even after reading all the comments I'm not too sure or understand...
Ok so what's with the flying fish? Ok this is soweird, I swear I had a dream about the end of the world long time ago, I think I was around 14 or 15 and in my dream, the first thing that appeared in the sky before the chaos was a giant fish slowly flying in circles then about a week later I saw the premiere of the video "In the end" by Linkin Park and I saw a flying whale! lol so weird lol, it seems like flying fish are related to the end of the world lol and now this! lol..
I think that this is a post armmageddon and the fish represent the lack of food. Driven mad by hunger the men hunt day and night the 'ghosts' of fish.
I think the fish and the fishermen don't symbolize only the christians. the fishermen have the same clothes like soldiers in the second worldwar. The're hunting all vor shadows
wich are not real. I think its symbolisize the stupidy of war because of a shadow-picture
the wariors make of their opponents (the nationalsozialism made it of the judes and the christian church made it of non-christians)
If you know the background work the creator did on the fish part, the fish is alot more interesting then you first think it is. If you're familar with rare fish species you'll notice that the shadow of the fish at 2:40 is actually that of a Coelacanth, an extremely rare, deep water fish, which was thought to have been extinct until 1938. The size of a Coelacanth, although exagerated for the film, is quite large. They have been known to grow up to 2 metres long.
If you have this knowledge before watchiogn the film you recognize that Oshii is trying to give the impression of great lengths of time since the fish have appeared, such which have made the fish but ghosts in the present.
Isn't that fish also one of the possibly assumed species to have been the beginning of terrestrial beings? I heard it's only found in specified areas and that it's extremely hard to find!
Yes, it is very hard to find for two reasons. one, because there are few left, and two, because they live very deep when compared with other species. I'm not sure about the evolutionary theories related to it, so you very well may be correct. we kind of went off on a tangent but whatever...meh
I watched a program called animals in the womb, and apparently when we develop, humans and animals still look like the prehistoric fish i.e. spine, tail, eyes etc. This is supposed to prove that all life evolved from a common ancestor
@thenameispang on the contrary, you do have a life. I mean, you fill yourself with interesting facts by reading and doing research. Facts that can be useful. That's having a life. Trolling around the internet is having no life.
i think the fishermen represent christians ( as the creator apparently renounced his faith shortly before conceiving this piece); they hunt for what is not there, only a shadow; a mere representation of what they seek can they find.
you don't about the creepy man carrying the cross either. you're just saying that b/c he carries a steampunk cross. just b/c you see a random young guy carrying a cross doesn't strictly validate him as Jesus Christ or anyone who is a follower of Jesus.
well of course that's true, but we all know when a cross shows up in an Anime, its usually a reference to you-know-what . .. of course its ambiguous so there's always an element of mystery to it . .. but come on!
Come off is more like it in this case....Christianity is immediately recognized if you're raised in that state of reference in western civilization. You get the u-k-w...But the crosses in Anime is not usually the case...They don't all mean the same thing... Either they're referenced to Christianity or to Ancient Roman brutality or to Celtic culture etc..
.If this is a Christian reference then it's a poor one like all anime....this is what professional observers call a cultural gap or lack of reference.
well, I would believe you but I've been watching Anime for a while and I can make up my own mind about things . .. also, isn't art about perceiving it the way you see it and interpreting it that way, .. . I think that's a Christian or it might be "anti-Christian" . .. nonetheless, it alludes to the idea of a savior . .. If you don't wanna believe that, its fine!
If that's your honest perrogative....I'm totally fine with that. As far as the perception of art is concerned....yeah you can say that, but it doesn't always count for certain cases. Sometimes symbolic interpretations can faulty and lead to negative consequences, in other words...it might be used by as a tool from an unlikely group to promote their extreme ideology...in reality that might not be the artist's intent. Art isn't immune to consequences. Something to think about...take or leave
well, now we're getting into another discussion . .. its a never ending argument, but rest assured, there are no extreme ideologies that I'll be promoting for years to come (I can't really say "for as long as I live") . . . anyway, it was nice arguing with you . . . peace

@marinersfanfromny Aww, that's really sad. I mean, sure, the film seems to be a giant metaphor for something I have quite grasped yet, but it's still beautiful. For instance, all of the little personality nuances in the girl shows Oshii has a sense for the human element.
