To me this represents the spirtual journey that humanity is undertaking. We have created so much, many things that are good - for the future generations, but we have become lost in it. It could represent our yearning and our needs to become more spiritual and let go of many of the material things that distract us in our daily lives. We need to get back to nature, I think the shell and the natural sounds heard may be symbolic of that. Snakes are also extremely symbolic in many mythologies.
Snakes were very common in many creation myths - hopi, mayan, indigenous australians, chinese mythology, christians; all have stories of a snake 'giving' civilisation to humans, and of it's return in the end. Some cultures believe the sanke to be immortal, and messengers between worlds. Whatever the meaning, I believe the snake is very symbolic throughout the film. By the end, the man has come to the end of his journey and is at peace with himself and with death.
He walks calmly into the future, whether it be 'death' or the completion of his spiritual journey and is able to see all of the 'unseen' in the universe. All the science, learning, growing and searching has led him to this point and he is one with it all. Labyrinth's are symbolic for mother earth in some cultures, or spiritual journeys, even our destiny in others.
What is most fascinating about a labyrinth is ones ability to get so lost in it, letting go of the outside world and other distractions. It could be seen as a pilgrimage to a sacred person, or perhaps that sacred person is in us, and the labyrinth is symbolic of the journey within ourselves. To me this film represented a man looking for something, something very real, and not being able to find it in the outside 'real' world.
He had to journey inward and become more in touch with the earth to find the answers he was looking for. It was there that he found everything, and much much more. This is just what I interpreted many of the symboligies to be, I'm sure there are many and multiple meanings one could take from this intriguing film.
A-maze-ing. Ya, I said it.
