Did I miss a step? You said create an HTML home page but on your tutorial it's a PHP home page. Do I need to convert the HTML page to PHP? Also could you type the php coding you put on the top of the page in your description box. Can't tell if there are spaces or not. Noob...sorry.
@skillssaysitall I previously created a site in HTML and tried to use this method to attach a blog page. Just did not work and upset the settings of my site. I'm sure it's exactly because of what you noted. Let me know if you get an answer.
@skillssaysitall I understand that your question was posted long time ago. But in case other people are interested here are the answers:
Create an empty .php file and copy and paste your html code inside.
At the very top of your html code you should have the code from the video. Sorry, can't give you the code, because youtube does not allow to put the code into the comment.
@skillssaysitall Looks like he's using textpad (textpad (dot) com) as the editor ($27). There are may free editors and you can also use a basic notepad to make the edit. I'm assuming he simply copied the html from a blank page in the Wordpress theme and then did the edits from there...
Hi, thanks for this video, really helpful. The only issue I'm having is with the images, I did everything as you said, but the pictures in my page appear with a question mark instead of the image, I already uploaded the pictures to the images folder of my current theme. Any help?
if im creating a "results page" for an auto insurance site would I do the same thing you did in the demo? My site is wordpress as well. So im wondering do i create a page called "results"? ... I have a code to place within this file so all the auto insurance companies display once the zip code is submitted into a form by the visitor. not working with pasting this code into a regular wp page
If you are using a Google Analytics WP-Plugin, will the custom home page be tracked by Google Analytics automatically using this method. Or do we need to add the Google Analytics code manually to the custom home page?
How would you create a front page where it show a summary of the main blogger as well as the contributors? I don't think a static page is the answer to that.
So basically, the home page would have let's say 4 rows and each only shows a picture of blogger, and besides one would see their most recent blog.

How do I create a custom post page? Not a custom home page. What I want to do is have the header and footer included in the page but not the sidebar and I want the page layout to be 100% of the screen.
That's a great information thanks mlwebco. But could you do a tutorial on how to get maybe the most recent 3 or 4 posts - or most popular posts, to show up on the custom static homepage. I'm a WP noob. That would really seal the deal thanks.
Thank you for sharing! I 've followed ur video to try to upload a Home Page n set it as the main page of my website at wp admin, but all the graphics on the webpage cannot be displayed. I did upload all the images to the img folder under the same theme... Can u advise? Thks
@hanausa16 Check your html code, make sure the source of all your images are pointing to a location where the images are. My images are not in my root location in an images folder like this... can't post the code in this comments box... email me or send me a message via youtube and I'll post the code.
@mlwebco Hi I had the same problem as hanausa16 re missing images. I checked my code for image location and it all looks ok - please advise what I might be missing here - many thanks
Mike, Thanks for this. I was able to do this just fine, but the blog did not use the same CSS as the home_page. I have 2 questions:
1. After creating an initial index (homepage) and putting the work into the CSS for that, how do you get your WP Theme to match the index/homepage CSS?
2. How do you get your blog summary onto your home page?
Any direction or videos on this would be very helpful! Cheers!

Thanks! This was a great tutorial - I followed all your instructions and it works as promised, but the only issue that I'm having is that the images that are a part of my new custom home page aren't displayed. I added them to the images folder of the theme root directory where I uploaded the new home page, but they're not displayed. Any suggestions? They are relative image links used in my custom home page (ie. images/header.jpg)
When I do the static front and posts page, it doesn't work. I will have my home page, and I go to click blog, the only link it's like an enter site link, it just reloads the page.
@DMTV those links that you see (portfolio, services, blog, etc.) are just static links that aren't tied to the blog section. Think of a simple static website with those buttons linked to their respective page. Then I added the wordpress blog in a directory called "blog". Then I added my home page (or index page) to wordpress (shown in the video) which made it my default home page for the blog. It all sounds confusing, but it's pretty simple. :)
@mlwebco So I just watched your video and it was very helpful, I got the home page to show up like I want it to, but when I click on the posts page it doesn't look like my template. I cant figure out how to make my posts page not look like the default template. I noticed that your website on the tutorial has a custom background and buttons to it but it still shows your blog posts. If you could help me out with fixing this I would greatly appreciate it.
Great video, I do have a question though. Are you able to CMS areas of your homepage other than it being static content? Such as news feeds or feeds from your blog or even just some general content without having to do it manually?
@mlwebco thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure what version but I downloaded it i the last week or so, does that help?. I had a look around under 'attributes' but the only option i have is 'parent' and 'order' but no 'template' option. Could it be something to do with my code perhaps?.
@gilespittock Ah, I think I see what you mean. Looks like the "Target" label has been changed to "Parent". See if you can do the same thing just using the Parent dropdown.
Great tutorial, thank you. Having trouble creating a single-page site with my own design though... Followed your tut but my site is missing its own css even though ive placed it in the default folder... I thought creating your own theme from photoshop to dreamweaver to wordpress would be a lot more straightforward but I cant find a tutorial online thats thorough enough!!
@DLocked Your stylesheet doesn't have to be in the default folder. For my site mlwebco, I don't use the blog stylesheet in the default folder, my stylesheet is located int he root directory on my server and I just make sure I point to it within the header (php) page on the blog template. If you need help in more detail, you can email me at mlocke(at)mlwebco(dot)com.
H Michael - I've got everything working as laid out in the video - now what I'm hoping to do is make other pages editable through wordpress the way you describe. Created my "About" page for instance (a copy of the homepage html in the About.php page as a placeholder . However, it looks to me like my other pages aren't picking up the tables and images in order to display. Someting is getting through since the page is black - nothing else. Do I need to put my images etc somewhere new?
@VexationAudio you can place your images in any folder, it can be in the root directory of your website, or in the default themes folder. It's totally up to you and how you want to manage the site. I keep all my images in the root folder of my site, just make sure you point to the image correctly.
excellent info. now how did you make your blog pages look like your main website and control what content appears in certain sectors of the design. hope u understand what I am asking and reply :) nice vid
when I designed my site, I first design the blog and the site locally in a full working HTML prototype, making them consistent. Then I installed and edited the wordpress blog, my home page, and all the other pages about, services, portfolio, etc.
I had changed the home page to a static page and blog page to blog but that left me with the "pages" template for all pages inc the home page and the index.php for my blog.
What i could not get my head round was how to keep the home page static but use a different template.
Naming the template allowed the me to define exactly what template file to use for the home page.
Wordpress docs are usually very good but didn't do a great job explaining this one.
Great video. I have a question that I don't see in here, after I create the HTML for the homepage or any other page how do I assign certain sections of the homepage to editable through wordpress?
@TheMichaelcordova once you set up your home page template, you can use any Wordpress plugin on that page like you would with any wordpress blog site. For example, check out my video on adding "recent posts" to your home page:
Sorry, been on vacation, lost track of comments. Basically, you want to use wordpress as a CMS. You have to create a template for each page (just like I created the template for the Home Page in this video), then on each page, you have to add some wordpress code. But I can't post it here in the comments. Send me a personal message or email and I'll send you the details.
I plan on putting out another video on how to do what you're asking. Stay tuned.
I understand how to create a static home page, but i want in that page to show some frames with dynamic content like: recomanded or random posts from a category [let's say about 6 posts, only the short description with the thumbnail], recomanded videos frame, a text frame... etc. (you can also put some php code in there, i understand very well php but i'm new in wp architecture). Anticipated thks
Also, I think what you're looking for are Wordpress plugins. To accomplish what you want (those dynamic content areas) you just need to do a search for "Wordpress plug-ins" for specifically what you need. Once you make a page a template like in my video here, you can add any wordpress plug-in to it.
I have three blogs I am trying to this with and therw is no drop bown template feature on the pages in either of them. Do I just need to find another word press theme?
No, I don't think you need to use a different theme. I just think you may need to upgrade to one of the latest versions of wordpress. You should be able to upgrade without losing any customizations.
That portion is designed or mocked-up in Fireworks (i.e. Photoshop). But then, it's sliced and converted to HTML. So the end result is HTML/CSS. But I intially design it in Fireworks. Fireworks is the lighter version of what Photoshop is.
So I made an html template with a nice graphic header and blank body. However, when I try to add body content on a new WP page using my custom page template (within WP), it only renders my original outline content that was created with html. How can I add text & images to the body of this page using the WP editor?
Forgot to mention, some Wordpress templates already have the homepage.php as a template. All you do in that case is change the file name to something else. ;)

Thks
hanausa16 1 year ago
@hanausa16 Check your html code, make sure the source of all your images are pointing to a location where the images are. My images are not in my root location in an images folder like this... can't post the code in this comments box... email me or send me a message via youtube and I'll post the code.

@mlwebco did you use image html code for the images maybe that will work I did that and that seemed to work for me on the images.

Hi.
Greetings from denmark.
I have just started using wordpress and i am very interested in learning how to make these static sites with a custom design on it.
I know photoshop very well because i use it to photo editing.
Will you be able to make a video for me where you show:
1. How to make a custom front page in Photoshop and what to name the layers.
2. The entire process from after creating a design to converting it and uploading it to the site.

how did you identify and create links on homepage (i.e portfolio , blog ,.....)
DMTV 1 year ago
@DMTV those links that you see (portfolio, services, blog, etc.) are just static links that aren't tied to the blog section. Think of a simple static website with those buttons linked to their respective page. Then I added the wordpress blog in a directory called "blog". Then I added my home page (or index page) to wordpress (shown in the video) which made it my default home page for the blog. It all sounds confusing, but it's pretty simple. :)
mlwebco 1 year ago
@mlwebco hey thanks. for that , as a newbie to the whole design thing its very helpful to have such details instruction.
Also what is the name of the font you used when you made the Aquafish mock up on your video.
DMTV 1 year ago
@mlwebco So I just watched your video and it was very helpful, I got the home page to show up like I want it to, but when I click on the posts page it doesn't look like my template. I cant figure out how to make my posts page not look like the default template. I noticed that your website on the tutorial has a custom background and buttons to it but it still shows your blog posts. If you could help me out with fixing this I would greatly appreciate it.
squishy101 1 year ago
specifically at 5:42 you click to the blog page and it shows full posts but the same theme/background/buttons from before

Great video, I do have a question though. Are you able to CMS areas of your homepage other than it being static content? Such as news feeds or feeds from your blog or even just some general content without having to do it manually?

I don't seem to have the template option dropdown under attributes, any idea why this is?
gilespittock 1 year ago
@gilespittock It could be that you're on an older version, or newer version that changed the layout. What version of WP are you running?
mlwebco 1 year ago
@mlwebco thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure what version but I downloaded it i the last week or so, does that help?. I had a look around under 'attributes' but the only option i have is 'parent' and 'order' but no 'template' option. Could it be something to do with my code perhaps?.
gilespittock 1 year ago
@gilespittock Ah, I think I see what you mean. Looks like the "Target" label has been changed to "Parent". See if you can do the same thing just using the Parent dropdown.
mlwebco 1 year ago
@mlwebco I already tried that but it's nowhere to be found, very strange!.
gilespittock 1 year ago
@mlwebco I looked but there's definatley no option for a template to be uploaded. Do you think it could be something to do with the code perhaps?

Great tutorial, thank you. Having trouble creating a single-page site with my own design though... Followed your tut but my site is missing its own css even though ive placed it in the default folder... I thought creating your own theme from photoshop to dreamweaver to wordpress would be a lot more straightforward but I cant find a tutorial online thats thorough enough!!
DLocked 1 year ago

VexationAudio 1 year ago
@VexationAudio you can place your images in any folder, it can be in the root directory of your website, or in the default themes folder. It's totally up to you and how you want to manage the site. I keep all my images in the root folder of my site, just make sure you point to the image correctly.
mlwebco 1 year ago
excellent info. now how did you make your blog pages look like your main website and control what content appears in certain sectors of the design. hope u understand what I am asking and reply :) nice vid
wwwHOTLEATHERDREAMS 1 year ago
when I designed my site, I first design the blog and the site locally in a full working HTML prototype, making them consistent. Then I installed and edited the wordpress blog, my home page, and all the other pages about, services, portfolio, etc.
mlwebco 1 year ago
Hi thanks for the video,
I had changed the home page to a static page and blog page to blog but that left me with the "pages" template for all pages inc the home page and the index.php for my blog.
What i could not get my head round was how to keep the home page static but use a different template.
Naming the template allowed the me to define exactly what template file to use for the home page.
Wordpress docs are usually very good but didn't do a great job explaining this one.
Regards

Hey Mike,
Great video. I have a question that I don't see in here, after I create the HTML for the homepage or any other page how do I assign certain sections of the homepage to editable through wordpress?
TheMichaelcordova 1 year ago
@TheMichaelcordova once you set up your home page template, you can use any Wordpress plugin on that page like you would with any wordpress blog site. For example, check out my video on adding "recent posts" to your home page:

Yes, I edited the default wp theme with my own design.

Hi I want all pages static, no posts and my client who does not know html to be able update txt and pics on these pages- how do I do this?
emilpetroff 2 years ago
Sorry, been on vacation, lost track of comments. Basically, you want to use wordpress as a CMS. You have to create a template for each page (just like I created the template for the Home Page in this video), then on each page, you have to add some wordpress code. But I can't post it here in the comments. Send me a personal message or email and I'll send you the details.
I plan on putting out another video on how to do what you're asking. Stay tuned.
mlwebco 2 years ago
I understand how to create a static home page, but i want in that page to show some frames with dynamic content like: recomanded or random posts from a category [let's say about 6 posts, only the short description with the thumbnail], recomanded videos frame, a text frame... etc. (you can also put some php code in there, i understand very well php but i'm new in wp architecture). Anticipated thks

Check out my other video on how to add "Recent Posts" to the home page and let me know if this helps?
/watch?v=2N4-WvgFFwo
mlwebco 2 years ago
Also, I think what you're looking for are Wordpress plugins. To accomplish what you want (those dynamic content areas) you just need to do a search for "Wordpress plug-ins" for specifically what you need. Once you make a page a template like in my video here, you can add any wordpress plug-in to it.

I have three blogs I am trying to this with and therw is no drop bown template feature on the pages in either of them. Do I just need to find another word press theme?
KayComet 2 years ago
No, I don't think you need to use a different theme. I just think you may need to upgrade to one of the latest versions of wordpress. You should be able to upgrade without losing any customizations.

Great Video!
But underneath where the sections (Welcome, Things, Work) are do you do that in Phototshop or is that in the Html?
Ive never really understood that?
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!
djmixmind 2 years ago
That portion is designed or mocked-up in Fireworks (i.e. Photoshop). But then, it's sliced and converted to HTML. So the end result is HTML/CSS. But I intially design it in Fireworks. Fireworks is the lighter version of what Photoshop is.

So I made an html template with a nice graphic header and blank body. However, when I try to add body content on a new WP page using my custom page template (within WP), it only renders my original outline content that was created with html. How can I add text & images to the body of this page using the WP editor?
daneodoms 2 years ago
Yeah, you have to add a litle code to the template. But i can't paste the code in this comment box. Just email me and I'll send you the code to add.

Forgot to mention, some Wordpress templates already have the homepage.php as a template. All you do in that case is change the file name to something else. ;)
