When George Mason made the Final Four, the tournament committee deliberately slashed the number of mid-major at larges year by year until there. George Mason in 2006 there were 8. 2007, 2008 had 6. 2009 had just FOUR. 2010 went back up to 8. After Butler made the NCG, they expanded the tournament to 68 teams. Do you know how many mid-major at-large bids they divvied out? TWO!! One of them made the Final 4.

Not to mention, George Mason wasn't known for basketball.. it was just a big Northern Virginia Public University... somehow they had the combination of players and passion to make it to the final four.
