Im italian and I live in the bronx so my parents have an italian/bronx accent but ur teaching a freaken thick accent that nobody even talks with ........pretty retarted (no offence)
It's funny I'm the only dude from Pittsburgh who sounds like he's from NY. The ironic thing is I was never born there or raised there for a short amount of time. I have relatives who moved to NY after they come from Italy. I've listened to my dad and when he speaks with or words or o words or words that have a or sound in them or a short o sound to them he sounds like hes from NY too but came over from Italy when he was 9. Since my aunt and dad are Italians and they have no Italian accent.
I have heard both Bostanians, and New Yorkers talk like this. They're similar. Take Texas, and S.C. both sound southern, but are also a little different. I have heard the word Boston said like this in both areas: Bawston, and Bahston, the first "Boston" sounding longer, and more drawn out. To me that is the New York accent. The second "Boston" sounding more shorter, and not so drawn out. To me, that is a Boston accent. Again, my opinion.
I think New York City, and New York state, is what people get confused with. I have heard many people from New York City, such as Brooklyn, or Queens, talk like this, WITH HEAVY ACCENTS. Oh yeah, those same people, were also rude. Then again, I am from the South, and supposedly we're all "'bout dem manners, and hospitaaaaalitay!" Ha ha. Just my opinion...
"While They Say BeDduh" , "We Say Better" . Im From Nyc , And shes making it seem as if People From New York Are Some Aliens Who Dont Know How To Talk . Smdh .
This woman is full of crap - she has little idea as to what she'd talking about, and is she is a NYC native something is wrong, I'd say there is NO way she is.
Uhh..I was born and raised here in NY. Still living here. And I say "better" how she says it when she is referring to "we." I do NOT say it(and don't know anyone else who also says it) like.."behdda" like a Family mob boss..
I am speaking to you from the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street.
This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that, unless we hear from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.
I'm from New York and this accent definitely DOES exist, but I believe it is mostly spoken by Caucasians living in CERTAIN areas of New York. For those people, she is not exaggerating AT ALL. It is that thick. The younger generation of New Yorkers don't really adopt this thick of an accent. If you're from the Bronx or maybe even Manhattan, you may not know what she is talking about at all. But if you've talked to some people in Queens or Brooklyn, it's there.
She's only exaggerating the sounds that non natives of New York hear. Of course yous guys in New York don't talk like that because it's much quicker and clipped. New Yorkers do not sound that crazy. So chill out already.
The video is for actors, and actors also often portray a stereotypical image in order to connect with the audience better. The accent may not be that sharp in real life, but that wasn't important to the making of this video.
To the two most thumbs up. Get used to it. I live in the country and everyone thinks we have low IQs and speak with this heavy country accent. She has to overemphasize to help understand the accent. It is just an accent....nothing more...nothing less....It derives from that area hence why it is called a New York Dialect. Anyone with a good mind knows just because you live there doesn't mean you have the accent. The only thing that is making you look "retarded" is the fact you assume.
Love all the haters on here. Some of you really don't realize that you guys actually sound like this. Sure she is exaggerating a lot, but that's because she's trying to teach, which has to include example. I'm in a voice and diction class where we're learning the exact same way. One you know how to form the words with the ccent and speak them quickly, the overexaggeration disappears.
I don't know anything about any accent at all except my own, but I believe every word you said. Seems very logical to me. I want to learn the accent and I will be following her instructions. Your possitive comment is very uplifting and MAKES me want to learn. Thank You.
Goddam, lay off, folks, this is for actors. Actors doing an accent often do the stereotype of the accent. I've lived in Minnesota my whole life, and I don't talk like the guys in Fargo. Most people don't. Onstage, you're doing a caricature of it.
That's not what is happening - they are saying "beddah" - so they are not pronouncing the "r" at the end and the schwa sound becomes an "ah" - who is this chick and what makes her think she knows what she is talking about?
You New Yorkers who keep saying she doesn't sound like us just stop--STOP! The fact that you are from New York--some all your lives, doesn't make you the best qualified to make this judgement simply because you've heard it all your life and it sounds normal to you. Ask someone from southern California--Los Angles and I'll tell you this does sound like New Yorkers. Yes, it is over emphasized to make a point for people like me who live in California who don't hear this accent at all.
Unless she means someplace upstate New York, she does not sound like someone from New York. If she is talking about New York City, there are 4 distinctive accents within NYC: 1) Manhattan 2) Jewish American 3) Irish American 4) Italian American. The Italian & Jewish American accents are the most distinctive. Jewish being very nasally and whiny. Italian being very strong, very thick, impossible to lose or fake. She doesn't sound like any NY accent I ever heard.
Nobody talks like that any more. But I do remember older people that spoke like that. The accent has softened. As the city went from being an Eastern European, Italian, and Irish city to a Latino and African American City the accent has evolved greatly since 195. This video is teaching the viewers New York circa 1945.I am sure there are 80 year old New Yorkers who still speak like that but that is most certainly not the accent of anyone born on that year or after.
She is so far off...I'm from Long Island and I don't sound anything like any of her videos. Not "bedda"...that would be Sicilian for beautiful haha. "Better" sounds more like "beddur."
its ironic you said that in this context because few sicilians in sicily who aren't 50 years + speak like that (tho I wish they still did! bedda magra!)
For the life of me, I don't know why anyone would want to have a New York accent. I've tried to rid myself of it for years. Although mine has a slight "Joizee" twang, it's not a difficult task to master. Just picture Warner Brothers' Bugs Bunny...his dialect is 1/2 Brooklynese and 1/2 Da Bronx. Voila!
I have lived in New York my entire life and there are those who sound like this. But most people don't have that heavy of an accent. She has to overemphasize so that someone completely unfamiliar with the New York dialect can hear what makes it distinct.
@JayMac3180 Yeah...she actually gets me angry with how abysmally wrong she gets every accent she 'teaches'. I find myself mocking her and ranting back at the computer....hmm...not healthy
damn she make us new yorkas or should i say new yAWkas sound like shyt....i dont sound like dat im n miami riigh now an they say i have a brooklyn accent...i sound normal ta me
She makes everyone from NY look like total douche bags. I definitely don't freak out every time I say the word "better". I sort of say "bedda" but I don't say "BEDDEEEHHHHHSHSHZZZ!!!"
she wants to be a new yorker so bad, so let me heat a stainless steel yankees bat over an open flame and ram it dry right up her butthole twisting and turning it in and out. then put it in her mouth and make her suck the peanut butta off of it. Now I feel beDDa..
Some people in New York do sound like this... All of you need to STFU... Because half of you are not even born in New York (thats if you even live there)... Suck a cock.
You are an asshole. You are not an expert, you have never even been to New York. I live in Brooklyn. I do not speak like that. That is such a stereotype. What the hell is that. its not aw, its er. We don't say "bedda", we say better-with a slight d. You are a fu*!@#$ asshole
zzzzzzzz..... you need to give more examples to make it more interesting. Bring in actors to demonstrate that do not sound like Bella Abzugh every time.

You are an asshole. You are not an expert, you have never even been to New York. I live in Brooklyn. I do not speak like that. That is such a stereotype. What the hell is that. its not aw, its er. We don't say "bedda", we say better-with a slight d. You are a fu*!@#$ asshole

Totally inaccurate. Who is THEY? New Yorkers use R's instead of D's in double T conversations. As I said before, SHARRRRRAP.
