I've heard about this man for a while now and haven't heard him speak. I'm very excited for this. Just packed a healthy sized bowl and sprinkled some kief on top. Now time to blast off and let Carl Sagan's wisdom blow me away...
Dont get me wrong i love Carl Sagan and his work but i cant help noticing that sometimes he sounds like a robot, especially when he says galaxys or years. Its really offputting!!
It saddens me terribly that even in our day and age more people would rather cling to the notion that we are born wretched, sinful, and yet so self-important as to be the center of all things in a universe and world only 6,000 years old...
Rather than embrace the full immensity and infinitely more awe-inspiring, TRULY humbling beauty and majesty that IS the universe in proper...and that IS Carl Sagan's Cosmos!
I seen this series for the first time last year. How I wish I had seen this when I was younger, my life would have taken a very different path. Carl Sagan is an astounding teacher, a fantastic communicator. An inspiration. I am currently watching the series again with my eleven year old daughter, who is enjoying it greatly. Carl is poetic in his manner and with extreme clarity. I am moved by his love of "starstuff" and his continued faith in humanity. Lets get this into our schools ...
Carl has a way of appreciating the universe, the way he describes things puts it all in perspective. I get emotional watching and listening to this series.
Carl Sagan made Star Trek real. His series combined all the historical and visual data available at that time to inspire new generations of scientists to seek out new life and new civilizations. My favorite sequence is the evolution of life on Earth. Many people claim that God and evolution cannot exist side by side. I believe that God uses evolution to create the universe the same way that a baker uses dough to make bread. It is a process explained to sheep herders in a way they could grasp.
It saddens me that people know who a short, fat, horribly tanned, gawdy dressed, trashy, alcoholic girl from New Jersey on the TV is and not Carl Sagan.
It's so sad the tapes (or whatever medium it was recorded on) weren't better preserved. Even the episodes you can buy on places like iTunes are quite distorted and very low-res.
I'm so happy that I have discovered this series of videos. I'm 60 years old now, so I can remember back in 1980 when Carl Sagan's COSMOS first came out on PBS. I have even got the book by Carl Sagan. It is my Bible! An astronomical observatory is my temple, and Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Albert Einstein, Madam Curie, Maxwell, Michael Faraday, Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, Galileo, and Copernicus are my patron saints! No, I don't worship them because they're only human, but I do admire them.
@OwenIVx Oh! I did forget to mention Stephen Hawkins, and let's not forget Richard Dawkins, and I'm sure there is more I can think of, but it's late in the night right now, and I'm tired.
Carl Sagan above and beyond everything else, has got to be the greatest teacher who ever lived. He most certainly had the largest classroom with the most students in it, What's makes this even more amazing is that even after he passed away, there are still new students enrolling in his class and his teachings still generate a lot of lively debate.
@ThyrmBloodaxe probably not since cloning really only does physical characteristics. But we could map out his entire life again. Like the Truman show. I think, worth it!
What an excellent and inspiring speaker. Carl Sagan is the voice of the universe and all that is noble and logical. I could not express my gratitude enough for his efforts to bring interest to finding truth. Thank you, Carl Sagan; nobody could have said it better.
@RdMrcr That actually exists! :D Look up the "Carl Sagan for Rednecks" clip from Family Guy on Youtube. (Though I can only assume you already know about it, since your comment hit it dead on. :P)
"We've complete the spacecraft recognizance of the Solar System, the preliminary mapping of the visible universe that surrounds us, and we've charted the universe within: the human genome."

it saddens me deeply that only 50,000 people have seen this. It saddens me further that most would not understand the value and power of Carl Sagan's message
@frenchym55 Very few people watch these kinds of show on Youtube, this is the first time I've ever watched a pop science documentary on Youtube. This is also the first time I've watched a whole episode of Cosmos. There's tons of other similar shows that I have watched, and many others have. My point being, lots of people actually watch these shows, and maybe you shouldn't feel so saddened about it. I wonder how BBC gets the money for all those documentaries if nobody watch them.
How beautiful and magnificence our planet looks from space!!! I used to watch these videos on tv in my country... I remember feeling frustrated because I couldn't understand what Carl was saying!! lol
@Evilmike42 Read the wiki page about the series. Chapter five is music. P.S: searching for things on google gets much faster results than asking on youtube.
Maybe because its from so long ago, but I'm 15 minutes in and haven't really learned anything. I'm going to keep watching, just because Carl Sagan is supposed to be a genius and the subject is interesting but..
The first words are like the noise of thunder! He hit the nail on the head! My Father is all that there is... ever was, or ever will be!!! The cosmos itself!!!
@SpoonHysteria Well even laying the multidimensional theory by side, time stands still within a black hole, of wich we have plenty. So you could say he is wrong couldn't you?
@neverXuploadXvideos A black hole is supposedly a hole in the 4 dimensional fabric of space time, so rather than time standing still, I don't think time exists at all in a black hole.
@NANDO218 Time most definitely exists. Einstein's theory of special relativity pretty much proves this in all of its current day, real world applications; such as its use in global positioning triangulation.
@Puff29646 This universe is 4 dimensional and the same law of physics are in fact the same throughout. However, assuming there are universes outside of our own, then yes, it is possible that they have different laws of physics. But even then, the laws of physics for each universe would most likely be dictated by rules governed by a uniform law of physics in the higher dimensions.
@bullfrogeth Oh God! "Other universes"? LMAO!!! See what I mean about comprehension. It's like trying to explain another dimension to the inhabitants of "flat land"! lmao!!! Anyway, Other universes? Anything that is beyond this universe is simply another part of the universe. All is one and all is one!!! Furthermore, as I tried to state before when I speak of space time being multidimensional is that there are different plains and states of existence. I am NOT talking about spacial dimension.
@Puff29646 If anything that is beyond our universe is just another part of this universe, then what would you call our universe in particular? Other plains ARE spacial dimensions, however, we cannot perceive them because we only exist as 3d creatures. They exist perpendicular from any dimension which we can comprehend. Other realms may intersect our universe or be completely separate, depending on where they exist in M-space. Look up membrane theory, I'm sure you will find it very interesting.
@SpoonHysteria Why am I so sure? Because I comprehend. lol Really I cant tell you. There are to many prerequisites. Oh, there is ONE other person that not only can but WILL state it. Might even prove it to yah! lol Don't presume anything.
For some reason, the last 8 minutes are cut. Other than that, thank you for posting these! I love Sagan's Cosmos more than most of today's programming. It reminds me how beautiful existence is.
I remember watching him when I was a young boy and was thrilled as he told the story of the knowledge we have gained about space and time. His voice is so comforting and holds your attention. What a great teacher. What a great man. I wish he was still with us. If he were I'm sure we would have several cities on the moon, a Mars colony, and even space tourism. We might even have a space ark with thosands of people traveling to our closest neighboring solar system. He makes you dream great things!
7 thousand views of Cosmos by Sagan. 7 million views of some pop star getting arrested for any random reason. That is why there are no new Sagans to inspire us. Rest easy, Dr. Sagan - we will forever be in your debt. I hope you found a new galaxy to discover in the great beyond.
Can someone give me some link to purchase an italian version of this beautiful pearl? I have relatives that can't handle subtitles. I am SURE there must be someone who did the voice of Sagan for this series. Please help me answering this comment with a link. Because i can't find it
COSMOS is an unequaled masterpiece, Carl does such an excellent job in communicating in a minimum if precise words such deep profound wonder and awe, words of a poet, or even a prophet.
I couldn't imagine a more fitting epitaph through which to remember dear Carl.
@trespire how can one say this cosmos is all there is or ever will be without knowing how we came about to here? why presume mate when you dont know whats created this possibility of now or whats even supporting thy breath?
@estoboy29 I'm sure there are quite a few people who can explain to you the general understanding of how this universe came to be, as well as how humans breathe :)
@SpoonHysteria so you contain more then an one I? like an ego and such? materialistic sight is illusory for the eyeballs that seem like two are one and the same receptors. Success of what and to whom?
I really hope they can keep there up here for free. I purchased them myself just because I felt Carl Sagan deserved to be shown support, even so many years after these were produced. However I feel that Carl would rather have the message spread than the royalties made.
It was inspirational television like this that got me into science and engineering. Without it, the world would be a far poorer for me.
@kford123 good job now u donated money to some fat motherfucker who doesn't have anything to do with Sagan. U made the rich fuck richer. U can't help Sagan paying other people who don't deserve it.
@kford123 how can one say this cosmos is all there is or ever will be without knowing how we came about to here? why presume mate when you dont know whats created this possibility of now or whats even supporting thy breath?
@SpoonHysteria I would have loved to purchased the DVD's but they are not available in my region format.region5-Indiaan subcontinent.

Things have changed an awful lot. But there is still a lot that is awful.
The 'cold war show' never really ended. They simply changed the cast and moved the show to warmer climes so it wasn't so 'cold'.
Most of those nukes are still out there, pointing at...just about all of us.
And many scientists still whore themselves out to weapons makers.
But while we have among us visionaries like Sagan, even if only in spirit if not in flesh, there is hope.

@SpoonHysteria thanks for your blank presumption, at least you attempted*but please be real* ,cheers!
estoboy29 7 months ago
@estoboy29 An attempt that left you without a coherent rebuttal is a success in my eyes ;)

@SpoonHysteria so you contain more then an one I? like an ego and such? materialistic sight is illusory for the eyeballs that seem like two are one and the same receptors. Success of what and to whom?

@SpoonHysteria Agreed.

U can't help Sagan paying other people who don't deserve it.

shocked how little people have watched this

@millrice Unfortunately it's not that shocking to me, I think most people would rather watch 'Epic Meal Time' then actually learn something.
