This music is so pure it seems to tune everything out of my mind. Next time your driving and someone cuts you off and you feel like giving them the finger, just put this music on. I feel the world would become a better place.
I don't know who Peador O'Donnell is, he's probably dead since this song is a tribute... but damn. This guy is a musical force of nature! I hope Mr. O'Donnell appreciates the years of practice and the talent it takes to make that kind of music.
Peador O'Donnell was an Irishman who fought in the Irish War of Independence, and in the Spanish Civil War against fascists. The song was written in his memory.
This same concert Allison Krauss introduces him as "the finest dobro player the world has ever known". Man is it hard to disagree. I find myself not breathing during the last few bars as he just builds steam. Incredible
I've heard more than one musician who I have great respect for proclaim Jerry Douglas as the finest instrumentalist, period. Regardless of instrument.
I certainly can't argue against that! (Song co-written by Donal Lunny.)
This song is amazing. I listened to this album for about a year befor I realized this song was really a solo. It's so good and there's so much going on, I had no clue. Jerry Douglas, Cheers.
It is like a D tuning on the banjo but with dobro you have the extra 6th strind so you lower the 2nd 3rd 5th and 6th down from standard G tuning so its 1st stays the same D, 2nd lowers to A , 3rd lowers to F sharp, 4th stays the same, 5th lowers to F and 6th tune down to a VERY low D
People get too caught up in labels. Is bluegrass country? Is the stuff played on country radio these days country or country flavored pop? Was The Waybacks playing Zepplin at Merlfest 08 bluegrass? Who gives a shit, good music is good music, no matter what you call it. Music that sucks sucks, no matter what you call it. I've never seen Jerry Douglas play anything that sucked and that's why I listen to anything he plays. It's just that simple. Too many good musicians get lost in the label game.
... No, it's country, quite. Alison Krauss is... country, a hit artist in that genre so if you want to consider Union Station something else, you'd be more or less wrong, and Jerry Douglas is Jerry Douglas, this piece is far more advanced than standard Bluegrass, son.
Um... no. Bluegrass Jevo. This is not country. Country is actually derived from bluegrass and later, with Hank Williams, Blues. Bluegrass focuses on the backbeat a lot more than country. And you can find many interviews with Alison Krauss talking about her BLUEGRASS music. Get educated, son.
Eh, say what you like. Country music is much older than bluegrass, evident with the fact that Bill Monroe (labled as the Father, I'm sure you know) didn't define the genre until the thirties, and most people outside of the bluegrass circuit still see him as a grand ol' opry COUNTRY star. Many country superstars actually predated mainstream bluegrass, so...
Well, technically, bluegrass developed from the music of the Scots and Irish that came to America and settled in Appalachia, so it's roots go back much farther than that of country. But who really cares what came first. Irish, Scottish, bluegrass, country...it's all good music.
he does too. type in Wheel Hoss Ricky Skaggs you'll see. and I've known Jerry for over twenty years. he played with the whites back when they were country. so don't sit there and tell me he doesn't play country because i know for a FACT that he does homey...and my name is BigBoiJC..NOT FAG. if you expect to have a conversation with me...then be respectful and DO NOT call me names. i am a person. thank you.
Peadar O'Donnell was a writer, born in Donegal, Ireland. This piece of music is a wonderful tribute to the man - melancholy, beautiful, gentle and breath-taking. Take a bow Jerry. Peadar would be proud.
O'Donnell wasn't just a writer. He was a Marxist, a political activist, both by ballot and by the gun, revolutionary and anti-fascist. One of the greatest socialists Ireland has ever known.
On a somewhat related note, what a fucking dong someone like "taylormauck" is. In his 40's, and still a homophobic fucking whelp. Do these morons not tire of being the embarrassment of society?
