In this clip, she had already just sung the whole first act as the evil Venus! It's almost unheard of, except for some performances by Nilsson. Jones is pure innocence as Elisabeth, pure evil as Venus. A great artist. On a poor night, she was still exciting. On a good night, she could blow the roof off the theater.
Geez, its a giant turntable--Chereau infecting things again. By this time Gwynneth was a firm Chereau accolyte when she should have been giving at Wagner's artistic throne alone. Can't we have a forest like WAgner wrote it--oh that would be too difficult?
Such an intelligent artist. Her early performances were wonderful. Her Desdemona for Barbirolli was superb. Then she had a period when things didn't go so well - the wobble got worse and her attack was off. But then, gloriously, she had a great late career with Turandot and others. Huge, huge tone. It could carry over everything. Also a most charming lady, whose love for music shines through in all she does.
I always loved her, no matter the lisp and wobble (later). I remember her Senta in Berlin, when the audience applauded for 3 minutes after act 2, even though there was no intermission! Some of her performances, even in the 90's were simply breathtaking.
i don't know how many times i've watched this now, and every time i am surprised at the size of her voice after the orchestra prelude. yes it's bayreuth but damn that's a big voice.
I envy all who were fortunate enough to hear Jones in a live performance in her matchless prime. There simply is no other soprano like her.

Gran Cantante, como, Gran Artista; Su capacidad le permitia abordar infinidad
de roles, los cuales los revestia de una autentica veracidad. Una Artista para
no olvidar, y siempre, para tener muy en cuenta.

God bless her. She looks nuts but who cares. Her singing is so real and simple. It just happens to be huge. Inspiring.

I love the size of her voice and and the way she anchors it into her torso.
Grand voices like these are so rare.

Oh, with this exact performance on Greek TV in 1993 (with insane subtitles!) I first fell in love with Wagner! Thank you!
